Grand Cayman Beach Suites

We stayed at the Beach Suites for 5 nights in mid-February during school break. I was concerned given that I had reserved the hotel prior to Hyatt change - but that concern turned out to be unfounded. The hotel was full or close to full but given that there are only 55 or so rooms it is not that busy. We had a suite facing the sea on the Fourth Floor with a walk-out balcony which is key and should be requested. My wife and I brought our 3 kids with us and had a great time. The suite is big enough for 5 with the adults having the separate bedroom and the kids sleeping on the pull-out couch and cot bed. The staff was very friendly and helpful and willing to recommend great restaurants off site and provide assistance even though the sushi selection and quality was great at Bamboo and the Hemmingway's menu was excellent. We had great food at every restaurant we went to on the island. The rooms were cleaned well and recleaned at turn down - a necessity with 3 sand-ladened children. The pool was great for younger kids (10 and under were mine) and the beach was beautiful. I would stake out the north side of the property given that the Red Sail waverunners and boats depart from the south side of the property - stay as far away as you can.
The only negative we would note is that the bar/restaurant across the street, Decker's - which has good seafood, has live music on thurs-sat. nights so it is noisy on the street side until 11:30 or 12. If this is your concern I would request an interior suite. To eat I would suggest the Lobster Pot toward Georgetown. Great local seafood. Further, if you are going to do any exploring at all I would rent a car. There is free parking in the hotel lot and we were able to get a spot every night.

Caveat: If you are looking for an economical holiday, given the weak dollar, the Cayman Islands is not the place for you. Dinner out for 2 adults and 3 kids with some ETOH ran between $250-350.

Just returned from the Caymans. What a great trip!
The island is the friendliest Island We've been to. The hotel was amazing. The rooms were spacious and clean, and quiet. The views were spectacular. Hemmingways rest. , the food was excellent. The shops were well stocked with everything you could need and more. The Beach was the best. I took some amazing sunset pictures. Can't wait to return. B. Fraser N.Y.

We stayed at the Grand Cayman beach suites in Mid Feb. Had a wonderful time. We took our kids, 6 and 2 they also had a great time. Even though its no long a Hyatt the staff is great and extremely helpful. The concierge was extremely nice and arranged all of our activities for us including a day trip with Red Sail Sports to Stingray city, which i recommend to anyone who visits the island. The Rooms are all suites, very nicely decorated with a very comfortable bed. We had room service every day for breakfast it was great and arrived in 20-30 mins. The Resort is right on the beach great views form our suite. Even though the hotel was 100% occupied it did not feel that way, there were plenty of avalible chairs on the beach and by the pool. The Pool is a bit small but it was perfect for us. The kids loved the swim up bar.
The food at Hemingways was great i recommend that you make reservations to ensure a nice table with views of the water.
Parking is limited at the hotel if you rent a car, but there is ample
parking across the street. This was our first visit we plan to go back soon

“A Bit Misleading”

Grand Cayman Beach Suites

Jan 30, 2008
14/16 found this review helpful

We just got back from a 4 Night stay at the Grand Cayman Beach Suites.

Firstly, this Hotel is no longer Hyatt!! Apparently on the Jan 1 2008, it switched to new ownership.

On the plus side,

1. We were given one of the best rooms in the 53 room hotel. We had a full balcony on the top floor facing the ocean. The room (suite) was the best part of this hotel. It was clean and well appointed. The batroom was very nice with marble tiles, etc. Since this is a suite the way the have it set up, the actual bedroom does not face the ocean, just the living area. This setup is not the best I have seen. I suspect all the rooms are setup with the bedroom facing the street.

2. The room had a handy kitchenette.

3. The sand and water at the beach was beautiful.

4. Some staff was very helpful, others not so much. It depended on the person.

There were some negative surprises.

1. The beach is very very narrow. We were there and the hotel was very empty, but the beach still felt crowded. High tide is worse.

2. To make matters worse, the hotel rents some space to Red Sail Sports. So that at least half the beach is used by them and large boats, Jet Ski's, etc. are coming in and out all day. Definitely wake up early and get a spot as far away from them as you can.

3. Apparently the space adjacent to the hotel is used by Carnival Cruise lines to bring cruise passengers to the beach when the ships are docked. We were enjoying a nice day on Thursday, when all of a sudden we were like "Where are all these people coming from". The passengers actually overflowed and set up on the hotels chairs and used facilities. I can't believe the hotel allows this kind of thing. They must know when these ships are coming. Anyway, we were not really happy as these cruise ship passengers were fairly loud and rude and basically spoiled a relaxing day.

4. This hotel used to be part of a larger complex that was destroyed when Ivan hit a couple of years ago. So that the hotel has no actual "lobby" or other resort like things. It is basically the hotel room or the beach.

5. The pool area is nice, but it is shady most of the day.

6. The main restaurant Hemmingway’s is ridiculously expensive. The food was ok, but not worth the price. A note is that the entire island is way overpriced for all the basic things, so Hemmingway's is not much different in that regard.

7. The gift shop has no food items so either be prepared to spend a ton of money on food and drinks, or do what we did and go to the local supermerket (at the Strand, a five mnute walk) and pick up expensive (but less expensive) food and drinks there.

8. The maid was annoyed every night that we were not out by 6:30pm so she could do her turn down service.

9. Because the bedroom faced the street, you could hear loud cars, music, etc. every night while trying to go to sleep.

Management Response

(Management representative)
Feb 18, 2008
Thank you for your posting on TripAdvisor.com. We welcome guest comments as this is one active way in which we are able to constantly improve our services and keep communication lines open with our guests.
We apologise if you were not informed that the Hyatt no longer acts as our management company. Hyatt and the Grand Cayman Beach Suites tried to contact everyone possible to inform them of the change of direction in early December. I can reassure you that the ownership of the hotel has not changed and that the owner remains committed to this property and to providing our guests with a wonderful holiday experience.
The Grand Cayman Beach Suites sits upon 250 feet one of the most beautiful sections of Seven Mile Beach - famous for its lack of current and wave action which gives us the crystal clear water that is not found in many other places in the world. One of the pleasures of Seven Mile Beach is that it is completely open for public access and you can walk from one end of the other freely and we are required to abide with local laws that gives access to the general public to enter the hotel in order to maintain that sense of welcoming to all guests of the island.
In order to provide for our hotel guests we have endeavoured to ensure that everything is available right on property. Red Sail Sports is our supplier of all of our watersports activities - sailing, snorkelling, jet-skis and sundry items. We are pleased now to be a boutique style hotel that offers a full range of resort services including golf, spa, full gym, dive operator/watersports on site, tennis courts, three restaurants, in room dining and two pools.
Our goal is to make everyone's experience in Cayman a welcoming one. we hope that you will return to see us one day, if not with us hopefully at a property that fits your needs.

“Not very Hyatty”

Grand Cayman Beach Suites

Not overly impressed with the Hyatt but may be back anyway since this may be the only affordable beach suites. I requested a full balcony room 2 months in advance and didnt get it. big difference between that and a walk out balcony. The suite is not large. The bathrooms are practically in the middle accessible from the bedroom and the living room, no locks - no privacy.
not much complimentary stuff here except barely drinkable cold coffee in the morning. Internet is $13 a day (take your laptop across the street to azzuro caffe for free internet and some nice banana nut crepes). not a very attractive pool but we didnt mind. the pools lounge chairs are very comfortable but no one is using them. If they would only put them on the beach instead.
Drinks were expensive - Around $12

Annoying dance music playing all day (and I love dance music). The beach area is very nice but you got to watch out for large rocks scattered througout.

no problem with the cruisers. Even on the busiest days (mon-wed) there are plenty of quiet spots on SMB.
One huge plus is the central location. walking distance to the supermarket (be careful crossong the street - look right first), a number of restaurants, and 10 minutes from georgetown.
