“A Slow Decline in Quality.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

My husband and I had been staying at this resort since 2005. The location gave us our much needed privacy, yet convenient enough to access the beach, grocery store, and restaurants by means of a rental car. On our recent two-week stay, I've noticed a drastic decline in maintenance and management. The staff are still consistently friendly and hard working. There were an over abundance of wild chickens living within the property leaving a mess with their droppings. The absence of hammocks were disappointing. They managed to put ONE out on our final day. Phase 2 had new furnitures, fresh paint, and beautiful decor while the other side has been forgotten. Our assigned unit was outdated complete with a slow-working clothes dryer. The bed was still comfy, but it can use a new comforter. Garbage bags were being placed outside the doors for pick up, leaving a horrid smell down the hallway and its carpet. The lack of rennovation and attention given to the older units worries me. I hope that management can restore this resort with higher quality and standard.

Room Tip: If given the choice, stay at the newer units.

“Poor to non existant management”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

The location is ideal, quiet, away from the fray of Georgetown and Seven Mile Beach. They were 'unable' to locate our pre-paid reservation until I got distinctly rude. The front line staff are fabulous, the management is atrocious. We were put in a substandard room with a water heater in the closet (no hanging space), and not enough sleeping space. We had to make do with couch cushions on the floor. The food in the restaurant was perfect. The overworked staff had great difficulty keeping up. At one point, several of us guests were helping bus the tables so the watiress could keep up. We were not the only ones with room issues, and the so-called manager was happy to sit in the back while his front line staff took the brunt of the messes.

I sing kudos to the staff! They were trying their best with an impossible situation. Heard 'on island' that the management has changed several times in a few months which begs the questiobn, "why". I hope the owner gets it together as this is really a great location with great potential.

I have contacted management to see if they will make any amends regarding accomodation provided and charges. Will post any positive results.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

We stayed in one of the old timeshare units and to say it is shabby and needs repair is an understatement. The upside is that it gave us more space than a hotel room. Three times during the night and early hours of 12/25 the fire alarm went off and woke us all up. No-one came around to let us know if there was a fire and we needed to leave the building or if it was going off for some other reason. The next day we heard that it was because of a fault with one of the tumble driers. At 1am? This property keeps changing owners - the current owners apparently have a deadline of February 2013 to complete the renovations in order to be approved to fly the company flag - I can't see that happening. It seems that this orginal only timeshare property is now more of a hotel and there are only a few timeshare units left. The staff were friendly and courteous. The jet ski owners took us on a great trip to stingray city and Rum Point. No, you cannot stay here without renting a car. We went to cemetery beach and sat under the trees when not in the water. If you want to use one of the grills at night you have to buy your own charcoal or gas for the BBQ. A lighter to light the charcoal costs $5 from the store on the property! Fortunately someone had left behind an open bag of coal as when we found out that we had to provide our own heat to cook with the supermarket was already closed. Until the renovations are completed I cannot recommend this property.

“Fabulous in many ways”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

My husband and 6 y.o. son spent Christmas week here. Also based on reviews here, I was not sure what to anticipate. There are many pluses to this "resort" complex. We stayed as part of an Interval World Travel getaway vacation. When I called ahead and when we checked in, I was told that Interval guests stay in what they call Phase I. Phase I is the unrenovated portion of the complex. Phase 2 is the renovated portion of the "hotel." We had a 1 bedroom unit that overlooked the pool and had a nice view of the ocean. The unit itself was fine, although a bit dated, and many steps below the renovated portion of the "resort," which I asked to see. The common area leading to the rooms in Phase 1 has stains and a bad odor. The suite itself was slightly above average. I am a stickler for cleanliness and tried not to focus on it's flaws, so that I could have a good week. The bed was very comfortable, and everything was in working order, except the dryer which took forever to dry clothing. Christmas Eve there was a problem with the fire alarm, and it went off several times (and awoke us) during the night. When we called the front desk we were told that someone had been cooking in their unit without turning on the exhaust vent. The AC worked very well!

The location for us was not a problem, because we rented a car. We enjoyed driving to remote areas of the island and leaving when we wanted to. When we went to Seven Mile Beach, we just drove and parked near a beach access entrance and walked on. We met new friend's there, and they spent considerable time waiting for taxi's or the Grand Caymanian shuttle service. I saw others who had to keep pushing dinner and other reservations back, b/c pick ups happened on island time. But, I digress.

The location on the water is beautiful and has a lot of potential. The water is a bit rough and the beach is not really a beach.f Our friends snorkeled there with success. But, I agree with a previous reviewer who said they seem to be working on too much at once. This results in lumber lying out in the yard, half built fences, mini-cement mixers out. The grounds staff were professional and friendly, especially Richard, who shared the plans for the resort with us when we asked what they were working on.

Getting to the resort in the dark is a challenge, despite written directions and navigation! Small signs can't be read in the dark! On our way there from the airport (our first night) we had a flat tire and the hotel driver stopped (despite having a pick up waiting) and helped my husband change it (fortunately he had a flashlight). We learned later that customers were calling for him angrily, but we never knew that, b/c he was calm and professional. Thank you! Sorry I don't know your name! Front desk, restaurant and house keeping staff (the real workers) are A++++. I certainly can't remember all of their names, but they made our stay great--especially Alicia, Andre, Jennifer and the night security woman. In the restaurant the wait-staff were spectacularly pleasant and helpful! The chef remembered (after one meal) that I don't eat dairy and cooked my fish in olive oil, instead of butter, without being asked! Thank you! The guy who manages the restaurant was not very helpful or positive, in my opinion. The food was good there.

The special nights were lots of fun. There was an enjoyable "happy hour" that coincided with Christmas. It included complimentary beer, wine and rum and non rum punch, and nibbles to eat. The description on the calendar stated live music, but the music was recorded Christmas and other music, which was fine. The Sunday morning orientation was helpful and we enjoyed much of what was promoted there, with the exception of the tour by Big Joe, which was an overly expensive disappointment. There was no kid club to speak of, despite it being advertised on the website.

Suggestion for management. Enlarge your garbage disposal area. What you are using is too small for your needs. We happened to go out when the garbage truck was picking up garbage, and it spilled all over the parking lot in a smelly, unsighly way.

Despite anything less than positive stated, we had a great time, and would return. It would be great if the entire complex of rooms was renovated, so that everyone could enjoy sparkling and new room facilities and that timeshare residents felt as valuable as everyone else!

“Worth the timeshare trade”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012

We stayed December 2012 and enjoyed our stay alot. It was difficult make the booking decision based on what i thought were pretty mixed reviews. The very short version: it is worth your vacation swap week. I think the reviews were accurate and everyone has their own personal standard. If we were in the States and I paid per night I would not be as happy. The property looks very pretty from a distance. The closer you get the minor flaws appear. Overall the property is really beautiful. However, the property is clearly in the process of renovation. In a good way. The down side is they have "too many irons in the fire" and do not appear to be compleating a small task, but rather have many "open" projects. They are doing real work and inprovements. They were pouring a low concrete wall to add a sandy beach area and making a lighted fenced area by the pier. I did not find any "open" projects dangerous or overyly unsightly. There were several walls inside the common areas of the property that were not yet closed up. On the plus side, the finished product is very good. The resturant/bar is beautiful. The food is also very good and the prices were not out of line for the island. The room was of equal quality, however, again there were finishing touches that had yet to be worked out.
Room: First we had exchaged a one bedroom with fold out couch. When we got there we were assigned a room that had recently been renovated. The furniture looked new. It was clean and fresh looking. This couch was not a fold out and it would probably only sleep a child or small adult. Our booking was one bedroom that slept four. The staff was helpful but it was a challenge to find a room that was available with a foldout. We were asigned a room that was just completed. Everything was brand new. We had to pull the plastic off the mattress on the fold out. (It was a thin mattress, caution for adults trying to sleep on it) The kitchen equiptment was right out of the box) As you would imagine it looked great. The main bed was very comfortable. There was a wiring issue regarding a switch inside the washer/dryer closet that also powered the a/c. We just left it on. The a/c worked great which is important for this climate. The room is a very nice size with an area large enough for a 6 person dining table, that was very convient. We slid it over some and still had room for a twin blow up mattress we brought for our youngest. One side of the propertry is next to an "empty" lot that has rusted railroad containers, rebarb, sheds, and construction equiptment. None the less the balcony had a great view of the water with palm trees. The lot is not owned by the Resort so there is little they can do. I thought it was no big deal. I took pictures from our balcony and was able to zoom out the equiptment if that giver you an idea.
The best thing about the property is the view of the water. Its just beautiful. The next best thing is the people. Everyone was helpful and friendly. I did find that people on the island tend to initially be reserved with their demenor and facial expressions. Meaning, that if I were a person who said very little I would be under the mistaken impression that the islanders were uninterested. But it you put any effort into any communication you will get big smiles and friendly hellos from everyone, the front desk, the maids, the maintaince men. I said hello to a fellow as i was walking out under the palm trees between the restuant and the sea and he turned out the be the owner. He was a very nice host who explained about the status of the construction and their plans. I spoke to him about the non-foldout couch. I didn't fully catch on to the ins and outs, but I gathered that certain rooms incorrectly recieved non-folding couches and that was being corrected. It made sense as the furniture was clearly brand new.
Would I recommend that you stay here? Yes. Would I stay here again? Maybe. It's the not complex thats the issue. Its the location. You HAVE to rent a car. For me thats not the big deal I like driving around and seeing everything. It's the beach. Currently, you can't really get in the water at the resort. You could, but not in the traditional beach way. (although, that is the purpose of the new construction. Albeit small, a sandy walk-in beach area) They do have jetskis, and water boats to rent. BUT, it's not on the seven mile beach side. For me, that's why we come. It's the most beautiful beach in the world. So it's a small hassle to get in the car and drive to the beach. Really, its only a few minutes 5-7, maybe. The resort is a slight pain because there is only one way in passed a golf course and there are speed bumps everywere. We drove to governors beach. I would recommend that 100%. There is a small brown sign and a parking area, two tables and a port-a-potty. That is the down side. If you want a something to eat, or drink you need to bring it. You can drive futher and stay at "public beach". It has showers, bathroom, food, ect, but its packed on cruise ship day. I mean packed. It would be possible to walk down to the Ritz or somewere for food/drink, but we brought our own. It would have been much nicer to stay at one of the condos or hotels on the beach. So that's the maybe. Next time we will probably stay on the beach so the kids can come in and out of the sun. Take short naps, eat, ect. Without children, staying at the Grand Caymanian could make a lot of sense. We can stay a week for the price of a couple of nights on the beach.

I hope this was helpful. Enjoy your stay. GO TO THE BEACH!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Verify that your room has a fold out couch if needed.
