“Managing expectations is key”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

As the title states managing expectations is the key to deciding if this place is for you or not.
It is a basic slightly run-down average place with close access to the beach and walking distance to bars and restaurants.

Good: Beach access, pools, price

Bad: Nothing outstandingly bad. No deal beakers, except maybe the rowdy tenants, but definite inconveniences. Such as, minimal towels, no dish soap, missing knobs, no place to hang clothes.

This place rents out as full-time living quarters, so there was a group of rowdy people, that liked to crank the karaoke and boisterous attitudes pretty late (after midnight) the whole week we were there. There may be a quieter wing, but this didn't really bother us much since we are night owls ourselves, but it was noticeable.

The maids were very stingy with the towels. Got only 1 bath towel and 2 small ones for 2 adults. No bath mat and no washcloths. Asked for more and got them, but the next day they were gone and not been replenished. So asked for more and hid them in the dresser drawer and reused them, we do this at home anyway, so not a big deal. Also we had packed a few extra beach towels, so this really was more of a game by the end of the week.

Place is run down, there were knobs missing on the dresser, and no bar or hangers in the closet. Again we improvised, swapped a knob from the night stand ourselves, and all our stuff was dresser stuff anyway, so we folded everything and used the closet cupboard for shoes and dirty laundry. No alarm clock, but my cell phone had one. Tiny TV and fuzzy channels, but only caught news updates before bed, and hubby looked for a couple sports updates, so didn't really matter. Again these things aren't deal beakers for us, but they may be for others.

So if you are looking for a budget friendly place close to everything, and you can look past the shabby this may be for you. If you have the budget and like a few more amenities you probably won't like it here.

Room Tip: If you need quiet, go higher up, and away from the beach bar at the pool.

Treasure Island Resort is very reasonable priced considering it's competitors. It's a great option for those on a budget who are prepared to put up with a few misgivings. The resort could do with a bit of an overall spray with a high pressure cleaner, or just a bit of a spruce-up.

The rooms are generously spacious and the kitchen we had was featured enough so we could dine in frequently. There was no provided dish soap so you need to wait for cleaning staff or 'improvise'. Our coffee machine had not been cleaned since the prior guests but staff at the front desk were good enough to swap it out. The beds are very comfortable and the linens clean. There can be some noise if you're on the bar side of the resort. Staff were also good enough to organise a rapid unblocking of the toilet from prior guests. Generally though we felt staff were a little ambivalent in conversation.

The pools are great, clean and nice to sit around. The attached dive shop uses them frequently for training in the afternoons so they can be busy but if you;re into diving, there's a handy office onsite to organise your trips. There's also a general information desk to assist with organising other tours. If you don't have a car there's plenty of dining options within walking distance and some great budget options too.

A great place to stay, just set your expectations.

Lost reservation, kept waiting 3 hours for a room. Room given had no shampoo, conditioner, towels, not ocean front as payed for. Was asked to talk to the manager at 11 the next morning concerning the room. 11 o'clock arrived to meet manager waited till 12:30 then told we would have to move to a new room. repacked and given the new room at 3:30. new room had no phone, no tv, no pots and pans, no ice bucket, no silverware, no plates nor glasses, no shampoo, no conditioner, no towels. there was a coffee pot that we used to get ice. (ice was only available on the 5th flr. we were ground level in the 2nd room. This room was not ocean front or even ocean view. the view out the sliding glass door was of the men and womans bathroom. When I asked the manager for silverware we waited 2 more hrs. then had to go looking for the "manager" who said she was "really busy". Checked out, went down the beach to another hotel and saved our honeymoon.

Room Tip: i implore you as strongly as possible do not consider until management change.

I would not recommend Treasure Island unless you just have no other reasonable choice. When we were ready to go to bed we found out there was no hot water. The front desk led us to believe that the water had been off earlier in the day and just needed time to heat up. Never did. The next morning, while I was waiting to check out, I heard the staff tell another guest that the hot water had been out for several days and it would not be fixed soon. Since we were in transit and leaving that morning, it no longer mattered. The second issue with the hotel was that the internet connection was dial-up and they only provided a 2 meter long cable. Unfortunately, it wouldn't reach the desk, and I was left to manage my laptop on my, well, my lap. That was only the beginning, however, because the internet service never would work and the staff was untrained in trouble shooting. Never could get the balcony door to lock. Finally, the place was noisy with people out of their rooms making noise until 1:00 in the morning. For US$179 a night this was a poor choice.

We've stayed here several times over the years and it's always been great. The staff are friendly but inobtrusive, the condos are spacious and clean. We've generally opted for one set back a bit from the action, since we have young kids and it can get noisy some nights, especially weekends, by the pool. I bet the ocean-front units are great, though- it's a WONDERFUL private little beach and has some great snorkeling! A lot of the other snorkeling spots have suffered after some major blows from hurricanes, but this one is still great- we have seen turtles galore, a curious octopus, and more.

Love the pools and the swim-up bar - the place is kid-friendly in general but the bar is popular. The location in general is good as it is a bit removed from the party scene on 7-mile, but walking distance to a few bars and restaurants.

A few drawbacks to the unit we've stayed in - they may have updated since, I am hoping they have with the "Sunset Cove" makeover, but the shower/tub unit was getting a little dingy. Mostly we had all the kitchen utensils and pots we needed, but they could've restocked more carefully - of course these are someone's vacation home, but since they do rent it out, they should pay attention to that sort of thing. (Restaurants on Grand Cayman are mega-pricey though, and we love being able to do our own thing, especially with kids.)

All in all we had a grea time and TI met our needs, can't wait to get back, and get used to calling it "Sunset Cove"!

Room Tip: Stay further away from the pool if you have kids or go to bed early!

I went on a trip with 3 girl friends last April and out of all the hotels in Grand Cayman, Treasure Island was the most economical place for us. It cost about $120/night for a room with 2 queen size beds plus a kitchenette.

We enjoyed the fact that there's a swimming pool at the hotel and the beach is less than 5 minutes away. It was nice having the option of going to the pool or beach at any given time.

The only negative thing about our experience was the lack of room service that we received during our stay there. We had to ask the front desk to send someone to clean up our room because they do not come everyday to do housekeeping. After 2 days, there were piles of dishes on the counter that needed to get washed. It was pricey to buy dish soaps at the store so we did not buy any there. We did ask the staff to give us some dish soap so we could wash the dishes ourselves, but they refused to give us some. In the 7 days that we were there, house keeping came to our room maybe twice after some serious begging. If this issue could be resoved, we would've had a much better review for this hotel.

I was given a trip for my birthday to Grand Cayman. We stayed Dec 24th through Dec 28th, 2012. This hotel has beautiful grounds but I have to agree with most everyone else that the rooms could use some work. We stayed in room 5208. Not dirty but not sparkling clean either--I put a towel on the floor when I came in from the beach and it came up clean but there is dirt in the corners and they really needed to wash the door in the bathroom--you could actually see fingerprints in the grime on the door. The shower had very little pressure but it did get warm enough for me. When it's 85 degrees outside I really don't need a scalding hot shower. We could not get the balcony door open when we first arrived but maintenance showed up within 15 minutes of our call and fixed it. There are mis-matched cups and dishes and no dish towels or dish soap to do dishes. We ate out the entire time anyway but it would have been nice to actually wash our coffee cups. (oh--and no coffee in the room and the little store in the lobby does not sell it either) The cleaning crew somehow left us towels the second day but did not clean the room-- When we called the front desk they were very apologetic but stated the cleaning staff were gone for the day so the room would not be taken care of. The beds are very comfortable but the TV's are tiny compared to most hotels I have stayed in. Yes--the elevator is old and pretty dirty but I was wearing my water shoes so it didn't really bother me. We did hear roosters every morning and saw several of them wandering all over the island. It was not a problem for us-- My mother usually wakes up the roosters--If you are staying in the "hotel" part of the resort(they have condos too that are right on the beach), you have a bit of a walk to the beach and limited views of the water but you can dip your toes into pristine swimming pools for most of the way. We got there early for check in but it was not a problem for reception. They were very nice to us the entire time and we never had a problem with anyone being rude at all. The pools are wonderful. The beach is nice and clean. It is quiet and I found all the staff to be friendly. The food at the swim up bar was really good--I had some sort of asian chicken lettuce wraps that were yummy--recommended by the bartender. I did not purchase this trip so I don't know how it compares regarding prices of other hotels in the area but I was satified with the hotel.
