THE TURTLE FARM . A new home is now open for the Boatswains Beach Turtle farm. Pop for the full tour, though pricey it can occupy the entire day. At the beginning of the tour is the turtle farm and breeding program. A well -versed guide will lead you thorough the maze of tanks housing various ages of green sea turtles as well as rare turtles from around the world. Stand on the bridge and watch the biologists hand feed the four large nurse sharks. Go down to the observation area and watch the 6 brown sharks feed.

The snorkel lagoon, a 1.3 million gallon water park is home to thousands of brightly coloured fish. Gear is availabe for free from the life guard. A glass wall allows snorkelers to come up close and personal with an array of sharks, eels, groupers, and other fish.

A Nature Trail, complete with butterfly gardens and a chance to see the local silver thatch tree, bananna orchid and other native fauna. A small cave system called the “Blue Hole” is found at the end of this winding West Bay Woodlands.

There is also the Aviary with a selection of birds found through out the Caribbean and is also home to the Cayman Parrot, these colorful and social birds are found no where else in the carribbean. Thre is a shore line nursey, housing an assortment of jouvenile fish and some of the islands famed Blue Iguanas. Boatswains Beach is a must –see for visiting Cayman with kids, and an educational and fun experience for everyone.

The Turtle themed gift shop has a lot of great gifts all reasonably priced. My daughter bought a barrette that was made by local disabled children. Staff at Boatswains Beach, most of them Caymanian, are very hospitable and anxious to share their culture and the warmth of traditional Caymanian hospitality with their guests.

If you are staying on the island, try to go on Friday, saturday, Sunday or Monday when there are few if any cruise ships in port. without all of the boat people it is peacefuland calm, and a relaxing experience.

We went with our three daughters (10, 7, 3) in April 2007 and it was a wonderful experience. We did the snorkeling in the fresh water pool and were able to see the sharks through the glass tank. The breeding tanks was great to see and trying to hold the little turtles was great. It was very clean and great service. There was a tour guide, she was great and made the experience memorable for our family. Later we went across the way to eat dinner and watched the sunset. Just Beautiful :-)

We visited the Grand Cayman Turtle Farm in Feb 2008. We were disappointed with the overcrowded tanks that were very dirty. The turtles were in fairly shallow tanks with murky green smelly water. People were grabbing some of the younger ones right out of their tanks so they could have their pictures taken with them and there was no one to stop them.

We went to the Boatswain's Beach/Cayman Turtle Farm on a cruise ship excursion during the first week of November 2007.
The trip was coordinated by the cruise ship which, by nature, is overpriced to begin with. The weather was mediocre that day and the sun was peeking out between rounds of light drizzle but my kids enjoyed it nonetheless.

We had taken the children to the Turtle farm previously when some were still infants, and Boatswain's was being constructed and I have been to the Turtle farm a few times when it was across the street, down the road when I was younger. It is definitely more touristy, and I feel it lacks some of the charm it had in its previous incarnations.

The thing I enjoyed the most was the snorkeling lagoon. Since the weather was disagreeable, the snorkeling lagoon offered a pleasant, controlled environment for my boys, ages 8 and 5, to snorkel. My one son has a visual impairment, and it was exciting for me to see him following the little schools of fish in the lagoon. The drawback to the lagoon for me was the algae, I'm not sure what it is like at other times, but there was a lot of loose bits of algae floating around the lagoon, so much that my younger son asked me if it was fish poop. The swimming area and little beach area was nice enough for my youngest, age 3.

I was glad that Boatswain's has a shower area to rinse off near the lagoon. Especially since it was a cruise ship excursion, and we wanted to do some shopping in Georgetown before heading back to the ship.

The employees seemed friendly enough. The lifeguard at the lagoon was an experienced dive master, and he talked with me about the diving on the island. The children LOVED the holding the turtles and they enjoyed the lagoon/pool. They also enjoyed the birds in the aviary. Restaurant/Bar was good.

All I can say is that the experience was adequate. The price of admission was high, but we used the facilities to their fullest and the children had an enjoyable day despite the inclimate weather. On a personal level, I feel that it's unfortunate that it has become so commercial.

“So Sad”

Cayman Turtle Farm

How the Cayman Turtle Farm has changed since the time I grew up in West Bay during the 1970s !!! $75US for the wet tour! Yikes!! The website claims an $18 entrance, but I could not get in for less than $50US. What gives?
I visted the new location across West Bay Road which replaced what used to be a conservancy. The transition from breed conservation to meat farming is disheartening and apparently expensive. Who knew it would cost more to sell meat at $30 a pound versus saving an endangered species without profit?
Inclusions are viewing the turtles in open top tanks, viewing a giant fish tank , walking the aviary, swimming in a chlorine or saltwater pool.
The bird santuary in the farm is a nice addition and it is heartwarming to see the beloved Cayman Parrot trying to make a comeback. The staff in the santuary were wonderful and clearly loved what they did. The front entrance staff...not so much.

Recommendation: Do not buy the turtle soup (aka turtle water) way over priced, will give you a case of the runs and you will feel guilty afterwards (without the pleasure). Actually that advice stands for the turtle farm altogether.
Just watch them on live cam at [-].

Don't forget the ky whichever way you go.
