We love the Cayman Islands. Our most recent visit was July 2 to July 9. We have been visiting some of the lesser known islands such as St. Lucia and Grenada ( We reviewed Spice Island Resort on this site also). We have also been to Bermuda many times and the Virgin Islands. Of course, if you love the Carribean as we do, each vacation and each island provides its own beauty, people, and memories. However Cayman will always be one of our favorites for a myriad of reasons.
First and foremost, the Cayman people are wonderful. They are the friendly and kind. The island itself, while not as physically beautiful as others, is still ablaze in the flora and fauna of the Carribean. If you like animals and fish, this is an exciting island. Turtles, iguanas, sting rays, birds, and fish, fish and more fish! We also enjoy the many fine restaurants. Renting a car allows so much freedom and choice of dining. Of course, it is expensive. Expect to pay 80 to 150 dollars per couple for dinner. Many fine supermarkets allow for puchase of drinks, snacks and light breakfast or lunch. Good way to save for those expensive dinners. Of course, there are many less expensive places to eat especially if you have children. When we were still taveling with ours, we ate many a meal at "Eats" which is directly across the street form the Westin. Our favorite adult dining on this last trip was probably Calypso Grill. We also greatly enjoyed the restaurant at the Hyatt for both dinner and lunch. The Reef Grill was also quite good. The Fish buffet at the Hyatt was outstanding. I "ate eight" lobster tails. We a;so ate twice at Regazzi's, an Italian restaurant directly in front of the Hyatt.
It must be said that most of the islands have some nice restaurants. They all have that wonderful Carribean warmth, but only Cayman has 7 Mile Beach. If you have not seen it, it is as beautiful as all descriptions you have read. I love to run on it, swim in it, snorkel in it, kayak in it and simply look at it especially during sunset. If you are avid snorkelors as my wife and I are, feel free to E-mail me as we were all over the island. I can give you detailed info about entry difficulty etc.
And now for our opinion of the Hyatt. Sorry you had to read so much if this is the only reason for reading this review. We will be going back to Cayman, and when we do, it will be to the Hyatt. We went over to the Westin and were graciously shown their rooms. We both agreed that we had made the best choice, and the Hyatt is actually somewhat less expensive than the Westin. We stayed on the more quiet less crowded, less expensive non-beach side, and that is where we will stay again. Beachside is very crowded and noisy. Walk to the beach the from the other side is short and beautifully landscaped. It presents no problem for able bodied people. We particularly enjoyed the large bathrooms and the cute "Romeo and Juliet" balconies. The pool and afternoon entertainment at the quiet side are also quite nice.
The Hyatt and Cayman are truly Grand together.
Please feel free to E-mail me. Our next stop is St. John in August.
