“Smart place to stay before a charter”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2014

Very convenient, rooms between descent and very nice. Good outdoor bar scene. Biggest plus is that it is right on the marina and a short walk to boats. Don't over complicate if chartering a boat stay here

We stayed at the Moorings before and after our sail in the BVI. The grounds and personnel are delightful. The rooms are marginal at best. Great beds, especially after a week at sea in the cramped "stateroom" of a 36foot sail boat. The rooms are clean, but we had no hot water for showers. The bar next to the rooms is nice and the people are attentive.

I stayed there before chartering a sailboat as most clients do. Un fortunately for an hotel charging a very expensive price per night during high season , one would expect more. Reception crew was basic and inattentive, room renovated and quite nice but no hot water for shower!!! come on!!! restaurants on the site pricey and food just okay service need lots of improvement! Pool could be cleaner and pool chairs need urgent replacement!

Rooms are slightly better than basic. Service can be slow - but it's "The Islands, Mon!" The only reason that you would stay here is to take a boat out the next day. However, it is clean and feels spacious and friendly and if you get the pricier "marina view" room you will fall asleep to the sounds of the harbor.

This review is about two of the restaurants on the property, first the original restaurant on the property, and a surprising coffee shop in the new part of the property. I have no real experience of the hotel or Charlies, a new restaurant that appears to be part of the hotel (though I will observe that Charlies functions more as a bar, and a very loud one, than a restaurant, at least on the weekends I was staying on a boat there). Please note that my "average" rating is just that - the restaurant gets a "terrible" rating, the coffee shop gets an "excellent" rating, so the averaged rating is "average".

The original restaurant is a pair of open pavilions near the pool. At dinner and breakfast, they lay out a buffet. Can't speak to the breakfast, but having arrived late-ish last Saturday evening, we had no choice but this place (we'd all been there before and not much liked it, but we had no choice at that hour). The salads were passable, but all six of us were served fish or meat that was unevenly cooked and uniformly charred. The net result was that all of us left behind between a quarter and a third of our main course meat or fish and as we left on finishing, we saw from the plates on uncleared tables that many people had been similarly served inedible food and had abandoned it.

The final insult was to be reminded that the "service charge" went only to the kitchen and not to the wait staff. Aaah, tango sierra, guys. Bad food - no, foul food - gets a bad tip.

We did have a pleasant breakfast at the coffee shop across from Charlies, and - surprise - we found that the same establishment served Asian-themed dinners on the terrace, so we had Malaysian-spiced mahi-mahi, conch and calamari. A bit too much heat in the sauces for my taste, but beautifully cooked and simply presented. Highly recommended.

As usual, the rooms and bathroom were clean but basic and could use an update. (Bath towels could be slightly larger too). we've stayed here numerous times due to its convenient location to picking up our Moorings Charter but wish it was a little nicer. The staff were friendly and looking out over all the masts was beautiful. Someone told us that there are some newly renovated rooms towards the end of dock - just above where the Moorings check-in is located.

Room Tip: ask if there are any newly renovated rooms available

After chartering with the Moorings for over 20 years we decided to charter for 12 days in the BVI for a family trip over Christmas to New Years 2013-14. We first had a 43.3 which had so many problems we turned it back in after 1 1/2 days and got a second boat. The charts on the second boat were for Mexico. Ha ha. This boat also had numerous problems. Since we were trying to have a fun vacation we tried our best to fix everything but without a basic toolkit on board we had to improvise. Anyway, so disappointed with the Moorings. Used to be a good company. We will no longer charter from them.
