My wife and I spent one night at Lambert Beach Resort following a bareboat sailing charter and were terribly disappointed that such a beautiful spot has become so neglected.
After we arrived in early afternoon we immediately noticed that the property seemed to be deserted. We checked in and went to our beachfront room to find the lawn tall with weeds. A sliding class door was our only room access and opening required both hands and nearly a foot on the jamb. The immediately noticed areas like table tops, toilet, sink were clean, but after looking a little closer the ceiling fan, corners, and such were coated with dust and grime. The curtains were too small for the sliding door, so we had to prop a chair on the curtain at night to spread it enough to cover the door. If you like TV, they had 3 FOX channels TBS, HBO and a couple NY broadcast channels. One nice feature was a remote control for the AC unit.
We went to the beachfront restaurant for lunch, and though it was around 1:30 pm we were the only ones there. The “catch of the day” was a previously frozen mahi mahi square. Even though the food was so-so it was still a beautiful setting.
The beach is very nice, with high terrain on both ends, and even some large granite boulders on one side, reminiscent of the south end of Virgin Gorda. The surf was high due to north swells that had been coming in all week, so we did not snorkel and do not know if there is any reef to explore from shore. The resort had built little palapas with tables under them on the beach, and it looked like the palm fronds on them had been there for years. With so little effort they could replace the fronds and really spruce up the look of their beach area. They also have beach lounge chairs, yet they are old and faded.
As we explored the grounds we found mature but neglected landscaping. We noticed a number of rooms with their sliding doors open and seemingly in a state of remodel, with furniture piled up inside and out on the porches. We looked in a few and it was obvious that they had been in that state for quite sometime.
The pool was large and had a green tint to it and had a swim-up bar, again all deserted. The bar had not been in use for sometime, as there were old leaves all over the floor and a radio and drink machine and other equipment piled up in a corner. As we walked around the leeward side of the pool we got a whiff of sewage and knelt down to smell the water. The smell was coming from the pool!
There is an attractive recreation building, constructed from stone, with a pay pool table and a big screen TV. The TV area had an inch of water all over the floor and empty shelves that I imagine once had an array of games and books for all the happy guests to enjoy.
We went back to the restaurant for dinner. There was one other guest at the bar with the remote and was channel surfing the whole Dish Network spectrum. The dinner menu was too much food for us, and we asked our very courteous waitress if we could get something else. She had them make a veggie burger, which was good and just the right amount. I also asked her what was going on with the resort. She indicated that they had recently changed hands and the new owners were still working on what they were going to do with the resort. She was understandably concerned for her job and reflected on the beautiful weddings they used to have.
It was easy to imagine how nice this place used to be. It is a lovely setting that deserves so much more care than it is receiving. The employees were kind and hospitable and were doing what they could to make an obviously bad situation tolerable. The owners, however, should shut down the resort until they can offer a product that shows respect for the guests and their money.
