My wife and I decided to celebrate our one-year anniversary, so we booked a week of sun, sand and rum in Tortola - a new island for both of us. I found a great rate at hotels.com for a standard room #241, which was just steps above the pool and an easy walk to the beach and restaurants. The room was the right size and the small kitchen and full refrigerator were a great plus. Our only concern was not having a shower curtain, which was both different and annoying, but not a deal breaker. We opted for the room safe, which I highly recommend at any hotel. After several trips to the Caribbean we never expect too much from the hotel staff or the personnel at local restaurants and shops. To our surprise the well-documented rudeness was never severe as many others have endured. We did find the nicest encounters were with those not native to Tortola.
The hotel food at “1748” was good, but not great. We liked having breakfast, mostly for socializing and a fresh cup of coffee, but it never cost us less than $25 for eggs, bacon, toast and tip.
We ended up buying cereal at the local store and had breakfast in our room 4 of the 7 days. We had the dinner barbecue the first night but the rest of the trip we ate out. Sugar Mill and Pusser's Landing (West End) were terrific and the most consistent. I recommend Pusser's for lunch, dinner and drinks. Try the conch fritters, the coconut crusted snapper, the ribs and of course the notorious Painkillers. There are gift shops, a general store and it is a great place to relax and take in the atmosphere.
Our experience over the years has taught us to rent a jeep/car and Tortola is no exception. The twisting roads and steep inclines pushed up the adventure ante and the freedom is well worth the price. We rented a jeep wrangler at $300 for 5 days. It is a lot cheaper than taking taxis from our hotel. I recommend Jerry’s Car Rental – not far from the West End dock. They provided free pick-up and return from the hotel. The beaches: we walked to Smuggler's Cove, but I advise taking a shuttle or drive, it can be a “long” walk back after 5 hours at the beach. We also loved Lambert Beach, Long Bay on Beef Island, Josiah's beach and the hotel beach, although rocky in front of the 1748 restaurant, just walk west and you can find a good point to swim.
We befriended 3 feral cats, two black and one orange kitty all pf whom made themselves at home and enjoyed sharing our bed. They appreciated the cold milk, leftover fish and surprisingly the crunchy taste of Doritos. They made our stay at the hotel feel a little like home. If you like cats Orange Kitty is the friendliest.
This time of the year begins the off-season, so the hotel appeared half empty and it often felt like we were all alone - I counted 18 guests at breakfast one morning. The activities desk even closed
and we had to make our daily beach towel exchange at the front desk. Overall we liked the hotel, just right - not too fancy and feel we got a great value. Next time we would like to stay in the oceanfront bungalows and be right on the beach. Hopefully the hotel will invest in some landscaping upgrades, a little TLC, newer beds with down pillows and offer free food and drinks at the poolside happy hour. This could improve the socializing with other guests.
If you don’t expect too much, don’t need more than some sun, a good book and rum, then Long Bay and Tortola will work for you. As of today, we prefer still St. John and Virgin Gorda.
