We have just returned from a week at Fischer's Cove on beautiful Virgin Gorda. We found the hotel exactly as advertised and a real delight. The property was clean, charming, close to everything in the valley (south side of the island), and the staff was warm, friendly and helpful. As with most medium priced properties, I'm always a little skeptical about what we'll find once we get to our destination. I can say with confidence that Fischer's Cove met and exceeded our expectations. Understand, it's not the Ritz Carlton (or not Little Dix if your familiar with Virgin Gorda), but what we found was a small, clean, affordable, charming property that I would stay at again without hesitation.
The rooms were average sized with a nice ocean view. The breeze was fantastic and we never even thought about A/C. The main building with the office, restaurant and bar was right on the beach and was a fun central location for hotel functions and just meeting the other guests. The hotel restaurant was outstanding and the Wednesday evening buffet was a ton of fun.
We rented a car for the week and toured the entire island. I didn't see any other place that made me think "I sure wish I was staying here instead".
As for activities, we hit most of the beaches and tried a bunch of restaurants. Our favorite beaches were Spring Bay, Devils Bay and Savannah Bay. The snorkeling at Spring Bay was incredible. We took a day-trip to Anegada and the beach (beaches actually) on the north side of the island are stunning. We went to the famous Baths and while it was great, this is where we encountered the biggest crowds. My suggestion - do Spring Bay or Devils Bay instead. You see the same thing and the crowds are lighter. The day-trip to Anegada was so-so. We took a powerboat from The Bitter End and we felt a little rushed throughout the entire episode. If I were to do it over again, I'd charter out of the Yacht Harbor in Spanish Town or via the Dive BVI shop which is also right at the Yacht Harbor in town.
As for restaurants, our overall experience was great. Dining out in Virgin Gorda is not for the "value minded" individual. You can find good deals if you look, but expect to budget plenty in this area. Most of our evenings out were in the Valley (south) and we really enjoyed the restaurant at Fischer's Cove (be sure and say Hi to Noel), The Rock Cafe, Top of the Baths, The Bath and Turtle, and a spectacular meal at Giorgio's Table (this meal was a trip highlight - but beware, $$$$). We didn't eat at Chez Bamboo (it was recommended) but we stopped by and the menu and facility there looked fantastic also. The only bad meal experience we had was at the Mine Shaft. The food was below average and seemed overpriced when compared to the other restaurants we visited. Additionally, there was something in my water glass that I never was able to identify. I'd describe it, but I'm really trying to forget the whole event. I think a good best practice would be to always order bottled water.
Bottom line - Fischer's Cove was great, Virgin Gorda in general was spectacular, and for a family of four with two teenagers, the destination was as close to perfect as I can imagine. The island is safe, easy to get to, and ton's to do.
Please feel free to contact me if I can provide any additional details or specifics.
