My wife and I stayed at Fort Recovery the last week of February, 2008. We stayed in what they called one of "The newer penthouses". While it may have been newer than many of the rooms it by no means was new. It seemed as if it was slapped together many years ago by some crew who paid little attention to detail or quality. None the less, it did have a great view of St John's and Drakes Passage and it was very close to the water. We enjoyed several late afternoons and evenings taking in the view and sunsets. Unfortunately that is pretty much the highlight's of Fort Recovery. The reception/mgmt staff (other than Pamelah who was great) were indifferent to any of our requests and inquiries. Matt was particularly unhelpful. He seemed to appear bothered or inconvenienced anytime you asked him a question. We saw him check in some weary travelers late one night who had a look of astonishment on their faces at the complete lack of hospitality of this guy. I had a hard time understanding why a guy like this was in a position of guest services because of his lack of a personality, until we learned he was engaged to a daughter or granddaughter of the owner. The ladies in the restaurant and housekeeping were helpful enough but overall they gave the impression of being bothered whenever you needed something. I guess it’s an Island ting. Sounds like an excuse to me. The road that is right off the property is definitely a negative. The regular road noise is bad enough albeit tolerable under normal conditions but we had the good fortune of staying there during some sort of road project. I called it “The dump truck derby”. They were moving some fill from down the road by the West end past the resort to a spot near Road Town. So, for three of the days during our stay starting at 7am going until 3ish about 20 dump trucks raced back and forth at about 40-50 mph (They must have been getting paid per load). They used their engine brakes as they rounded the corner by Fort Recovery. You were literally shaken out of bed!! I was astonished by this. I understand that stuff happens and so does construction, but the speed limit is 20 mph and these guys in these trucks were nuts. You risked your life on those roads during this. Also, the view was nice from the resort but the beach was small, rocky and not very good for swimming or snorkeling. The pool also lacked. It was surrounded by three buildings, completely in the shade and I never saw anyone use it.The restaurant at Fort recovery was nothing special. The food was decent but over priced. You are better off eating elsewhere(need a car) or just picking up some stuff for your room for some meals during your stay.
We did enjoy some of the sights in and around Tortola. Smugglers cove was nice as was Long Bay beach. Road Town didn’t do much for us. You definitely want to rent a car or plan on spending a lot for taxis. We day tripped it over to Virgin Gorda and The Bath’s. That was one of the highlight’s of the trip. There were a lot of people there but it was a lot of fun swimming, snorkeling and climbing around on all of those huge rocks. A must do if you go there. The snorkeling trip from the resort was nice. They took us to two nice places to snorkel off of Jost Van Dyke and a very quiet and beautiful little marina for lunch. The boat captain and Matt (again) were the low light of the trip. They said little to nothing and made you feel like an unwelcome guest. Unfortunately for us the other guests cancelled so we had the boat to ourselves. Normally this would have been an okay thing but with the the complete lack of hospitality of the Fort recovery staff, it made it a less enjoyable day.
We would not return here. The room had a nice view but that’s it. We did have a relaxing, fun trip in spite of the short comings of Fort Recovery.

We spent three days at Fort Recovery. It is very private and away from the crowds. The villas are very clean, roomy and beautifully decorated. I would suggest renting a car ahead of time, as it is not within walking distance to restaurants or night life and taxis can get quite expensive if you venture out on a regular basis. Priceless views, right on the waters edge. I would go back in a New York minute!

We recently spent 3 days at Fort Recovery, Feb. 14-17, with another couple. We each had a beachfront villa, and they were more than we expected! Very large and nicely decorated, with a nice little deck not 10 feet from the ocean. Fort Recovery is secluded and quiet, which we really liked after spending 5 days at a busy resort on another island. Make sure you rent a car ahead of time, as cabs are very pricey and the resort is not near anything. Not much to do at the resort, but that was fine; we loved driving around or just enjoying the ocean and the beautiful vistas outside our villa. Their beach is small & rocky with lots of seaweed -- bring water shoes. We enjoyed it nevertheless. Some minor inconveniences: the resort does not provide hair dryers, irons or alarm clocks. If you need them, bring your own. We would definitely go back.

We were a little bit bummed out upon our arrival that we couldn’t walk up to a bar and get a frozen drink the day of our arrival or any other day (just seems like the thing to do when arriving into the Caribbean.) Also, a little bit disappointed with the construction going on. I don’t remember being made aware that it was happening or it’s possible that it slipped my mind since I had a lot going on.

Anyway, the room was very spacious (new villa) and extremely clean. The all inclusive package was well worth it; breakfasts and 4 dinners. The chef does a great job with the meals and the service is terrific!

The staff was friendly and pleasant and made us feel like we were at “home.” We did wish that a few staff members were a little bit more knowledgeable about the area, but we managed.

My advise is to rent a car for most or the entire stay since taxis will break the bank and there’s not a ton to do at the resort (unless you want to relax by the beach and decompress). Fort Recovery was not frilly, however, it was an extremeful peaceful and very pleasant place to stay. You’re just a step away from the ocean and can enjoy the sound of the ocean waves from your villa! We were very sad on our last day and wished we had booked for a few more days. :)

My girlfriend and I, both empty nester single moms in our 50s, stayed at Fort Recovery the week of December 15th. We lucked out when we discovered Fort Recovery on-line after our originally scheduled Windjammer Barefoot Cruise was canceled. We decided on gut feel to stay here after corresponding with Pamelah via email. Pamelah was very informative, answering all of our questions in a timely manner. Sure, we knew that we were taking a chance staying at a place sight unseen, but we decided to go for it. We had planned for months to take our vacation at this time, so there was no turning back.

We decided to go with the all-inclusive plan, which is a little different from my idea of all-inclusive - no lunch available, you have to pay for alcohol...however, it did include the use of a cell phone provided by Pamelah, the use of a small SUV for the week we were there, a complimentary massage ( my girlfriend had never had a massage before, and I told her that she lucked out because Elizabeth was EXCELLENT), complimentary pedicure (or manicure), a full breakfast every day and 4 dinners. The full breakfasts were excellent - try the blueberry pancakes - but, sometimes, we went for the Continental if we were in a hurry or just not hungry enough for a full meal. The ladies who work in the restaurant are very nice and are very accommodating - we did mess up the first time we went to have dinner - we forgot to submit our order by the 6 p.m. deadline - but once we were straightened out by the stern kitchen manager, we never missed placing our order in time again! By the way, this stern kitchen manager turned out to be a delightful person - she actually told us we were her favorite guests that week! Just remember, It also helps if you are friendly and warm towards them - kindness is as kindness does.

The dinners were very nice and the food plentiful - I especially liked the fresh vegetable soups served with dinner - the entrees were delicious, but I am a vegetable person and could have made a meal out of their soups and the fresh baguettes! Once again it is important to note the friendliness, responsiveness and helpfulness of the restaurant staff.

Our room, Upper 12, was in the newer section of villas. The room was very clean and comfortable. We were on the 2nd floor and enjoyed the constant breeze from the open doors to the balcony. The villas come with fully equipped kitchenettes - coffee maker, microwave, small refrigerator, flatware, glasses, dinnerware - we never cooked ourselves, but we did buy coffee and creamer so we could enjoy our morning coffee at our leisure. The villas were very quiet, but we also happened to pick the week before Christmas which is usually the last quiet time before the winter holiday rush and high season - the perfect time!
For those of you who need A/C, the units are quite powerful - my girlfriend loved it - I could have gone without it for the entire week.

The beach is small and somewhat steep in sections, but it was clean with nice lounge chairs. There are other much larger beaches elsewhere on the island, but this beach is perfect for mornings and late afternoons. If you see the house dog, Becky, anywhere near the beach - beware - after a while she will neurotically chase coconuts up and down the beach barking all the while until one of the staff comes to take her away.

The free snorkeling trip which is part of the all-inclusive package was GREAT!

All in all our experience at Fort Recovery was excellent and we would love to visit again. The West End of the island is more laid back and quiet, so if you are looking for the late night scene, you are out of luck here. It really helped to have the use of the SUV so we could do our own exploring and visit some absolutely beautiful out of the way beaches. The locals drive like bats out of hell here, so be careful - it takes a day or so to get used to driving on the left, but the experience is worth it. In addition, be sure to carefully inspect your rental vehicle - it was not the cleanest (thank goodness for Febreze) and most well-maintained ( the check engine light stayed on and we were told to ignore it) as we would have liked, but it was great to be able to go where we wanted on our own schedule.

Take the ferry to Jost Van Dyke and spend the day at White Bay - take the ferry to Virgin Gorda and enjoy the Baths but REMEMBER - DO NOT GO WHEN THE CRUISE SHIPS ARE IN -
TOO MANY PEOPLE/TOO CROWDED - the island feel can get lost.

Many thanks to Pamelah. Matt and the rest of the staff. You made our trip to Tortola one of our best ever!!!

Just back 30th Dec 07 from a memorable week at Fort Recovery. The tone of our stay was set from moment we arrived mid-morning, when welcomed warmly by Pamelah and offered a much needed late full breakfast . Her liaison with our rental car people at ferry dock after our "We're here!" phone call was great.

The villas front onto Drake's Passage and a small sandy/rocky beach (cleaned daily), with lovely views across the islands, beautiful daily sunsets, and glorious rainbows after a couple of showers. The medium sized freshwater pool is clean and was in use a lot by children/teenagers of families staying.

Our villa was large, light airy lounge, large bedroom, comfortable bed, good sized bathroom, all tastefully appointed, very clean. Bar kitchenette equipped with fridge, juicer, coffeemaker, microwave, essential crockery etc; and a "Welcome" basket of goodies, nibbles, fruit, and champagne (we had a 'package ' deal). There was a generous verandah onto the water's edge (usefully half shaded in mornings) with chairs and table. Air conditioning in bedroom, effective hurricane fan in lounge area, TV. Very nice, high quality soap in bathroom. No shampoo etc., but we'd brought our own. Clean towels daily. No hairdryer in room, but available in office we believe. Lots of books on shelves.

We felt welcomed into a small community during our stay. All staff were very friendly and courteous. We received hugs when we left. Nothing was too much trouble. Pamelah and admin staff were 100% proactive in sorting anything at all required, often before we asked. If we were asked to wait a while because Pamelah very busy, the thing we'd wanted sorted or addressed was done quietly and notified later. This is the Caribbean, things happen rather differently sometimes, and a litle more slowly. That's part of the experience.

Breakfast was relaxed, amongst pretty plants and shrubs on a shady verandah. We had excellent service those days we requested a cooked American breakfast. Being English, we did miss cereals. Toasted English Muffins were great. The food those evenings we ate dinner there (included in our 'package') was good, with generous tasty portions...we didn't go hungry! Like home-cooking, and served in a friendly way. The Christmas Day Turkey Dinner was super.

We thought Fort Recovery's location to be the best on the island for several reasons. It has sunshine out front from morning thru afternoon/evening (with some nice shade on half of verandah till around 11am, in December). Other resorts on the island have deep shade afternoons, as facing north. Cane Garden Bay receives all the big cruise ship downloads, and is "heaving" frequently.

Fort Recovery is near much of the best Tortola has to offer: ie, some of Tortola's best restaurants nearby; 10 minutes by jeep to Long Bay beach (best on island, and with some surfing); Soper's Hole shops, marina, restaurant/bar only minutes away; Cane Garden Bay, Apple Bay, lovely Brewers Bay, and all they have to offer 15 or so minutes away; Road Town easily accessible; several good diving and snorkling sites close by. We loved it, and had one of the best holidays of our lives, preceded by a week's sail cruise.

The day out on the Fort Recovery boat to snorkling sites and Willy T's boat restaurant for lunch was memorable. Fort Recovery's beach may be small, but the views, sunsets and rainbows more than compensate for that, specially when other superb beaches are so close and easy to reach. It is quiet, homely, and the noise from the road passing the property is acceptable. (And I am a moaner about noise at night!)

I read a good selection of other reviews before writing this. I can see people would find things not to their liking if they arrived wanting a flashy beach resort or Marriott/Holiday Inn experience, with super-slick waiter service on hand, rather than friendly and homely TLC and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. This is the Caribbean, and one needs to factor that in.

  • Liked — Fronts onto seascape/views, pretty, fairly quiet, comfortable, homely, good situation on island
  • Disliked — Not much shade after 11am on beach; more variety at breakfast would be good, as American biased.
