Stayed in Unit #26 from 05/16 –05/24

The unit was nice and plenty spacious for a 1 bedroom. The kitchen was nicely outfitted as well. View from the balcony was great the beach was maybe 100 feet away. The maid service did a great job and even did our dishes on a couple of occasions, which was above and beyond. We always had extra beach towels and she seemed to come about the same time each day.

The complex seemed pretty quiet and there was no need to get our early to reserve beach chairs or anything like that. The umbrellas were the first to go however. If I had any complaint, it would be that they could use a few more umbrellas. With that said, we were able to get an umbrella everyday. There are more than enough chairs. The trees also provide some shade. The water is as beautiful as I’ve ever seen and the beach is wide with great sand. The Westin and Ritz are either side, but sitting in the middle of the beach area, we rarely heard much in the way of noise from either beach. The water is bathtub warm but does get deep fast. I liked that, but little kids should be watched. It was calm most days and even on the windy days the waves didn’t exceed 3 feet or so. A couple of times some cruisers tried to use some chairs, but there is security and they will approach anyone who isn’t using the VOG blue and white beach towels.

You will see some fish snorkeling from shore, but a better bet is to go over to the Governor’s House. There is a nice little reef about 100 yards off shore. Just aim for the white swim area buoy right in-between the building and the parking lot.

There are plenty of places to eat close by. We ate at 8 different places and walked to them all. Though, I will admit that it depends on your definition of walking distance. My only complaint about the island would be the lack of pedestrian crossing on West Bay road. You need to hustle and the east side of the road is without sidewalks on a lot of areas. The grocery store (Foster’s) is close and similar to US grocery stores. Prices are a bit higher, but I didn’t find them to be totally outrageous for most items.

We did Stingray City through Nativeways and would recommend them. They picked us up and dropped us off. It was a nice size group and boat and much smaller than Red Sail Sports, which is based at the Westin. Captain Marvin’s also has an office across the street.

We wanted a lazy and relaxing beach vacation and this was it and then some. We didn’t see much of the island, but we will do that next time. I’m used to AI’s and this was much more quiet and relaxing. This was about as perfect of a vacation as I’ve had and will certainly be back.

This review will be quite simple as all you need to say is if you like a beach holiday that is completely relaxing then you don't need ever to look any further.

VOG are situated on a great spot on 7 Mile Beach, the apartments are spotless and the maid service is second to none. We had a two week stay at the end of April and everything was fantastic.

This was my 3rd trip to Grand Cayman and I would certainly say this was the best.

We had decided before we travelled that we wouldn't eat out every night but there are so many restaurants to choose from you want to try them all.

I recommend you do hire a car even if for a few days and see the rest of the Island. We took a day off the beach and went right the way round and then drove out to Morgan's Bay to eat at Calypso Grill but we hadn't booked and they were full. However, we ate at the Fishermans Reef next door and had a fantastic meal. We did book for Calypso the next night and although the meal was very good the overall experience wasn't. As it is so popular they tend to really pack you in, not very romantic! Although you do really need to visit for their Sticky Toffee pudding!

Really recommend VOG.

My husband and I just returned from a 1 week stay at VOG. (April 15 -22)

This was our first time to Grand Cayman. We love the beach and make our decision on where to stay based on a nice sandy beach and an ocean with no rocks. We didn’t need anything fancy and didn’t mind making our own breakfast and lunch.

VOG was very nice. We stayed in a large 1 bedroom ocean front unit which was on the bottom floor. It was so close to the beach and had an awesome view.

It had everything we could possibly need including a dishwasher (with soap included) and a microwave. Maid service did a great job cleaning. They were also good about giving us 3-4 clean beach towels everyday.

My husband has a job where he needs to keep in contact on a daily basis. We used the free DSL internet often. It connected easily, was very fast and we never had an issue with it.

The only small issue we had was with the shower. We didn’t know how to turn it on. It took us a while to figure it out. The faucet is spring fed so you had to pull on the piece where the water comes out and then turn it counter clockwise. I had never seen anything like it.

The weather was great the entire week we were there. It was funny because they called it stormy weather on their local news. All stormy meant was that clouds would come by for maybe 10 minutes a few times during the day. We did have high surf for a couple of days. “high” surf on seven mile beach is probably 3’- 4’. Many people still went in the water and played in the waves. The higher surf did bring in a bit of rocks which made it hard on the feet. Once the “storm” was over the water was completely calm. The sand covered most of the rocks. It was hard to believe that it was the same ocean.

I would suggest bringing a small float and a mask. I saw quite a few fish in the water in front of VOG. I also found a couple of medium size conch shells.

There were always enough beach chairs. At the beginning of our week we would go out to the beach at about 9am and easily get a chair under an umbrella or tree. At that point no one was chair saving. Many times we felt like we were the only ones on the beach.

Once the weekend came it was a different story. I happened to look out at 7am and saw 3 people chair saving for large groups. There are only 6 beach umbrellas and they had taken 3 and 2 trees. They did the same thing Sunday morning so a few other people ran out and reserved a spot. Monday morning was back to normal. We had gone to Eats for breakfast. We got to the beach at 10:30 and got an umbrella with no issues.

On cruise ship days quite a few people tried to help themselves to the beach chairs. (Even though it is clearly posted that they were for VOG people only) The security guard did a great job getting them out of the chairs.

The property also had several charcoal grills. It looked like there was 1 for every group of villas. The grills are supposed to be kept away from the units. However many people took the grill and kept it on their patio. I noticed 2 grills on the beach as well so there always seemed to be one available.

The location of VOG is perfect. It is about a 5 minute walk to the grocery store. There were quite a few good restaurants in walking distance. We picked up a free Cayman good taste magazine at the airport. (They have a website as well) It was very helpful. It has a great map of the island and tells you where all the restaurants are. They also have each restaurants menu with pricing and phone numbers.

The day we arrived we were so tired and hungry that we decided to go across the street to Eats for dinner. We ended up going there a few times during our stay. It is a nice casual place with a huge menu. I recommend the breakfast there. The prices are so reasonable and the food is very good.

We went to Ragazzi the second night. We decided to walk. It was a 20 minute walk. Make sure you pack a comfortable pair of foot wear for the walk.

The food was very good. We learned a hard lesson though. Make sure you get tap water unless you want to pay $12.95 for a bottle of spring water.

We ate at Copper Falls steakhouse the third night. It’s a very short walk from the villas. (Next to the grocery store) The rib eye steak was very good. We would rate it the best meal that we had.

The fourth day we rented a jeep from Andy’s and toured the island. Andy’s picked us up at the villas and brought us to their office. The jeep was ok. It was very loud. It sounded like we had a motorcycle. We went to the blow holes first. They were a cool site to see. We had planned to going directly to Rum point but it was cloudy so we took the long way around the island. We stopped at Colliers bay. It was a nice place to stop and we had fun finding different shells including conch shells. After that the sun started to come out so we headed to Rum point.

Rum Point was very beautiful. I recommend seeing it. The color of the water is absolutely gorgeous. They have a beach service bar and outdoor restaurant. You can not bring your own food and beverages. They do have a cooler where you can get free water. The fruity drinks were very good. It was $20 for a mudslide and a virgin daiquiri. The food we had was fair. My cheeseburger was too thick. It tasted like it was frozen and it was hard to chew. The fries were good though.

That night we weren’t in the mood for a big dinner so we walked over to Legends. Legends shares the same menu with Eats. We had great buffalo wings and nachos.

The next night we tried the Cracked Conch restaurant since we still had the car. It had a beautiful outdoor seating area and you had good music from the bar. I didn’t like my meal though. I had the surf and turf special. At first I just blamed it on myself. That’s what I get for ordering a steak at a seafood restaurant. My husband had ordered the snapper with shrimp. He didn’t like it either. He said it was “dry and tasteless.”

Sadly this was the most expensive meal on our trip.

The next day was our last full day. We had run out of food for lunch so we ordered a pizza from Eats and ate on our patio. Once again it was very good.

For dinner we decided to try the fine dine in delivery service. We had a whole chicken dinner for 2 delivered from Chicken - Chicken. It was really good. We had a great meal outside on our patio and saw an incredible sunset. Not a cloud in the sky. A perfect way to end the vacation.

We didn’t do any excursions. We pretty much just lounged on the beach, played in the water, went to eat and toured the island. We had thought about the sting ray excursion but thought the surf was too rough to have a good time.

We really loved the Island. I would definitely go back. The entire island is very beautiful. The locals were so friendly and we always had fast, friendly service. The food was the best that we have had on a vacation. We have been to Aruba, Turks and Caicos, and Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) as well. I would rate Grand Cayman number 1 for the best overall vacation.

Other points –
The airport is very easy. We were on the beach and in the water 1 hour after landing. The cab ride was $23 US.

The Ritz and the Westin had night time bands quite often. So we sat out on the beach and listened to some nice music.

Call ahead and make a reservation. Ask about the dress code. The places we ate had a blend of smart casual (dress shorts/pants – collar shirts) and casual.

When shopping just ask for US when paying – they will give you the total in US. They give change in Cayman. The next time we will bring more $1 and $5 to try and cut down on the amount of Cayman money we get.

We enjoyed our stay here very much. We had a one bedroom oceanview, which was extremely spacious for a couple. (You could squeeze a larger family in this size unit, but you would need a rollaway bed in the living room because the sofa was not a pull-out.) The kitchen was very well stocked with cooking implements and appliances. There was a TV with cable, VCR, and DVD player. There were even books and boardgames. The oceanview units were located across a small courtyard to the beach, and we really did have a nice view of the ocean from our living room and patio area. There was also a charcoal grill out on the patio, which we used several nights.

Maid service came every day except Sunday, but sometimes at 5pm and other days at 10:30am, which was a bit inconvenient. The manager was friendly and attentive to our requests but was not terribly knowledgeable about some of the sites on the island.

The beach was gorgeous. It is much less crowded than the Westin and the Ritz Carlton beaches on either side. Our only slight complaint with the beach was the shortage of umbrellas. There were 6 umbrellas for the whole beach, and chairs under the umbrellas were claimed with someone's towel before 8AM each morning. There were also trees that provided imperfect shade, but it was still annoying that the property advertised beach umbrellas on their website and failed to deliver.

Within walking distance we had a liquor store and barebones mini-mart across the street, as well as a diner called Eats. It was about a 10 minute walk down the road to a large supermarket. There was a public bus that would take you up and down 7 mile beach for CI$2. However, if you are traveling with children or anyone less than spry, be forewarned that the street is very heavily trafficked with absolutely no crosswalks of any kind. Even if you are taking the bus, you will have to cross this street. You might want to rent a car.

We should note that both of our complaints (the shortage of umbrellas and crosswalks) were more symptoms of the island in general than this property. We walked along most of 7 mile beach and checked out lots of other condo properties, and they all seemed to be very short on umbrellas. If you really wanted a guaranteed umbrella, you could get one at the public beach across from the Marriott Courtyard for something like $20.

Overall, we would rate this property somewhere between a 4 and a 5.

I loved staying here. I went in October, and the weather was gorgeous. I would agree with all the other reviews; our apartment was quiet and well-equipped, and literally a few steps from the beach, across a small lawn. I rolled out of bed in the morning & went onto the beach to sleep in the sun! I'm not a swimmer, but I could wade out & see shoals of mulit-coloured fish. Wonderful. It felt very liberating, too, to be able to run along the beach or do yoga - lots of Americans around so no-one stared, as they would in Europe. It is easy to go up to the end of the beach & find some peace & quiet. We hired a moped & visited Hell, and the turtle farm, and took picnics to go birdwatching. It's a lovely island, didn't see to be any poverty. The capital gets very busy when the cruise ships are in. The only problem with Grand Cayman is that it is very expensive - even the fish has to be bought in, apparently, so costs a fortune, so we did cook quite a lot for ourselves.
