“Great Stay, Average food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

A beautiful location and a magnificently restored monastery with sensational views over the surrounding valleys. Walking through the grounds of the resort was a real pleasure. Our room was very comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The one hour salt spa treatment is a "must do" and is both relaxing and invigorating. However, what should have been a perfect stay was marred by a disappointing meal in what was described as a one hat Michelin Restaurant. Maybe this Monday evening was a bad night but the food was sub-standard for a top quality restaurant. Although presented well, the food lacked flavour and finesse. Starters were cold and soggy as if refrigerated overnight, and the mains were characterless. However dessert was good. The saving grace for the night was a magnificent bottle of 2007 Gaja that was a triumph of Barbaresco wine magic!

An old monastery painstakingly restored to be a luxury hotel, I think Relais San Maurizio is one-of-a-kind. Situated on top a high hill, with commanding views over the surrounding PIemonte countryside, it's perfect for relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere. Hidden under the old building is a modern spa that is design you will remember & enjoy – contrasting but not clashing. The breakfast is definitely top (and nicely not overpriced), and overall the staff really seem to care for the hotel & your wellbeing, happy to note it's also in no way snobbish. All the details are in place, and the monastery gardens put icing on the cake: it's amazing to take a stroll through them in the morning or at night after a great dinner at Guido's downstairs in the cellars. Very highly recommended.

Room Tip: We had a superior room which was very spacious.

I had the pleasure to stay last week 3 nights at this beautiful hotel. It was cold and the weather was not that good but this property is still great even in winter time. When you want to have a very good health spa with a perfect service then in special this time of the year is very good to go away from the hassle of your daily work.

This 17th century monastery with its 30 rooms and the romantic garden is a quiet oasis from the big cities of Turin and Milan which are not so far away. To Turin you have a 40 minutes drive while Milan is only an hour away. I could imagine how lovely this location will be when its a warm and sunny day in the summer. I got the information that even in hot mid summer times the temperature will not be higher then 28/29 degrees because if its specific hillside location.

Stunning views to the surrounding vineyards (nearly 360degrees) are breathtaking. The hotel rooms are comfortable and offer all amenities you need. They keep the structure of the historic building, showing frescoes, wood and furniture. The hotel just build some 6 new suites which will have greater space and modern high quality comfort, they should be ready for the summer season.

In the great cellar facilities you can enjoy superb meals composed by the Michelin-starred Chef Andrea Alciati. You can chose between 2.500 wines which the wine cellar has to offer.

The Beauty Spa "La Via del Sale" is a great experience. Beside the heated indoor pool with jacuzzi they offer a hammam (steam bath), a gym, and the salt cave with two salt water pools as well as two (Kneipp) water-treading basin. The combination of the highly mineralized water of the San Maurizio monks and the salt arriving from the Cagliari saltworks in Sardinia has produced highly saline water able to eliminate toxins and ensure lymphodrainage. The Grotta del Sale offers an exclusive regenerating, health circuit.

I can say that this works perfect for me and I rate this 5 star!

A great weekend break. Extremely friendly and competent staff - no snobbiness here. An elegant atmosphere with charm and grace. Yes, it is pricey for an extended stay, but we enjoyed the weekend. Attention to detail (they brushed the snow off our car in the morning) in everything they undertake. Incredible views - the hotel is perched on the top of a hill, with mesmerising views all around. The building itself is old, but well maintained and emanates a warm engaging atmosphere. A great restaurant is linked to the Hotel - a must. Save up and spoil your self!

Room Tip: Try and get a room at the front of the hotel

I passed a long weekend at the Relais San Maurizio.

The place is just amazing and the service too! Rooms are small (originally monks cells) but comfortable, there are 2 restaurants: one is the famous "Guido" where the atmosphere and food are top quality (but is overpriced) and the second one is the "bistro", unfortunately open only for lunch, definitely my favorite because offers local quality food superbly cooked and served (this means as should be cooked, without any kind of Nouvelle Cuisine bull*hit) and priced correctly. Actually I found the bistro better also than other famous local restaurants in the Langhe region.

The Wellness is also very clean and relaxing, I enjoyed a lot "la via del sale" a special treatment based on salted water, original and effective! Just remember that kids under 16 years old could not get inside! So if you have children forget the SPA or take a babysitter and enjoy it with your companion.

I recommend this place for wealthy readers! :-)

We spent a lovely week-end at the Relais. Usually, Relais Chateaux can get very stiffy and boring. San Maurizio is a well spared out old monastery, set in a very beautiful part of Piedmont country side. With autumn colours glowing in the sunshine and truffle season hits it best, the place is gorgeous. Even if the hotel is full, you don't run often into other customers and it gives you a sense of freedom. The service is charming. The restaurant in the basement is amazing. The spa is also quite beautiful despite average massages. Overall experience was great and I would love to come back summer time.

The relais, belonging to Relais Chateau network , stands in line with its standarts.
On a hill overlooking beautiful countryside
is this spa hotel.
The room was big and we had a view of the valley.
The breakfast is like a dream and very very
rich.
The spa is modern and rich with facilities
including pool and jacuzzi.
Guido resturant is modern with very effective service.
As I wrote in the title - very expensive but
worth every penny.
