“Great views, but ...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2010

Great location and great views, great decor ... but for a new hotel too many things do not work: our freezer did not make ice and the bar usually did not have any ice (the bar for some reason was not staffed); our blinds did not work; we ran out of hot water regularily. The small beach is man made and there were way too many sea urchins for it to be comfortable.
Ashleigh was great help, but I would not recommend this resort for its price.

My husband and I knew exactly what we we looking for, a small place removed from the maddening crowds of a big resort, but with all the amenities. After several days of searching, we found the perfect place to stay - this private hotel is everything the website shows you and more! Impeccible views, immaculate rooms, we had the beach to ourselves for 2 days, and swam in the pool daily and had it all to ourselves.

With just a few villas, you truly feel you have the place to yourself. A bountiful breakfast of fresh fruit, breads and beverages is served each morning. People come and go at their leisure, you are extremely relaxed and taken into the serenity of the beautiful flowers, water and grounds.

Several people mentioned the small reef off our beach had the best snorkeling they had ever seen. We loved that we could walk into town and to the Ferry Boat for a quick day trip, and hurry back to our private hide away. Don't miss the Mexican Dinner served on Wednesday or Friday night, a 3 course delight including dessert.

My husband & I traveled with my sister & her husband to Tortola for 10 days in February. We spent a lot of time researching places to go & where to stay before deciding on Frenchmans in Tortola based on the excellent reviews on Tripadvisor. They weren't wrong!
Michelle was very good at answering the many questions I had by email before we arrived. She arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the airport as we weren't sure how many days we wanted to rent a car for. We only rented one for a few days but next time I would rent it for a week as there are many places to see on the island.
We stayed in the Lime cottage which is two bedrooms. One bedroom is up a few stairs & the other down a few stairs, each with a balcony & bathroom. The beds were very comfortable. It was perfect for two couples as had our privacy but had our lovely living room with balcony & kitchen to spend time together. The cottages are very nicely decorated & very clean. They are set on beautiful grounds on a hill with lots of plants, trees & flowers. I'm sure all of the cottages have the same fantastic view of the hills & ocean that we did. The kitchen was fully equipped so we walked to the market in Sopers Hole for groceries which is only a 10 minute walk.
Every morning a breakfast of fresh fruit, pastry, yogurt & cereal is provided in the restaurant. Some mornings we brought a plate back to our cottage to have breakfast in our kitchen. The restaurant served a Mexican dinner on Wednesday & Friday night which we went to on Wednesday. The meal was delicious & the service was excellent. Frenchmans only has 5 cottages that are currently available for short term rentals so I'm sure having the restaurant open more nights would not make sense. There are other restaurants that are near, one in Sopers Hole that was okay & then the Jolly Roger which is a little farther away but still walking distance. We went there several times & were never disappointed with our meal. There are other restaurants that you would need a car to get to or taxi but we found the taxis to be quite expensive compared to the price of a car rental.
There is a small pool by the restaurant but we always had it to ourselves. The beach was small but nice with chairs & the snorkeling was really good right off shore. There is a lot of rocks so you need water shoes if you're swimming.
Ashleigh was also very helpful in providing information about where to go on the island & the various things to do. We spent several days at Smugglers Cove as the beach was beautiful white sand which stretched far out in to the ocean so the swimming was excellent. If you walked a little way down the beach there was excellent snorkeling. Some of the locals have set up at the beach serving delicious drinks & food for very reasonable prices. We also took a catamaran snorkel tour which Michelle & Ashleigh arranged that was a lot of fun.
I can't say enough good things about Frenchmans & Tortola. We would definitely like to go back as would like to explore more of the island as well as some of the other islands nearby. Staying at Frenchmans was like going to a wealthy friends villa with several cottages on their property. You had so much privacy in your cottage & you had a lot of privacy no matter where you were on the grounds. Michelle & Ashleigh were available if you needed anything & tried to make sure that our stay was exactly what we were looking for.
If you are looking for a quiet place to stay, Frenchmans is perfect. The four of us described it as staying in paradise.

We recently spent eight days at Frenchman’s in a two bedroom villa which we shared with good friends. The two bedroom villas at Frenchman’s are ideal for two couples as one bedroom is located upstairs and the other downstairs providing total privacy. Each bedroom was equally appointed with a private bath with a walk-in shower, king size bed and a private deck. The resort has been recently renovated and the villas have been beautifully decorated with elegant and high quality furnishings. The beds were extremely comfortable.

The pool, though not very large, was more than adequate and very refreshing. The poolside furniture was unique and elegant, definitely not what you will find at most other resorts on the island. The grounds are meticulously maintained and covered with lush greens and multicolored flowering shrubs. The resort sits out on a point, so the views are spectacular from every location on the property.

We communicated with Michelle, Assistant Manager, a number of times prior to our visit via email. She was very prompt in returning mail and answering our questions. She gave us suggestions regarding boat and car rentals; however we opted to make the car arrangements ourselves. (We probably should have taken her suggestion of a local company) Our villa was immaculate when we arrived. We did find that we needed a few things such as a hairdryer in the second bathroom; however Michelle saw to it that we got what we needed as soon as possible, including the hairdryer. Ashleigh was away during most of our stay, so we only got to meet her briefly.

We had the opportunity to interact with Scott Hart, General Manager, on a number of occasions. He was a pleasure and could not be more accommodating. We believe that, under Scot’s direction, Frenchman’s will remain a prime resort on Tortola. He personally arranged a breakfast tray and had it delivered to our villa for the next morning as we had to leave early to pick up our boat rental. The restaurant was only open for dinner two nights a week serving Mexican Food. We heard from other guests that the food was very good; however we did not get to eat there. We did, however, thoroughly enjoy our complimentary continental breakfast each morning consisting of fresh fruit, cereal and pastries.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Frenchman’s and hope to return next year.

My husband and I traveled to Frenchmans the day we got married and we are so happy we did! The Mango Villa was absolutely amazing. We loved the style of the house and the layout. Great bathroom! Perfect for a couple alone or traveling with another couple. Beautiful view and so peaceful. Ashley and Michelle are absolutely the best! Outstanding service. Husband and I have high expectations and they went beyond. They offered us great recommendations for local activities and dining. It made our trip complete. They totally went out of their way to help us whenever we needed. The location of the resort is great. We loved that it was tucked away but only a 10 minute walk to Sopers Hole Marina. If you are looking for a beautiful place to stay that causes immediate relaxation, this is it! We are looking forward to our next visit!

We spent 5 days at Frenchmans in Feb of this year, staying in the Lime Villa. We loved it - very romantic and private with beautiful grounds. Great attention to detail in the villa and wonderful service. The continental breakfast that we had in the main building every morning was a treat, with fresh fruit , yogurt and pastry. It was a chance to discuss our day's activities and dinner choices with Scott and get his recommendations - always right on! Michelle was a pleasure and always had a smile for us. All in all, a great stay.

Needing a place to go for a few days prior to a week on St. John, my husband and I decided to give Tortola a try. We chose Frenchman's based on the reviews we read and were not disappointed. From the moment we first contacted Frenchmans and throughout our stay, both Michelle and Ashleigh could not have been more accommodating. Picking us up at the ferry terminal, arranging a rental car, beach and restaurant suggestions - every possible need was attended to. Although we were told that the property was full during our stay, we only saw one other group which gave us the feeling that the beautiful surroundings were entirely ours! The rooms are elegantly furnished and extremely comfortable and the grounds are lush and well maintained. Although the restaurant was not formally open while we were there, an authentic Mexican dinner was being offered on Wednesday and Friday nights. We were wise enough to take advantage of this and were treated to the most romantic evening (we had the restaurant to ourselves) and a delicious meal expertly prepared by Estella. A daily buffet breakfast consisting of an assortment of cereals, fruit and pastries is available to all guests. We were sorry when it was time to leave - we would have loved to have stay longer and will certainly be returning to Frenchmans.
