We just returned from the 7 night Western Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Conquest out of Galveston, TX.
We've learned from experience not to book tours through the ship because they're too expensive, crowded, and they exaggerate how exciting it'll be. We did our ports on our own.
In Grand Cayman, I had pre-booked with Moby Dick Tours for Stingray City based on the good reviews I'd read on various sites, including this one. It saved us $5 per person booking through their website compared to their walk-up at the pier price. They were right there as we exited the tender. (This was a very easy tender--many boats available & a short trip to the dock) They told us to meet them across the street in 40 minutes, so we had time to shop a little & go to the restroom. Georgetown is very nice & clean & safe. A lot of high-end stores for the rich & super rich. We were loaded in a group of 30 onto a school bus & took about a 15 minute drive to the pier, where we boarded the Moby Dick. Our guides, Zack & William were very friendly & entertaining. They took us snorkeling 1st, because there were 5 ships in port that day & the sandbar was already crowded & at 9:45am. We snorkeled for about 45 minutes, which was difficult. The current kept pushing everyone back into the boat, so it was crowded. The water was a bit choppy, so my 7 yr old said "no way" & the 9 yr old only last about 10 minutes. With William's help, I did get to see a small nurse shark & a mora eel. I never thought I'd be happy to see a shark, but it seemed harmless enough, & I didn't hear the theme music to "Jaws" in the background, so I felt OK about it. There were some pretty sites, it was just a rough day for snorkeling. We made our way over to the sandbar & it was still pretty crowded, but that didn't stop our fun. Zack & William jumped in & grabbed some stingrays for us & it was amazing! I never knew they could be so friendly & affectionate. They were so cool to pet, and they curl their front up to wait for a kiss! This was an incredible experience we all thoroughly enjoyed & can't wait to do again. Zack & William are out there all day every day, so they know these friendly little creatures by name. There's spots, pizza slice, stubby, tripod, frisbee, etc...I think we spent about 45 minutes at the sandbar & then headed back to the pier. I loved that our boat was small & not crowded, which was not the case with the ship's excursion. There were about 30 of us, & the boat had a bathroom & fresh water shower. They supplied the snorkel equipment & water/fruit punch. Not a bad deal for $35 adult/$30 child. The ship was charging $69 or $79 per person. I'm not sure, but still a rip off compared to the deal we got with Moby Dick Tours. We would definitely hire Moby Dick again. They dropped us off at the port & we looked around a bit before hopping the tender back to the ship. Overall a great day & a wonderful experience!
