I stayed at Fischers last March for a week. I found it to be a very good value considering the prices of the other accomodations. Reading these reviews gave me a chuckle. What can one expect for one of the least expensive properties on Virgin Gorda? Other properties are much more expensive. When I was looking for a place to stay I was afraid it would be impossible to find something reasonable. Most other accomodations were at least twice as much per night and most were much more. The hotel is basically clean, the staff is great and the beach is nice and quiet. I loved watching the sunset from the huge veranda. It was a short walk to town and most of the time very quiet. I am planning on staying there again in January. I also spent a night at Leverik Bay and it was more money, the staff was extremely rude, the sheets on the bed were dirty, and it didn't have a beach. It made Fishcers look even better!

Stayed here for a week in January with my girlfriend. Room (queen bed, a/c, lower floor) was ok for the price ($720 for the week). The grounds are nice, the location is central to many attractions, and the staff is super nice. However there is some standing water from the bay next to hotel and I fear it is a mosquito utopia. We were eaten alive the first night so I had to spray down the room and windows and seal up all the cracks in the screens and spaces under the doors that allowed them in. The beach is small and not nearly as nice as the others on the island which are only minutes away so we never really hung out there (had a jeep rental). The restaurant's food didn't rank highly compared to all the other options nearby either. All considered I would look for another option if I returned to the island. We chose it for the beachfont location but in retrospect the island is so small that staying "inland" with a rented jeep is really the way to go.

Note: There is a gecko that lived in our room ("Frangipani"). You can chase him all you want but he will NOT run out the open doors and he is much much faster than you. He hangs out under the fridge and sleeps on the windowsill. He is cute and harmless though, didn't even try and sell me car insurance.

We opted for upstairs for the view, which was very nice. But upstairs has no A/C, just ceiling fans. Although not oppressive, it was warm enough to make it a little difficult to sleep. Also, the screens have holes so the mosquitos ate us alive despite the Off! we used constantly. Since we weren't in the room enough to enjoy the view, if we stayed again we would definitely opt for the downstairs with A/C. The room decor was very cute. If they cared for the rooms as well as the grounds, they could be very nice. But as it was they were just OK. Not extremely clean and the maid service was very unpredictable and basically just made the bed and gave new towels when they did show up. Ants were definitely an irritation. The grounds are kept up very nice. The restaurant is good with an excellent view. The common rec room was great--beautiful view, rocking chairs, books, games, VCR/DVD, kids movies. Beach was nice. Employees were nice, especially Loretta who was so helpful. Since this place is close to town you can hear some traffic and other noise which my husband did not like at all, but I liked the central location as it is close to everything. If they would just do a better cleaning and care for the rooms themselves, it could be A1.

First off you need to understand that Virgin Gorda is a simple, laid back island. It doesn't have any fancy 5 star resorts or large condo complexes. It is simple and basic. That being said, Fischer's Cove is very simple and very basic. We stayed in a beach front studio cottage. It was truly 10 steps to a very nice beach. The cottage was very, very basic. Somewhat outdated but clean. It had a nice bed, small kitchenette and a small bathroom with shower stall. There was nothing fancy about it. But it was located so centrally to everything. Some of the nicest restaurants, the Bath's and other very beautiful beaches. We felt lucky to have stayed there even after seeing other places on the island. The location and price were great. The resort has a nice porch/lobby area with rocking chairs to sit and relax the afternoon away, or you can lounge away on a hammock or under a tiki hut on the beach. The has only one other couple on it some of the days we were there. Most days it was empty! The restaurant serves delicious dinners (I had the mango chicken). The bar is great and looks right out to the beautiful water of Sir Drake Channel. The Flaux family has owned the place for 35 yeas and have made it what it is today. Norma is usually enjoying an afternoon cocktail at the bar and is a delight to talk too. She will share so much rich history of the island and the growth of Fischer's cove. I would stay there again.....althought I would probably go for the air conditioned hotel room. I missed not having air conditioning. The breezes were great but I wasn't use to the sound of the waves and palm trees so I found it difficult to sleep. Also even though the room had screens and louvers we still had mosquitos munching on us while we slept.
Things that are a must do on the island:
Rent a car so you can freely get around and see the place
The Bath's
Devils Bay Beach
Snorkel Spring Bay Beach
Climb over to Trunk Bay for total beach islolation
Visit Savannah Bay Beach
Drive down to Leverick Bay (just the ride alone is amazing)
Drive to Gun Creek and catch the ferry to Bitter End Yacht Club walk around and enjoy the views.
Catch the ferry to Saba Rock and enjoy some snorkeling
Do a the Norman Island trip with Double D charts (cost $95) does 4 snorkel stops visits the Willy T restaurant (food on your own).
Take the Express Ferry to Anegada ($55 round trip) (goes out only on Wednesdays) and enjoy a lobster lunch at Big Bamboo ($30 per lobster) then snorkel on Loblolly beach
Restaurants Worth the Trip:
Fischer's Cove for the mango chicken
Mine Shaft for the Tuesday night BBQ All you can eat buffet ($24.00pp) (mango BBQ sauce was awesome)
Rock Cafe for their awesome Alla Rock Pasta dish
Top of the Bath's for lunch with great views
Bath & Turtle for a casual meal and some great drinks made by Marcus at the bar.
Leverick Bay Beach BBQ Buffet ($25 pp) on Friday night and see the Mocko Jumbies perform.
Mad Dogs a small bar at the bath next to the Top of the Bath's restaurants. Enjoy a cool breeze, beautiful views, great Pina Coladas or a Carib and just hang and relax with Edith.

Places I didn't feel were worth the dining expense:
The Pavillion food was overpriced, resort is a bit stuffy and formal.
Giorgio's Table food was overpriced for the quantity you received. Menu is limited with Italian food choices that were unfamiliar to me.

We would also have liked to have rented a Dinghy and tour Prickly Pear Island, Saba Rock and Mosquito Island but we tried on two seperate occassions to rent one from Leverick Bay Watersports and both times were rudy told there were "no dingys" even though the same 3 sat at the beaches edge for the entire week. I am not sure what the issue was but it appeared our $85.00 for a day rental wasn't needed there?! It was a shame because we would have spent money there and then also on the neighboring islands we visited! Oh well, maybe next time we will rent one from Bitter End instead.

Words of advice: go with the anticipation of laid back relaxation!
Bring Bug Spray because the mosquitos love to bite!

We have just returned from a week at Fischer's Cove on beautiful Virgin Gorda. We found the hotel exactly as advertised and a real delight. The property was clean, charming, close to everything in the valley (south side of the island), and the staff was warm, friendly and helpful. As with most medium priced properties, I'm always a little skeptical about what we'll find once we get to our destination. I can say with confidence that Fischer's Cove met and exceeded our expectations. Understand, it's not the Ritz Carlton (or not Little Dix if your familiar with Virgin Gorda), but what we found was a small, clean, affordable, charming property that I would stay at again without hesitation.

The rooms were average sized with a nice ocean view. The breeze was fantastic and we never even thought about A/C. The main building with the office, restaurant and bar was right on the beach and was a fun central location for hotel functions and just meeting the other guests. The hotel restaurant was outstanding and the Wednesday evening buffet was a ton of fun.

We rented a car for the week and toured the entire island. I didn't see any other place that made me think "I sure wish I was staying here instead".

As for activities, we hit most of the beaches and tried a bunch of restaurants. Our favorite beaches were Spring Bay, Devils Bay and Savannah Bay. The snorkeling at Spring Bay was incredible. We took a day-trip to Anegada and the beach (beaches actually) on the north side of the island are stunning. We went to the famous Baths and while it was great, this is where we encountered the biggest crowds. My suggestion - do Spring Bay or Devils Bay instead. You see the same thing and the crowds are lighter. The day-trip to Anegada was so-so. We took a powerboat from The Bitter End and we felt a little rushed throughout the entire episode. If I were to do it over again, I'd charter out of the Yacht Harbor in Spanish Town or via the Dive BVI shop which is also right at the Yacht Harbor in town.

As for restaurants, our overall experience was great. Dining out in Virgin Gorda is not for the "value minded" individual. You can find good deals if you look, but expect to budget plenty in this area. Most of our evenings out were in the Valley (south) and we really enjoyed the restaurant at Fischer's Cove (be sure and say Hi to Noel), The Rock Cafe, Top of the Baths, The Bath and Turtle, and a spectacular meal at Giorgio's Table (this meal was a trip highlight - but beware, $$$$). We didn't eat at Chez Bamboo (it was recommended) but we stopped by and the menu and facility there looked fantastic also. The only bad meal experience we had was at the Mine Shaft. The food was below average and seemed overpriced when compared to the other restaurants we visited. Additionally, there was something in my water glass that I never was able to identify. I'd describe it, but I'm really trying to forget the whole event. I think a good best practice would be to always order bottled water.

Bottom line - Fischer's Cove was great, Virgin Gorda in general was spectacular, and for a family of four with two teenagers, the destination was as close to perfect as I can imagine. The island is safe, easy to get to, and ton's to do.

Please feel free to contact me if I can provide any additional details or specifics.

Cheers,
Randy
