Were we extremely disappointed with our stay at the BEYC (thankfully we live on Tortola so hadn't traveled far to get there and were only there for 2 nights!!!!) The rooms are dingy and in need of an upgrade (unless you like 1970’s décor), the resort in general could do with some tidying up and general maintenance, the "service" is poor and the staff are completely disinterested in meeting guests need (very much a take it or leave it attitude) and, the food is very mediocre (and it is not like you have the option of numerous other restaurants on your doorstep). Some examples; we arrived at 10am and after 4 follow-up calls our daughters bed was eventually delivered at 7:30pm, when we made our reservation we specifically asked for advice on the best type and room location (given we were traveling with a 3 year old and 7 mth old) yet we were assigned a room at the furthest end of the resort and as high up the mountain as you can get, the shuttle bus is inefficient (and the drivers hazardous) and we spend a good portion of our weekend waiting for it or traipsing up the hill with 2 kids and all their gear. In addition there were mix-ups with our check-out time (having the bellman arrive for our bags at 8:30am when we advised we would only be leaving after lunch), most requests needed to be repeated multiple times, we are still waiting for the General Manager to call us in regard to our complaints, and despite the Rooms Manager promising us she would make up for our experience, we are still waiting to hear from her over a month after we checked out.
The only thing the BEYC has going for it in our eyes is its gorgeous location (the North Sound is one of our most favourite places in all of the Caribbean) and the extensive Watersports program. We have stayed at almost all of the high-end resorts in the Virgin Islands (US & BVI) and have traveled extensively in the Caribbean and if you want our opinion we would highly recommend staying at Little Dix on Virgin Gorda (beautifully appointed rooms, attentive service, awareness of children’s needs, gorgeous gardens and grounds, an absolutely stunning beach and good food) and, if you want to visit The North Sound, go by boat or charter a yacht and do it that way.

“Very nice!”

My husband and our 3 kids stayed here last Dec. '07. Like another reviewer we stayed in a beach villa and just loved it!

We had heard the food wasn't great but it wasn't really horrible the nights we ate there and was passable.

Staff was quiet but friendly and definitely approachable, seemed to get right on any issues that arose.

Will return to BEYC in future!

“Beachfront Rooms are the way to go”

Bitter End Yacht Club

Mar 21, 2008

We just arrived back from a seven night stay at Bitter End. I had been there 23yrs ago on a boat so it had been a while. This time I was there with my husband and two of my teenage children. Although I would go back there without hesitation, particularly for the beachfront villa view and hammock, I do have some concerns. The welcome is nice as they meet you at the boat with warm towels and get you settled right away! As others have commented, the food is mediocre. One suggestion is that they should utilize more of their property to serve meals. There was a second restaurant by the pool area but they did not use it once while we were there. Every meal was at the same main restaurant which was boring and the food was not great. We were on an Admirals package which allowed us to pay in advance and included all three meals and use of the entire fleet of boats. This was great because you didn't feel "nickeled and dimed" but you couldn't eat any meals in the pub at the resort and so we ate every meal in the same location. If you are looking for a nice beach don't come here. If you are looking for a lot of activities and a way to relax in a simple environment then do come to Bitter End. We met some nice people and went out a some of the excursions which were great. The waterfront staff could not have been friendlier but the restaurant staff was really not pleasant and somehow didn't get the memo about service. Our beachfront villa was old..they have renovated many of them but still so nice. We slept with doors open and felt like we were in a tree house and had a beautiful view. The only bothersome part of the beachfront villas is that the staff seem to drive there small vans along the path and make a lot of noise early in the morning. You're in this serene environment and then you hear traffic rush by right below you. If you stay in the North Sound Suites you won't have this problem but they don't have the same feel as the beachfront villas and are further away from the main part of the resort. Stay in the North Sound Suites if you have young children who want to swim in the pool as the pool is a hike from the beachfront villas. The exercise Vita Course is old and tired as much of the upkeep is at the resort. It almost seemed as if they needed an infusion of capital. The ladder down to the water on a nice deck out over the water was broken...there was a pile of broken wooden beach chairs by the beach and many other sites that made you wonder? That being said, if you want simple and a spectacular feel from your room and love to sail and take part in water sports then Bitter End is a great place to go.

“thrilled to be back!!”

Bitter End Yacht Club

New York

This was my 5th visit to the BEYC over the past 9 years, not including brief stays as a boater on a slip, and the more I see of the Virgin Islands the more I look forward to coming back here. It’s a nice combination of upscale and laid back and I noticed a number of improvements since my last visit in 2006.

Our bungalow on the hill was recently renovated-still casual but the bathroom was completely refinished with nice fixtures and tiles, as well as much improved lighting. You still have the playful feeling of being in a tree house, and the showers still feel open to the outdoors and have great views, only now you want to linger longer. This is great because if you are active you are showering at least twice a day.

The Pub has expanded with more seating and now has a pool table which is a nice feature. We played pool (pretty badly) with boaters on slips as well as other guests and it was a nice informal way to wind down the day.

Each time I have visited with small groups of friends, all with varying interests; some want to lay on a beach quietly and not see anyone for days, some want to go on daily snorkeling adventures, and others of us have a strong interest in sailing. Everybody always ends up happy. This year there seemed to be even more snorkeling trips to choose from, and the food seemed much improved; we all had very good food for seven nights in a row, most memorable was the Tuna and the Grouper as well as the steak straight from the grill.

To me the sailing opportunities here are more interesting than chartering a boat and sailing “bar to bar” in the Caribbean because you can always learn something from the staff as well as try the different boats available. I sailed their IC 24 sailboats almost daily and was sad to be leaving the day several new guests arrived and wanted to get a small group together to race these boats. We also chartered a 50-foot Beneteau with a captain one day for a private snorkeling excursion.

The interesting thing to me about the BEYC is that it’s like a small village; resort guests, boat guests, and a just a few day trippers populate the place, but its big enough that you can either feel like part of something or hole up quietly and stare at the beautiful surroundings. Like all places that call you back, I feel a kind of ownership about the resort, as if its there just for me. I think other people must feel this way as well; at the guest cocktail party on Monday night they introduced all the repeat guests; among those of us who were thrilled to be back was a couple who were there for their 23rd time, and another for their 11th.

We stayed here in 2002, we being at the time my wife and I and 3 daughters under 12 years old.

My kids have spent every summer on the water, and they thoroughly enjoyed BER. There was so much for them to do: snorkeling, sailing, sailing lessons, swimming, boat trips, the pool, movies in the evening, and apparently, judging by the bar bill, they had about 100 virgin pina coladas apiece.

We are very protective of our girls, but this was the first place we have stayed where we felt perfectly comfortable letting them out of our sight. They met a lot of other nice kids.

We stayed on the waterfront on both sides of one of the nice little cottages. Had a beautiful view of the mooring, Necker Island, and the funky bar in the cut.

Two things: unless it has dramatically improved, the food was notable only for its mediocrity. It's such a nice place that it was confusing that the food was so below average. If you are passing thru on a sailboat and eat here one night, be prepared to be both disappointed with the food and shocked by the bill.

The other thing: your bar bill will be big.

Apparently, prices have gone way way up. As I recall, the price for a week in two rooms for five in 2002 was about $US10k. I called in 2007 to rent the same two rooms and was told the price was $US20k. I thought I misheard her, and asked her to repeat it, and sure enough, $20k. For $12k we chartered a nice sailboat for 8 nights with captain and cook, and went to a lot of great places. Can't see us staying in BER as a family again due to the price, but maybe my wife and I will go back when the children are grown and gone.
