We just returned from a Virgin Islands tour (Jan 15 - Feb 1, we go every year to visit family in St. Thomas) and discovered Virgin Gorda.
We are well-heeled travelers and did a fair amount of research on the right spot. To be honest, we could have afforded to stay at Little Dix Bay, but I wanted to stay away from that type of demanding guest and get more local flavor. We made the right decision! Guavaberry, at first blush, seems overly rustic and whithered, but it is run so well by Tina and Valerie, your stay is made special. They arranged rental car delivery, were totally familiar with the island's restaurants. They were down to earth and very hospitable. Love the comissary with a range of wines and cheeses on the honor system. The cottages themselves are totally basic. We were in Plum Tree with a great view of sunsets. My one real complaint was the quality of the matress in the bedroom. It needs to be upgraded. When you book, make sure you ask for a good bed.
Restaurants which we were directed to and loved were: Breakfast - Fischer's Cove (5 minute drive), "Splurge" Lunch - Giorgio's in Savannah Bay, Dinner - The Rock Cafe, Chez Bamboo. Be aware that all food in Virgin Gorda is 50% more expensive than normal US prices. Our decision to stay at Guavaberry was confirmed by how rude the employees at the front desk of Little Dix Bay when we went over for a lunch.
Little Dix doesn't deliver the way their sister resort - Caneel does.
That's the plain truth. I wish any future travelers to Virgin Gorda a great time. It's a magical place.
