“Perfect Diver Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

I just spent a week at Sunset House as part of the PADI Total Submersion Event. Perfect hotel for the serious diver. A variety of rooms offer affordable options for those not needing an ocean front room ( although there are plenty of those as well). Rooms are comfortable yet simply appointed. If you are planning in staying in your room all day, this might not be the place for you. As a matter of fact, Cayman might not be the place of you. Sunset Divers are right on premise and as soon as you fill out the paperwork you are ready to dive the house reef which can keep you occupied all week even if you did no boat dive ( but do the boats; they reach some amazing dive sites in less than 15 minutes). Centrally located to most of the great sites of the George Town side of the island. My Bar is a well stocked thatched hut outdoor bar that also attract dive staff from surrounding shops.

Excellent restaurant & bar - good food - reasonable prices compared to Georgetown. Rooms are basic, clean, but old! Excellent diving & dive masters. We plan to go back next year.

Room Tip: Ask for the ocean view...newer section, nicer room. It cost a little more but worth it.

As others have said, this is a place for divers - not fancy, but great for diving gear and wet people. Our room was ocean view, but the palm trees obscured the view. Apparently it was bigger than the older rooms on the property nearer the dive shop and bar. We had 2 queen beds and lots of space in the room to spread out gear. The bathroom was really nice with a spacious counter, and the shower was really long - perfect for rinsing gear.

Breakfast at the restaurant was filling, tasty and served quickly. We always ate lunch at My Bar, and the variety of food was excellent, especially the curries and other Indian options. The amount of food was generous also.

The dive shop is fantastic and the staff are fun, safety conscious and always willing to help with just about everything.

Our major complaint was lack of WiFi service in the room. We had to carry our laptop into the front lobby and sit there or the "Internet Cafe" to get service.

Room Tip: Oceanview rooms cost more, but the space is worth it, if you don't mind walking farther to the d...

I've stayed here many times and it's my hotel of choice when diving on Cayman. The last couple of trips, though, I feel like it's slipping a little. The dive folks seem the same, but the bar, and in particular the hotel front office, seem to have gone downhill. The night clerk in the hotel this time was rude and didn't seem to know much -- she made clear she just wanted us to go away and not bother her. That's a far cry from the friendly, eager-to-help service we've experienced in the past.

I'm not writing them off yet, but I definitely feel that they don't have the edge that they used to have.

Room Tip: Pay extra for the ocean view rooms. It's worth it.

Sunset House is a dive resort for scuba divers. If you are not a diver, then there are plenty of exceptional properties on 7 Mile Beach. However, divers will find everything they need to have a great vacation.

Rooms: The rooms are set up for divers. All tile with patios to dry dive gear. We stayed in one of the apartments with a dining room, den, and full kitchen. It was perfect for the week. The rooms were recently remodeled and do not show their 50 years of age. The bed was comfortable, the AC could chill down the room in minutes, and the noise level was quiet at night. All rooms have a flat screen TV with US channels.

Dive Shop: The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and stress safety above all else. Our family has Junior Divers, so they put all the groups with Junior Divers on one boat. We particularly enjoyed Jax and Aaron; they are both excellent dive masters with a good sense of humor. The boats are in good shape, despite their age, and all have fresh water and a toilet on board.

WiFi: Sunset offers free internet service, but a single in the room was only a sometime thing. You can always get a signal in the lobby, and there is a free computer to use there as well.

Shopping: You can rent a car, but George Town is less than a mile down the road.

Overall a very good experience.

This was my 3rd visit to SH over the past 6 years. They are consistent with a great dive staff. rooms are clean and comfortable. MY BAR is the hot spot at the end of the day to watch the sunset. Food has been improving with a lot of great indian food choices. Prices are comperable for Cayman.

Divers keep in mind that you will get 72 CF tanks and not 80's while diving here. This limits their strict bottom time to 50 minutes. That being said, 50 minutes gives you pleanty of time to explore the numerous dive sites available. They also had specialty dives to Stingray City and the Kittywake Wreck during the week. House reef is nice too to go hang with the Mermaid and the local wreck.

Staff is friendly and the service is very good. Be patient when it is busy. Cathy Church's photo shop is amazing and you can really get some excellent prices on cameras and u/w housings.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for an Ocean view... cant go wrong there!

Dear RicoDiver,

I want to thank you for taking time to write the review and I appreciate the comments. One thing that we obviously forgot to mention to you is that we have ordered 300 new 80cf tanks that should be on island by the end of April and in service shortly after that. So the next time you're down (hopefully sooner than three years) you should have plenty of bottom time!!

Sincerely,

Ken Thompson, CHA

This is a dive resort for divers , and it does exactly what it advertises to do . If you want a fancy hotel dont stay at Sunset. If you want a great, safe diving experience , with excellent and dedicated dive masters and instructors go ! The team here surpass any other dive team we have found ...and we have tried quiet a few world wide . We were so impressed that we have returned year on year to have all our children trained by the experienced and friendly staff . Nothing seems too much to ask from them and they are always happy to help . The rooms at Sunset are designed with divers in mind, and that suits our family just fine. The well maintained dive boats are excellent . The dive masters always offer shallow and deep guided dives if you want them . They give a full boat , safety and dive brief . All levels of diving ability are catered for . The experience level in our group ranges from instructor to junior open water and we are always very satisified with our diving experience. I notice that other comments refer to the wi fi , well ok , but, if you walk a few metres to the lobby there isn't a problem. It could be improved though . The food at Sunset is very good , served until 10pm and reasonably priced compared to the rest of the island . We have always found the staff to be very attentive and have never been served a bad plate of food from the wide menu. I think if you are diving in a group , or just going on your own, Sunset is definately the right choice . Interestingly each year we always find familiar faces on the dive boats ...why ? Because people return to Sunset year on year , just as we do , and plan to do again. See you in October .... PADI how it should be .One word of warning ...watch those Cayman cab drivers , they will, if allowed to, over charge.

Room Tip: I'm reluctant to say for fear of our rooms being booked solid , but if you ask for the rooms tha...
