“Welcome to Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2011

During our stay in the BVI we stayed in a private house on Tortola. However, we wanted to get to know at least one of the fantastic resorts on the islands so we booked ourselves on night in the Little Dix Bay Resort on Virgin Gorda. What a great decision. This place is magic!

Founded by Rockefeller in the 1960s this hotel brought tourism to the British Virgin Islands. The Queen spent some time here when she visited the BVI aboard the Britannica. So it's no surprise that Little Dix is rather expensive. Luckily we got a great deal. If you aren't on a budget you should at least spend a night here though. It's worth every cent spent!

We were welcomed by a driver at the ferry with scented cool towels and ice cold water. He welcomed us with the words "Welcome to Paradise". At the reception we met another driver who brought us to our room in one of the golf cars that provide transportation in the large resort. He welcomed us with a friendly "Welcome Home". All staff member were incredibly friendly and make you feel like a queen yourself.

The resort is located at a half a mile crescent white beach. The sea is turquoise and calm and perfect for spending some lazy time in the water. I especially liked the floats that are available at the beach. You can just lie down on them and float along the water. Wonderful. You can also take your snorkelling gear (which you can rent for free at the watersports desk btw) and lie down on a float and snorkel the lazy way. Soooo relaxing!

The resort is located in a huge garden which is as clean and organised as you can imagine. Seems like Little Dix employs the best gardeners on the islands! There is a fantastic hilltop spa with a panorama yoga plateau and a small but lovely infinity pool and you can book watersports activities, boat trips and picnics in the resort. There also is a free boat shuttle service to Devil's Bay/The Baths and free snorkelling gear rental.

We stayed for our honeymoon the last week of October 2011 and everything was perfect! My wife and I both work in the customer service business so our expectations are high and I have to say the staff at Little Dix exceeded our expectations. The resort is fantastically beautiful and a very relaxing place to stay. I've travelled the Carribean and this is one of the best beaches I've ever stayed on. If you can, spring the extra for a beachfront suite in the 50s (we stayed in 57 and loved it). Snorkeling is great and the beach drops on a deserted beach for lunch and tiki torch beach dinner are awesome touches for a romantic getaway. Be prepared for the food prices at the restaurants, not outrageous, but not cheap either. There isn't a lot to do on Virgin Gorda, but if you're looking for an easy going place with extremely friendly people this island and LDB are a great choice.

Room Tip: The beachfront suites in the 50s have great access to the beach and if you leave the sliding glass d...

my wife and I stayed at Little Dix Bay from 19-28 August. The hotel is located in the most exclusive spot of the island, a beach of white sand framed by palm trees and bathed in a sea landscape in which you can swim with small sharks and turtles. The service is excellent, but special attention is paid to the kitchen and the creations of great chefs. The spa, nestled in a corner of the jungle to the sea reserves exclusive treatments. The fitness area is very organized. Every day is guaranteed a service charter for exclusive beaches where only able to stay all day. If I had to imagine heaven ........ I wish it were so!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2011

My husband and I just returned from a fantastic 11 day stay at Little Dix Bay Resort. We spent alot of time carefully researching our options, before choosing Little Dix, and we were not disappointed. We’ve been on various tropical vacations in the past and stayed at resorts in the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and the Mexican Riviera. We’ve also done a Hawaiian Island cruise. Nothing in our previous travels compared to our experience at this resort.

Resort:
The resort itself is smaller and more intimate than any we’d previously stayed at and one of the first things we noticed, and enjoyed immensely throughout our stay, is the quiet. There is no music playing at the beach or the pools, and no televisions in the rooms (which we loved!). It is completely serene. You hear the sound of the ocean, the birds, and the wind. Even the guests tend to be on the quiet side, which was a lovely change from our experience at other resorts. The buildings themselves are built with natural, local stone and wood and blend nicely into the property.

Grounds:
The resort grounds are absolutely beautiful, resplendent with foliage. There are little lizards that hide in the undergrowth – you can often hear them scurrying when you walk by. There are also various birds: pelicans hunting in the bay, beautiful iridescent hummingbirds that frequent the flowering bushes throughout the day, and many other birds I couldn’t identify. A few times we saw larger lizards (skinks?) and even a few snakes. Depending on what room you are in, it can be a longer walk to get to places like the restaurants or the spa. There are golf carts that will transport you to anywhere on the resort. You can either call to have one pick you up or hop on one that is driving by. My husband and I walked most of the time, as it is a lovely stroll to anywhere and we preferred getting the exercise and enjoying the grounds. It was during our walks that we would spot the wildlife that we so enjoyed.

Facilities:
There are several tennis courts (which we did not make use of) and a well-equipped gym (which we did make use of). There is also a main pool that always seemed deserted, and a beautiful infinity pool at the spa. There are 3 restaurants. Only one was open at any given time during the time that we were there due probably to the fact there was very low occupancy in the off-season.

Room:
Because we were on this trip to celebrate my husband’s birthday, we received an upgrade to an ocean cottage where our room was on the 2nd level. It was a gorgeous room decorated with stone and wood and marble. Very simple and understated – it was lovely! There was a Bose CD player in the room with a complimentary CD from the Spa, which we listened to over and over, it was so relaxing. The deck had a table with a couple of chairs and a double-lounger that we would relax in with drinks in hand before heading out to dinner. The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve slept in, with the most fluffy, luxurious pillows that ensured I always got a great night’s sleep. There is bottled water provided in the room’s mini-fridge, plus some initial complimentary pop. We picked up additional beverages at the grocery store in Spanish Town and kept these in the fridge during our stay.

Housekeeping service was excellent, with a cleaning early in the day and a turndown service every evening. Plus ice is delivered to the room several times in the day. The rooms are not locked, so you don’t have to carry a key. There is a safe for valuables, and when you’re in the room there is a deadbolt option for your comfort.

Resort Beach:
The beach was lovely, with lots of extra comfortable loungers and ample shade options. We never saw the towel game being played. Even on those days we got to the beach much later due to morning activities, we never had any problem finding a lounger and shade. The snorkelling off the beach is the best I have seen right off the beach of any resort I’ve stayed at. When facing the water, head to the very far right of the beach and start snorkelling in the shallows by the rocks. Then head out to the reef towards the breakwater and just follow it to the left. You will see lots of different fish. The turtles tend to hang out where the sea-grass is closer to either side of the dock. We saw several turtles as well as some big barracuda in the grassy area.

Beach Drops:
Do take advantage of the complimentary beach drops – these are a fantastic way to experience other areas of the BVI. We did a beach drop to Mountain Trunk Bay where there is a great reef (when facing the water from the beach, swim left past the rocks). We saw a myriad of fish, plus a small black-tipped reef shark here. We also did a beach drop to Spring Bay, where there are huge boulders dotting the water. The snorkelling here was great too (we went to the right past the big boulders). We were provided with an umbrella for shade, plus ordered a picnic lunch from the resort to take with us that was packed with so much food we couldn’t even finish it all.

Food:
As other reviews have commented, the food at the resort is pricey and an automatic 18% gratuity is added onto your bill. However, I must say that the food we had on the resort was very good. We especially enjoyed the lunches at the Beach Grill with the pizzas and salads and burgers. Also, since we normally are very good tippers, we didn’t mind the 18% tip; the food service was excellent every time and the tips well-deserved.

Breakfast was included in our package and was a great spread with the option to go to the extensive buffet plus order off an a-la-carte menu. We had many dinners at the resort, and these also were excellent.

We ate dinner off the resort at the Rock Cafe and the Mine Shaft, and enjoyed both very much. The Mine Shaft has an extensive menu, a fantastic view with great sunsets, and some very unique wildlife – you’ll have to go to see what I mean.

Spa:
We did a couples massage at the spa one day. The spa location is gorgeous, overlooking the ocean high atop a cliff. The change rooms were lovely and well appointed and the massages were lovely. We made sure to go to the spa well before our scheduled service so we could spend time in the infinity pool and relaxing in the spa area.

Excursions:
One day we hiked from the resort to Savannah Bay. It is about 45 minutes each way, and you must have sturdy walking shoes as the trail is pretty rough at times. There are some great view points along the trail, so bring your camera. We also hiked from the resort up Cow Hill Trail one day. This was a quick hike – about 20 minutes – but straight up! You will be rewarded with a vantage point of the entire southern tip of the island from the top.

We also took a taxi to the Baths one day. This is a must-do! It is a national park, so there is a 3$ entry fee per person. The giant boulders are quite awesome, and there is a trail of sorts you can “hike” through to get to Devil’s bay. Because you’ll be wading through pools, just wear a bathing suit but bring water shoes as some of the rocks can be slippery and some of the sand has shell in it. I got a small cut on my foot from going it barefoot. After we hiked through the Baths, we snorkelled. It was good snorkelling, although there weren’t as many fish as we’d seen in our other snorkelling adventures. This may be because alot of catamarans and sailboats moor just offshore from the baths, and lots of people trek through. I suggest going fairly early in the day, as it got quite busy by about noon. There are a few shops and a restaurant with a great view at the trailhead to the Baths. We had a nice lunch at the restaurant, and enjoyed fantastic views from their outdoor deck.

Our most special excursion was on my husband’s birthday. As a surprise, I had chartered a sailboat for the day through Little Dix Bay. We had a fantastic day sailing with Captain Bob on the Bravura, a great snorkelling stop at Cooper’s Island, and a delicious on-board lunch, and of course the beautiful scenery of sailing through the BVI. Would highly recommend doing this for a special and unique experience, sailing through the beautiful islands. Bob and his boat were a real treat.

Service:
I cannot say enough about the service and the staff at this resort. Every single person we met who worked there was friendly and welcoming. We’ve never stayed anywhere where we felt so genuinely welcomed and appreciated. From housekeeping to the restaurant staff to security, everyone was fantastic and made our stay that much more special.

Overall:
We had a great trip and will definitely go back. Yes, it was more expensive than other tropical resorts we have stayed at, but it was worth every penny for such a relaxing, serene, friendly, welcoming, beautiful environment. If you are looking for a place to party, drink excessively and have a lively nightlife, this is not the spot for you. But if you are looking for a relaxing and special place, save your money and come here. It is worth it.

We stayed at two resorts in the BVI's for our 8 day honeymoon. 3 nights at Peter Island and 5 nights at LDB. While both places were amazing in their own right. LDB was our favorite. Peter Island, had a more refined/ manicured resort feel, and is an off the charts beautiful property but the people at LBD make it the one we will come back to.

LBD is also beautiful, but a bit more rustically beautiful. You can tell the resort has been there since the 60's but it manages to feel old while still maintaining a fresh appearance.

The people both at the resort and on Virgin Gorda in general made the trip unforgettable. We went off property a few times for dinner and ever person we encountered was genuinely over the top friendly to us. That is not something you often are able to find in resort communities where there is sometimes a sense of resentment to tourists or you might feel like someone is trying to take advantage of you. It seemed like everyone at LDB had worked there at least 10 years, and you can tell that they treat their employees well.

We stayed in room number 6 which was one of the "tree house" rooms. I think rooms 5 and 6 are the only ones that have recently been remodeled to include a very cool outdoor shower. The rooms were very clean and the bathrooms were fresh. The is still an indoor shower you can use if you want to, but we usually used the outdoor one. We were very happy with the food, we did purchase a package which included breakfast. I was glad because the buffet was $30 a day. Lunches and dinners were great, we also walked into Spanish Bay one afternoon to get some snacks and lunch items to keep in the room, so that helped save some money. We usually spent that money on a nice bottle of wine at dinner.

We were there in early October, so we were a bit concerned about running into a hurricane, but the weather was picture perfect every day. I am not sure if it was because we were there in low season, but we definitely were treated like VIP's from everyone on the property. It was crazy to be one of four people who were at the Baths the day we went. If we went during high season I do not think it would be the same.

Room Tip: The tree house rooms are great. Recommend 5 or 6, close the the restaurants and the beach

Everything from the moment you arrive is absolutely beautiful. The staff couldn't be more helpful and attentive. The beach the snorkeling are right up there with the best places in the Caribbean I've experienced. As much or as little as you want to do on a beach vacation. Complimentary beach drops around the island including The Baths which are a must see!! We went three times. This trip was the first time I've said I want to go back. With all the places to see in the world staying in one place would be too hard, until I stayed at Little Dix. You can't ask for any more out of a vacation. Great food, perfect beaches, island hopping, hiking, and seeing breathe taking sea l

Overall it was a great place. I loved that you could snorkel from the beach and the spa was so pretty. I really enjoyed everything...the food was just okay...but everything else made up for it.

* Be sure to take a hike on on of their trails
* Don't expect turn down service....they sometimes forget and want you to leave your door open to get it.
* Some rooms offer a golf cart to use for your stay...so fun!
* Sea turtles come so close you can snorkel with them!
* Some rooms have private pools and they even offer a DVD & game library.

Overall a really nice place and if you love tennis you will be in your glory!

Room Tip: Get a room with a GOLF CART! SO Fun and SO Private.
