Based on the earlier reviews at Fodor's, I was expecting something quite different than what I got. I knew that the location was not near 7-mile beach but was optimistic that Smith's Cove would be a nice place to hang out on a daily basis and we could make the trip to 7-mile maybe a couple of times. Well, Smith's Cove is so small, I took 1 picture there and got the entire beach from side to side! The only thing the place has going for it is the ironshore. It is very cool and marine life gets trapped in little pools on it when waves come in making for some interesting searches for barnacles and small fish and such. Apparently the snorkeling is pretty good but we didn't try it because of the sharp cove rocks and water movement.
Because our beach hopes were dashed at the cove, we made a daily trip to 7-mile beach. But taxis are very expensive so we decided to get our exercise and walk the 4 miles to the beach every morning. 7-mile beach is of course gorgeous and it was worth the effort (and blisters) getting there!
I also knew that the guest house was in a Cayman neighborhood and not a resort area but wow...I wasn't quite prepared for the bare minimum either! I was expecting this B&B to be like a typical US B&B. It is not! The rooms were clean but there was nothing warm and welcoming about the place. We never even met Tootie until the end of our 2nd day there. She IS very nice and helpful and we thought she was great. It is just we had unrealistic expectations of the accomodations. We did indeed get a free trip to Stingray City which was great. We did have to pay for a taxi there and back but the trip itself was free and one of the highlights of our stay.
Now, let's talk about breakfast! Another reviewer said it was healthy and substantial. NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! This was another disappointment. I wasn't expecting a big spread or anything but I was expecting a few choices of homemade goodies. There was nothing of the sort. EVERY morning there was the same thing...white or wheat thawed sliced bread next to a toaster with bowls of margarine and strawberry jam and a tiny apple on your plate. THAT's ALL! Drinks were coffee or orange juice. We got so tired of our piece of bread and apple to start the day that we hit a grocery store on our way to 7-mile beach to get a few different things. I guess what I am saying is...don't expect breakfast at this "bed and breakfast"!
As for service, you get nothing you don't ask for. We were there 5 days and our room was never cleaned once or checked for any needs. We had to request more toilet paper and clean towels which they were glad to get for us but again, we had to ask. Don't expect any perks.
I hope I don't sound too harsh about this B&B. I am just trying to give a more realistic picture using my own experience. The people there are all very nice and we truely enjoyed them. We just wish we hadn't gone completely off of the prior reviews. If you choose to stay here, just know what you are getting into and you'll be fine. But go with high expectations and you'll be disappointed.
