My husband and I walked the Mastic Trail with a fabulous guide, Stuart Mailer of the Cayman Island National Trust. The entire 2.3 mile walk took approximately three hours. The pace was comfortable as our guide stopped very frequently to identify various flora and fauna. Without our knowledgeable guide we would have missed so much interesting material. Our son and his wife had walked the trail without a guide and told us that he didn't think it was worth doing.
A good portion of the terrain pathway is covered with rough limestone and tree roots so someone with ankle or knee problems should not attempt the walk. However, anyone else can hike the trail. Based on previous reviewers helpful hints we wore sneakers and long pants, and brought along sunscreen, bug spray, water and granola bars. We are in our 70s and had no problem hiking the trail. We didn't need the bug spray as we had a pleasant breeze blowing while we were on the trail. The other two couples wore shorts and Teva sandals and didn't have any difficulties.
If you would like to learn about the natural history of the Mastic Trail, you cannot find a better guide. Stuart is extremely versed in the trail's history as well as its plant and animal species.
We paid $30.00 per person for the tour and felt ever penny was well spent.
