Morritt's Tortuga Club & Resort

We went to Morritts the middle of July for our honeymoon. They upgraded us to an ocean front because of that, which made the entire trip. I must say it was wonderful. We had a ocean front balcony on the the 4th floor. We pretty much had the beach to ourselves everyday. It was amazing. The beach was a bit rocky in parts and also even more rocky in certain parts of the ocean but we went there every day, and barely went to the pool. We literally were the only people on our side of the beach several days we were there. The weather was great. Too hot to sit in the sun without shade for a long time, but it hardly rained, only a few storms at night.

The downside to this place is it was extremely expensive to eat there and drink, but so is everywhere in Grand Cayman. We ended up going to the local grocery store that is a few feet away and got somet things to cook for dinner a few nights. We also got some beer and wine next door. I loved that we had our own little kitchen. We ate breakfast in every day except one. The breakfast buffe there was okay.

We went next door to get some alcohol. A case of beer was over $50.00!! Wine wasn't quite as bad, but it still was cheaper than buying our drinks at the pool every day.

This trip was exactly what we were hoping for, a peaceful, relaxing honeymoon. There wasn't much night life but we weren't really looking for that. They did have a karaoka night which was fun and we played beer pong one day at the pool which was also fun. We went out to dinner a few nights...Light House, Portofino. Both good, nothing spectacular, definitely overpriced . Rum Point is gorgeous and not to be missed and definitely go to Sting Ray city on 7 mile beach.

We stayed at the Westin on the other side (7 mile) for a few days after Morritts and it was not the same. We loved Morritts, much more and the West side is it's own little peace of paradise.
I highly recommend it and if you can get an ocean front, it's well worth it. The view couldn't be beat. It was gorgeous.

Bottom line if you're looking to party and go crazy this isn't the place for you. If you're looking for a relaxing vacation this is the place to go. It's not the Ritz but who needs it when you're in paradise.

I just got home from one week on Grand Cayman. My family and I stayed on the East End at Morritt's Tortuga Club. This spot was fantastic. We did some great snorkling just steps from our room. There are several pools here, the Grand Pool (an infinity pool) was just great. One of my favorite parts of this resort was Mimi's Dock Bar. Very friendly bartenders, excellent service and great drinks were had each day (thanks to Alan and Dave). There were some fun activities held on the dock a few nights. Also, I just could not get enough of the delicious and well priced Blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich. Just fantastic! You will not be disappointed here.

Our first visit to the Morritt's, as time share owners. We enjoyed a well appointed pool side studio room with FULLY equipped kitchen, full bath, queen bed and private deck overlooking pool. The resort was all we hoped for, as active as you wished, or as quiet as you wanted. We rented a car and enjoyed the scenic drive from the airport to the resort. Used the car sparingly during the week, but did go to Rum Point, don't miss it, beautiful. Also ate dinner at Vivines Kitchen and Over the Edge, both local restaraunts with good food at fair prices and a local feel, highly recommend. A lot of earlier reviews complain about electric charge and room taxes; we didn't worry about our electric, just turned off air while we were out and paid $31.00 for the week. The room taxes were enacted to help island rebuild from hurricane, started with hotels and was recently added to time share units, $8 per night, this is a nat'l tax not a Morritt's tax. I have to agree that drink prices were high, but there is a well stocked liquor store right next door and we made all our own. The grocery store just down the street (walking distance) is fully stocked and you can get all your basic supplies or everything to cook full meals in the room. We however, coming from the NE (Jersey) really didn't find the food prices that high. Both locally or at the resort. We ate out every night and found nothing really over priced. Snorkling off the Morritts beach was great. You really can have a wondeful vacation with out ever leaving this resort. Or you can use it as a great home base and explore as much of the island as you want. We were 100% satisfied with the resort, the food, our room, the activities and the helpful staff. We are already planning next years trip, and can not wait to return to the Morritts!!

“Love the Morritts Seaside and Grand”

The key to the Morritts is staying in the Seaside or Grand buildings if possible. These are both cement with elevators, ocean view and less than 7 years old. The Seaside is brand new and there is a second being built.

If you are in the Tortuga, the ocean building is best. It is wood and older but was gutted to the bone after the hurricane and everything has been re-done. They are beggining to do similar upgrades to the pool units so unless you are traveling in the next month or so, you can probably expect to see these units upgraded.

The resort has 3 really nice pools. The infinity was replaced after the hurricane and is brand new. The other two are quieter and nicer and protected if windy.

The resturant (David) opened in Nov 07 and is pretty nice. You have a second resturant choice next door at the Reef Resort that is pretty good. You have two outdoor bars between the two resorts that sit side by side.

All units have kitchens here since it's a timeshare property. A grocery store across the street that is brand new is a god send.

You have 2 dive shops that depart from both the morritts and reef. You have a well stocked liquor store in the reef.

You can definately have a great time without a car but having a car is nice.

I say 20m to Rum Point and 45m to town but drive on the faster side and know the roads.

Reccomend this resort highly....it's not the Ritz but is a good clean resort with a great beach on the worlds best island. You won't pay $1000 a night to stay here and can have a great vacation here.

The Tortuga Club is basically a timeshare. All rooms are suites with one or 2 bedrooms. We have been to many timeshares before and found them to be quite reasonable.

Unfortunately for the Tortuga Club, they were hit by a major hurricane a few years ago and are struggling to recover. They lost 2 buildings, one of which has been replaced and the other is but a picture on a billboard!

We found the staff to be very friendly and accomodating, albeit the product they had to work with.

The rooms are fair. The ammenities are poor. The towels threadbare and the sheets not fitting the beds properly so that when you roll over you become wrapped in a caccoon. The soaps were the smallest and only 2 were given out for our week stay. The 19" old tube TV only had the major networks, with very poor reception.

The public areas were large, but sparce and poorly decorated. The restaurant was only open for breakfast on the day after the timeshare arrival days, Sunday and Monday I believe. We arrived late, due to a delay in our flight and there was no place to eat as everything shut down early. On the 2 occasions that we used the restaurant, we found the food and service to be good. The Bar and staff were nice and drinks were reasonably priced for Grand Cayman. We were there during the football play-offs and wanted to watch them on TV. The room system did not have the right network, so we went to the bar to watch. Unbeknownst to us, the TV could not have sound because it was broadcast throughout the whole restaurant. Something that I thought could be easily fixed.

The location of the Tortuga Club is another drawback, unless your goal is to simply sit most of your vacation, for there is no place within walking distance. A car is a necessity. Nearly an hour from Georgetown and a half hour from Rum Point, we felt we spent a lot of wasted vacation time driving. The parking lot for our building was rubble, with no even surface. Our small rental car had low clearance, so we were very reluctant to drive on it. Other buildings parking lots were paved. The view from a good percentage of the buildings is another building and the pool. Ocean View rooms were the ones that were wiped out by the hurricane, but the new building has them. We asked to be moved to the new building, but were told it was reserved for timeshare owners only.

All in all, I feel this property could be a lot better with some redecorating, a little money added to the ammenities, and keeping the restaurant open more often. The location cannot be changed, so if you are looking for good restaurants and something to do other than sit on a beach, look for a property in Georgetown.
