Let me start by saying that this is the first time we have ever been to a resort like Biras--very rustic, a lot of self service, with full service often-gourmet meals.
A few things it took us (me) a couple of days to get used to (and we did get used to it):
-No beach concierge. Fresh towels are available—set and strip your own chairs;
-No food service at the beach (not that you are ever hungry with the enormous meals that are served) with limited cocktail service (don’t know if this is always the case, i.e during peak season);
-No official room service (but you can go and get "bkft to go" from the restaurant);
-All dirt roads (ladies, leave all of your heels at home as you will have to bike or walk to dinner—although they will pick you up by golf cart if you request);
-The UMichigan undergrads who function as the General Assts on the resort---interesting to have such a young (and inexperienced) "concierge" staff at a Relais&Chateaux resort.
What we loved:
-Very secluded and private. We were there at 40% capacity—at times we felt as though the island was ours (to share with our favorite Iguana);
-Rik, the general manager, is a gem. If it can be done, he will find a way to get it done. He is a one-man show and the best thing that could happen to Biras;
-Food is generally very good; Lennox makes excellent cocktails;
-The included activities are wonderful—the complimentary snorkeling excursions with Shawn, the ferry to and from Gun Creek;
-Eating at Fat Virgins (if you can find room in your tummy)---wonderful.
What I disliked:
-The plastic hangers in the closets;
-The wind! Unlike the review from February, there was no lovely “breeze” in March, making it very unpleasant to go out to the tiny, sea-kelp filled beach (stick to the outer beaches on neighboring islands that you can get to by Boston Whaler, or the beautiful beaches on the main part of Virgin Gorda--Savanah Bay, Devils Bay. It must be the location of Biras that made the Atlantic side so unbearably windy);
-The rooms are adequate but I do agree with a prior review that an alternative to the outdoor shower would be nice (for those of you who have been to Cap Juluca, now THAT was a bathroom!).
-$20 extra dollars per chef’s special, extra for bottled spring water (For a “luxury” resort, I find this ridiculous).
My overall impression:
I wanted to love it; I really liked it. The price (and the General Manager) is 5 star; the entire experience was 4 stars. I think Little Dix Bay may have been more our style, but we chose Biras for the privacy and the quiet. And for that, it was worth it.
