“Eldemire' GH is great!”

Eldemire's Tropical Island Inn

Remember, you will not be staying at a condo on 7 mile beach. Eldemire's GH is located in a quiet Camaynian neighborhood which my husband and I thought was lovely.
We went to Grand Cayman, for a dive vacation, in Oct. 2006. Of course the reef is still pretty battered after Hurricane Ivan but there was plenty signs of regrowth and healing. A lot of great fish but the sponges and sea fans were scoured out by Ivan. The Island's dive community went to great lengths to get all of the debris removed from the reef = CONGRATS!
While we were "on island" there were tropical storms in the Caribbean which whipped the water up. Visibility was very low (75+ft.) Some shore dives were impossible for safe entry and we would opt for the other side of the island. (We had a rental car).
Eldemire's is an easy walk to shore dive from Sunset House, and a nice lunch after the dive at their restaurant.
Eldemire's was a lengthy walk to town for groceries (OK walking there but a bit sweaty walking back with bags of groceries). The neighborhood was friendly and would give rides when going the same way. Nice way to chat with local Camaynians - especially interesting to hear stories of Hurricane Ivan.
We stayed at Eldemire's for only 3 days - in their apartment by the pool (see pics). Pool was small but wonderful to cool off in and read by. Apartment was great. Nice little kitchen, eating area, living room, bedroom and bathroom. We shopped in town and ate most meals at our little apartment & picnic lunches by the caribbean = perfect!
Tootie was helpful. Staff was good. Guest house was basic and clean. Remember, you are not staying at a condo on 7 mile beach but you are staying in a basic & clean guest house located in a quiet & safe Caymanian neighborhood. ENJOY!

We were so lucky to find Eldemire's B&B Guest House and spent a fabulous 10 day holiday there just this past February. The facility includes the big house, where rooms are available, and use of the large kitchen downstairs is available for the guests use. Also included are a few larger suites and cottages which have their own kitchenette. There is a pool and BBQ equipment for the guests use, as well as bike rental at a very nominal fee. 10 minutes from the airport and a very quick cab ride for approximately $15.00 USD, Eldemire's is located just outside of George Town and is easily walked in about 15 minutes. There is also a very delightful public beach less than a 10 minute walk away.
We took a room in the guest house, the rates being a bit lower than in the larger suites or cottages. It was roomy and comfortable and also included T.V. A simple but very satisfying breakfast of coffee, toast, cereal and fruit was served in the dining room. If you did not choose to eat lunch or dinner out, the kitchen was available for preparing your own meals. We were more than comfortable there, and felt more like family than guests. The neighborhood was very quiet and restful, and everything we wanted to do during the day was just a short walk away.
If you want to spend a lot of money on a fancy, big name, crowded hotel, with equally crowded beaches, a good distance from town, then stay on 7-Mile Beach. It is very nice there and I have done that. But if you want peace and quiet, equally lovely accomodations, as well as access to restaurants, bars, a lovely beach, and town, than Eldemire's B&B Guest House is for you. It is number 1 with us, and we look forward to going back there again and again.

We were looking for an inexpensive accomodation before an extended dive trip on the Aggressor. Our room was clean and had a shared kitchen with another apartment. We had the place to ourselves. The pool was small but there was ample shade. A bit of a walk into town but definitely doable. Sunset House was very close by so we were able to do a shore dive and have dinner at MyBar. I'd definitely recommend this place and would stay there again.

“Not what was expected... ”

Eldemire's Tropical Island Inn

Based on the earlier reviews at Fodor's, I was expecting something quite different than what I got. I knew that the location was not near 7-mile beach but was optimistic that Smith's Cove would be a nice place to hang out on a daily basis and we could make the trip to 7-mile maybe a couple of times. Well, Smith's Cove is so small, I took 1 picture there and got the entire beach from side to side! The only thing the place has going for it is the ironshore. It is very cool and marine life gets trapped in little pools on it when waves come in making for some interesting searches for barnacles and small fish and such. Apparently the snorkeling is pretty good but we didn't try it because of the sharp cove rocks and water movement.

Because our beach hopes were dashed at the cove, we made a daily trip to 7-mile beach. But taxis are very expensive so we decided to get our exercise and walk the 4 miles to the beach every morning. 7-mile beach is of course gorgeous and it was worth the effort (and blisters) getting there!

I also knew that the guest house was in a Cayman neighborhood and not a resort area but wow...I wasn't quite prepared for the bare minimum either! I was expecting this B&B to be like a typical US B&B. It is not! The rooms were clean but there was nothing warm and welcoming about the place. We never even met Tootie until the end of our 2nd day there. She IS very nice and helpful and we thought she was great. It is just we had unrealistic expectations of the accomodations. We did indeed get a free trip to Stingray City which was great. We did have to pay for a taxi there and back but the trip itself was free and one of the highlights of our stay.

Now, let's talk about breakfast! Another reviewer said it was healthy and substantial. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! This was another disappointment. I wasn't expecting a big spread or anything but I was expecting a few choices of homemade goodies. There was nothing of the sort. EVERY morning there was the same thing...white or wheat thawed sliced bread next to a toaster with bowls of margarine and strawberry jam and a tiny apple on your plate. THAT's ALL! Drinks were coffee or orange juice. We got so tired of our piece of bread and apple to start the day that we hit a grocery store on our way to 7-mile beach to get a few different things. I guess what I am saying is...don't expect breakfast at this "bed and breakfast"!

As for service, you get nothing you don't ask for. We were there 5 days and our room was never cleaned once or checked for any needs. We had to request more toilet paper and clean towels which they were glad to get for us but again, we had to ask. Don't expect any perks.

I hope I don't sound too harsh about this B&B. I am just trying to give a more realistic picture using my own experience. The people there are all very nice and we truely enjoyed them. We just wish we hadn't gone completely off of the prior reviews. If you choose to stay here, just know what you are getting into and you'll be fine. But go with high expectations and you'll be disappointed.

After having searched and researched for some where to stay during our holiday to Grand Cayman myself and 2 girlfriends decided on Eldemire's Guest House. It was an excellent decision. We arrived and were greeted by the friendly staff and were taken immediately to our 2 units. One was a one bedroom apartment and the other was a 2 bedroom apartment. They were spacious, clean and well kept considering that these were rentals. They was every cooking utensil that we needed in our kitchens. The area is nice and quiet(with the exceptions of the roosters) When I return to Grand Cayman I will stay there again.
