My husband and I sailed past Scrub Island during our Christmas vacation with the family and could not wait to return as a couple. After spending the summer in different cities, we were looking for a quiet romantic get-away, with time to re-connect, and that's actually what this resort and the staff offers. The communication with resort staff prior to our trip was excellent. I had lots of questions regarding boat rentals, excursions and near-by restaurants. Each email I sent was promptly answered. They even sent me a copy of the ferry/shuttle schedule so that I could arrange convenient flights to Beef Island and not waste a day traveling.
We decided to fly to San Juan the evening before our visit to Scrub Island and then catch the very first flight from SJU to EIS (Tortola AP). Our flight was uneventful and on-time. The Scrub Island staff was waiting outside the AP doors with a sign and had an air conditioned van ready to escort us to the pier. They handled our luggage, we boarded the boat and were off in less than 20 minutes. The ride to Scrub Island (SI) is quick and comfortable, We were asked if we'd like a rum punch...once docked, we were greeted with a punch and escorted to the reception area.
Kellie Ann took care of registering us and arranged for our boat rental the following morning. She was extremely polite, warm and welcoming. I felt as it she genuinely cared about ensuring we were happy and going to be satisfied with our stay. During the registration process, we were also greeted by Bennie, the resort manager.
On day #1, we stayed in a king room with a small balcony and water view. It was beautiful and very clean. The rooms at SI are by far the best in the Caribbean, hand's - down....and we've stayed on the majority of the islands.
Our first stop that afternoon, was the pool and swim up bar, where we met Stacey & had lunch. She is another big reason why our trip was so enjoyable. She's best described as a friendly and charismatic women from St Vincent and the Grenadines, who shared stories with us about the smaller islands and the sites to see in Tortola. We enjoyed her company all week long and looked forward to the drinks she'd mix up during "happy hour." What a great ambassador for SI! The poolside food was good and exactly what we wanted.
All of the restaurants offered a good selection of entrees and wine. We tried all of them and we very pleased with our meals! It always seemed as if something on was open (early hrs to late in the evening) when we got hungry and we never called ahead for reservations.
The following morning, a gentleman oriented my husband to the boat, quickly filled out the paperwork and was great providing tips; he even provided snorkeling gear. I made a quick stop @ the deli for some awesome deli sandwiches and the rest of the things necessary for a picnic lunch on Peter Island. They had coffee, fresh fruit and croissants to-go for breakfast and were open at 07:15, so we wasted no time getting on the water. The boat adventure was the highlight of our trip: we made it to Virgin Gorda and were one of the first boats at the Baths. It was fun to wander through the boulders without the crowds. We visited the Indians for a snorkel and drove past St John, on our way to Jost Van Dyke for a painkiller at Soggy Dollar Bar. White Bay is one of my most favorite beaches in the BVI's. We crammed a lot into a 9-hr trip and but had everything planned out ahead of time and were familiar with the BVI's. For a more relaxed experience, you'd probably be better served to split this up into 2-3 excusions.
Day #2 we were upgraded to a suite with a kitchen. Our luggage was moved from our previous room to the new one. WOW! What a treat!!! It had anything and everything we could ask for: granite counters, Wolfe range, SubZero refrigerator, huge bathroom and large balcony for enjoying coffee/drinks. Great beds and toiletries, as well. House keeping was the best!
I picked up some groceries at the market and even cooked a bit.
The remainder of the trip was spent in and out of the water, trying to master SUP, lounging at North Beach, getting to know other adult guests at the infinity pool. Everything about SI was relaxed, comfortable and easy! The customer service is wonderful.
Another staff member we'd like to recognize is Mark, the bartender at North Beach. We were the only couple at the beach for several hours and felt like we were on a secluded island with a personal bartender/chef!
Later in the week, Kellie Ann arranged a rental car on Tortola and we spent the day exploring Road Town and completing an island drive. Lunch at Pusser's was yummy. They, too, have great pizza and painkillers.
One of the things we liked about this visit was the lack of children at the resort. It was nice to have a peaceful poolside environment. Several of the guests we got to know that week we either on the honeymoons or docking their yachts at the marina and taking advantage of the resort amenities. Several people did comment on the condition of the pool. While very beautiful and relaxing, it was showing signs of aging, pieces of plaster chipping away and missing glass tiles on the infinity edge. In the resort's defense, maintenance is always an issue in the Caribbean and making these repairs would probably require closing the pool to re-plaster and re-tile. This was a very minor issue but one that almost everyone mentioned.
The evening before our departure, a copy of our bill was delivered to our room. They made recommendations for which ferry to take, dependent upon individual flight times. Our luggage was picked up and delivered to the boat, while we had a leisurely breakfast. I never got since the they were rushing us to check out.
While in Tortola, I checked with the Seaborne Airline desk to see how early we'd need to arrive for check-in. An hour is ample time, but remember that you need to save cash for the BVI departure tax ($20 pp) prior to passing through TSA.
Overall, this resort is one of the finest we've visited and we are looking forward to returning with our friends next fall. I'm almost sad to write this review because I'd like SI to remain a hidden "gem." Thanks again for a wonderful visit!
If you can afford to splurge on an suite with a kitchen, it is definitely worth it.
