I think every aspiring business should look at the new owners / management of the Triple Crown and use them as a lesson in how not to run a business.
Read the reviews about the place, it was much loved and had a lot of regulars who kept the place ticking over. The bar wasn't perfect, it did need refining and improving to make it profitable.
However, getting rid of karaoke night has turned the busiest bar in Cayman on a Friday night into a ghost town (although I think the ghosts were discussing not going in anymore too). Add to that the end of the quiz nights for local charities, the end of steak night, curry night, etc etc, and you have destroyed everything that made money in the bar.
The bar was also the go to place for football (as in the sport where people kick the ball) and was packed most weekends with English people supporting their teams.
The new management have taken away EVERYTHING that made the Crown a place worth visiting. Instead of adding to the bar to make the other nights profitable, they have just chosen to kill off the custom they did have.
The one thing they have done to try to be profitable is to increase prices and cancel any existing special offers.
The new direction is to become a trendy American style steakhouse. This is reflected in the current menu. A menu which may list a vegetarian option, but after three weeks of being told such things were unavailable, I am starting to think this isn't an actual option. It is also reflected in the pushing of UFC fights and American Football games, rather than real football.
What they are doing looks like they want to run a bar their way, with what they would personally like in a bar. Sadly, they seem to have forgotten that making a success of a business is getting customers in and doing what customers want and need. Doing things to make you happy personally isn't generally considered smart in business.
My personal highlight are the completely mindless posts on the official Facebook page by the front of house manager. I get the impression that whoever is posting these things is desperately trying to drive away customers. This week, one of the main posts was to advertise a different bar! Seriously, how can you run a business when you're telling customers to go somewhere else?.
I'm sure I am not alone in missing loveable grumpy Pat, Mackem Richie, and of course the lovely Lynsey. I feel sorry for the remaining long term staff, Phaide, Jenny, and James. Watching your workplace die in front of you due to mismanagement must be hard.
The Crown is dead. I wish the new owners / management good luck with this, because they sure as s**t don't have any business acumen to run the place. Then again, I probably don't wish them luck. They are unwilling to listen to customers and have taken something great and destroyed it, so they deserve every cent that they put into the Crown to go down the drain.
RIP Triple Crown
