“Breathtaking vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

just got back from the BVI and Scrub Island and it was amazing! The hotel was beautiful and all the staff was so friendly and accommodating! We really enjoyed the Dive BVI island hopper tour definitely worth the money and the rum punch is delicious! It was so peaceful and enjoyable a great place to unwind and relax on vacation! Make sure you try the pain killer! The view from the hotel room was breath taking! I will defiantly be going back!

We stayed at Scrub Island Resort from November 19-27, 2012 (8 nights) with our two kids, ages 13 and 15. In the interests of full disclosure, I had 5 nights free as part of a prize from the Caribbean Travel + Life Photo Contest. I had enough Marriott points for 2 nights - Scrub joined the Marriott Autograph Collection about a year ago - so I paid full freight for just one night. We were required to pay for the upgrade from a standard room to a suite to use our points because your Marriott points (40,000 per night) are for a standard room.

We booked a 2-bedroom suite, and were upgraded to the larger 2-bedroom Governor's suite. It features a full kitchen, 2 and 1/2 baths, two terraces (one really large one), and a large living and dining area. There was a washer and dryer in the suite, which with a family is a big plus. The suite was very comfortably furnished, and was a great place to relax in between excursions.

We did not realize how close everything was in the islands. At Scrub, you are just a ten-minute ferry ride from Trellis Bay on Beef Island, where you will find the airport (EIS). The Scrub Island host meets you at the airport, transports you and your luggage to Trellis Bay, and you then take the Scrub Island ferry to the resort. You are a half mile from Marina Cay (a short boat ride or a good kayak ride). Even closer is Great Camanoe which has a great snorkeling area very close to Scrub (thanks Benny for the tip!) You can plan day trips to the rest of the islands in the BVI. Dive BVI has a location at Scrub and has an friendly and very helpful staff. We took the trip via Dive BVI to Anegada (about an hour boat ride) and to Virgin Gorda (about 15-20 minutes). It's a convenient jumping off point to the islands. Our guides for Anegada (Tara and Launa) and Virgin Gorda (Tara and Bryan) were top notch! They really made the trips fun.

I was impressed with the staff at the resort. The concierge was very helpful in making reservations and giving us advice on what we can do or where we can go. Benny, the manager, introduced himself upon arrival, always said hello, and was helpful throughout our stay, including directing us to that great snorkeling spot.

As for beaches, the island itself is limited. Pavillion Beach, right in front of the resort, is small, but nice. It has a sandy bottom, a big raft for the kids to climb on, and is in close proximity to lots of sea life along the adjacent shoreline and docks. North Beach is a nice stretch of beach to walk, but it takes quite a while to get past the shallow water with a coral bottom out to open water. It's a nice place to relax on a beach chair. Close by is a bar, the "One Shoe Bar" and a small pool if you want to take a dip. If you are hungry, they'll ring up the restaurant and bring it out to you. There is also a beach called Honeymoon Beach, which can only be reached by water. We didn't head there as it seemed wrong to disrupt "Honeymoon" Beach with a couple of teenagers. We found great beaches on Anegada and Virgin Gorda on our day trips there.

Scrub has a fantastic pool. The top tier has an infinity edge pool overlooking the islands. There is also a hot tub on that level. The lower level has a small, but super fast, water slide. Both levels have swim up bars. I'm not much for pools, as I would rather hang out in the ocean, but I really liked this one, and found myself wanting to go there.

For photographs and a more detailed description, I did a trip report here: http://myirietime.com/bvi-trip-report-part-one-scrub-island/
I plan to do five trip reports total, including reports on Marina Cay, Tortola/Beef Island, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda.

I’ve been to BVI a few times and had never heard of Scrub Island until our travel agent suggested it. It’s an absolutely gorgeous, 5-star resort and spa on its own Island. It was independent, but as of two years ago they joined Marriott’s Elite line of hotels. If you’re looking to decompress in plush, contemporary surroundings, and want to be pampered, this is the place to be!

Pros:
• Process: they were all over it! As soon as our punctual Ferry pulled up, one of the administrators called out our name and handed us a drink! What a wonderful way to begin our stay!
• Accommodations: the rooms are absolutely breath-taking, but the best part is we were upgraded without even asking! Our suitcases were immediately brought to the most luxurious, large 1 bedroom, with spa bath (it was the size of my living room at home), and industrial appliance kitchen. The balcony was so huge you could play basketball. And the view, ah the view – absolutely gorgeous! In fact, there isn’t a spoiled view from any of the rooms. House-keeping was thorough, and invisible. There was evening turn-down service, as well.
• Cost: Excellent price, even before we got upgraded. Our travel agent tied the cost of this resort in with our flights, which shaved some of the cost.
• Food: the food is limited to the few restaurants on the island. Since we had a kitchen we bought provisions (grocery store on grounds) and ate a few meals in. You will quickly find you’re not limited to the restaurants at the resort. They make it so easy for you to take a Ferry to Marina Cay (Pusser’s Restaurant) and Trellis Bay (East end of Tortola). Trellis Bay offers some real tasty restaurants. This is also the location you would go to get the Ferry to “The Last Resort” restaurant. You can also easily grab a cab from Trellis Bay and go into Tortola proper to dine there, as well.
• Water sports: they offer 3 kayaks and 3 snorkel boards, as well as there is a dive shop on the grounds to book dive trips, snorkel trips and other types of excursions.
• To do: there is a full dive facility on the grounds so you can book dive trips, snorkel trips and other excursions. We usually took one of the kayaks (free) and snorkeled around the island. We also kayaked to Marina Cay, Trellis Bay, Honeymoon Beach, Lee National Park and all around North Beach (Scrub Island Resort’s other property on the North side). Guests seemed leery to venture out via kayak, but the destinations usually took 15 minutes. There are two pools (one is an infinity pool) with swim-up bars, as well as a very private pool on North Shore. Not too many people went to North Shore while we were there. You can either walk the steep road, or take a cab, offered by the resort, for the 5 minute ride to-and-from North Shore where you’ll not only find a pool, but a bar with full drink and food service, and private beach cabanas for Scrub Island guests.
• Transportation: You can set your watch to Scrub Island’s Ferry schedule. They were never late or early – very prompt. The Ferry departs to Trellis Bay every 30 minutes after the hour, and the return Ferry returns to Scrub Island every 45 minutes past the hour. You can go anywhere in the Virgin Islands from Trellis Bay.
• Spa: We didn’t take advantage of any of the Spa packages, but we heard from almost all the guests that the spa facilities and packages are wonderful!
• Overall: We had split our vacation between Scrub Island Resort and BEYC and it was the perfect pairing. Scrub Island Resort offered lots of pampering in a beautiful, modern setting. We will definitely come here again – great way to decompress before going home.

Cons:
• Dining: The only gripe we had about the food offered at the resort is the cost. The groceries from the store were expensive, the drinks were expensive and the food in the restaurants was expensive (nothing impressive about the dishes served, either). We immediately found ourselves either making meals in our fabulous kitchen, or going off the island to dine.
• Water sports/Excursions: Scrub Island Resort needs to step up their game in this area. They only offer 3 kayaks and 3 scuba boards for the entire resort guests. No matter how early we set out, we always had to wait for a kayak. The rest of the water-sports are offered at a hefty price. We were surprised they charged for snorkeling. Every resort I’ve gone to in the past 10 years offer free snorkel excursions. We overheard many guests complaining about getting “Island Fever” and I believe if they offered more free activities this would hamper the problem.
• Pools: Scrub Island Resort offers 3 pools: 1 infinity pool w/swim up bar and Jacuzzi; 1 pool w/slide and swim-up bar; 1 pool on North Beach with full bar. I, along with many of the single guests, highly recommend that they dedicate the pool w/slide for children, and keep the infinity pool w/swim up bar and Jacuzzi for adults only. Kids were constantly fighting in the Jacuzzi, taking up all the seats at the swim-up bar, and yelling to the top of their lungs while splashing guests and hitting them with their swimming noodles. I don’t dislike children, but I signed up for a relaxing spa resort, not a day-care. After our second day of this we spent the rest of our time kayaking and swimming – away from the resort pool. The resort also requests for quests to “check-out” towels (they have a limit). But, when we returned our towels there was no one ever there to erase our name, so what is the point of that process?
• Overall: I hope Scrub Island makes a few changes (more free activities, and dedicating 1 pool for adults only). If those two things are done I will definitely return! Either way I would probably still return, as well as recommend.

Room Tip: No tip on choosing a good room -- all the rooms are beautiful and have ocean views. We do recommend...

Just returned from a wonderful four nights on Scrub Island. We used Marriott points for two of the four nights of our stay, so the price was certainly right. The room was comfortable, clean and well-appointed, with a spacious double-sink bath and separate toilet room, shower and tub. The king mattress was very comfortable. We also thought the food was excellent. Paradoxically, for dinner, the more formal Caravella restaurant with its fixed price menu ($55/person) was a better value than the informal outdoor deck restaurant. The breakfasts were also very good, and were included in the price for the two paid nights that we stayed.

We were concerned that having the rooms face the marina might result in a lot of noise, but that was not the case at all. The private beach, North Beach was wonderful, with excellent facilities (bar, water, padded chaise lounges and toilets), and transportation provided by the hotel gratis. All in all, a beautiful, quiet and relaxing place to stay, and a nice new addition to the Marriott family.

Room Tip: As for a higher floor to get the full view the property has to offer.

I have traveled extensively over the last twenty years and stayed at several JW Marriott's from DC to Vegas to Hawaii to Italy to Thailand so I have a goo idea of what I want in a luxurious vacation and the Scrub Island resort was exactly that--- luxurious, low key, filled with amenities in a fabulous location. We paid for the one bedroom on the ocean and it was well worth the money. The one bedrooms were well appointed with five star kitchen facilities for us to cook as well as laundry and a very large bathroom with a soaking tub. the pool facilities were great as was the beach over on the North side. While you are there, dont just keep to the pool area and small beach--its well worth the 5 minute ride over to North it was deserted all three times we went and it was like having our on private beach. If there are drawbacks on this resort here they are: we ate at the hotel one night--while acceptable it was not terrific--so we ate the remaining nights at Pussers (terrific) and Last Resort (good). The second drawback involves getting the full story--always ask lots of questions when at any Island resort. Here we hired a boat for a half day--except the captain thought it was a full day and we wound up having to pay a full day. Also, we arranged for our bags to be picked up the day we left--but within minutes of the launch leaving we had to hustle to the docks with our bags because no one had come--again lost in translation. Once you get all the facts--this place really is worth the trip if you want to unplug from the world. We found Binny and Rosalee to be particularly helpful with all our stuff as well.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

We've just returned from a wonderful six night stay at Scrub Island. This is a fantastic resort in a great location with just a few minor issues. This is a resort for anyone of any age looking for a little R & R or as a base from which to sail away. I would not recommend the resort for those who require perfect service or expect to be waited on hand and foot. This was our first trip to BVI and I'll do my best to break down our trip for other potential first timers.

AIRPORT

We flew into Beef Island (EIS) on American Eagle. We were met in front of the terminal by a woman in a resort uniform who directed us to the complimentary shuttle van. It's about $150-$200 cheaper to fly into St. Thomas but you'll need to organize your own ferry ride to Trellis Bay. This is apparently about $70 per person round trip and a 45 minute ride.

Transportation

The ride from EIS to Trellis Bay took a whopping 60 seconds. We were dropped off at the pier with another couple and told to wait for the next Scrub Island water taxi. The taxi comes to Trellis once an hour at 40 minutes after (e.g. 5:40, 6:40, 7:40) and leaves for the island 5 minutes later. The ride back to Scrub was/is 8 minutes long.

Arrival

We were met by a smiling woman with a welcome rum punch. She directed us to the front desk where our check in was smooth and easy. We were tired from a long travel day and didn't notice that my Marriott Gold status went unrecognized. We had booked a standard room. We weren't offered an upgrade nor were we asked about upgrading. I went back 3 nights into our stay and ended up agreeing to a $140 dollar nightly upgrade charge for a one bedroom suite. I was a little disappointed that the upgrade wasn't free as there were several empty suites at the time of my request but it worked out well.

Rooms (Standard Room 1233, One Bedroom Suite 1715) (4.75 stars)

The room was a well appointed but standard hotel room. The bathroom was nice. We weren't overly impressed with the mini-fridge or tiny balcony.

The suite comes with an oven, microwave, full sized refridgerator, nespresso machine, and huge balcony with a lounge chair. It was well worth the extra $140 a night. The floors were tile which tended to bring in the outside noise. This wasn't a big deal for us but it could be for some people. We loved our suite!

Restaurants. (4.5 stars)

The food at Caravella was very good. I had the best lobster! The sea bass was also very good. Before our trip, I had read some complaints about the price but we found the 4 course dinner at $55 per person to be reasonable.

Tiera Tiera is the open air restaurant next to the upper pool. We ate there twice. One the 2nd night we ate the $45 Caribbean buffet. This is a bit pricey but the shrimp were huge and the seafood salad was full of calamari, octopus, shrimp, and other seafood delights. The cheescake and key lime pie were also good. It was worth the price.

The Market. The deli sandwich's and subs were reasonably priced ($7-$8 each). We took subs from the Market to North Beach at least twice. If you have a suite it's much cheaper to stock the markets beer and liquor in your fridge than to drink at the bar.

Pools (5 stars)

We had a great time in the hotel pools. They are exactly as pictured. Your going to love the views. Perfect!

Beaches (5 stars)

Pavillion beach is right below the pool deck. You can jump on the water trampoline here or checkout a kayak or stand up paddleboard.

Honeymoon beach is only accessible by kayak, meaning it's certain you will have the area to yourself. The snorkling not so good. Make sure to wear watershoes.

North Beach is a true gem. The beach, the water, the chairs, the foliage, the small pool, and bar are all perfect. Make sure you wear watershoes here too.

Bars. (4.75 stars) There was never a long wait for a drink and the prices were reasonable. The rum punch was exceptional.

Service (4.25 stars) Everyone was very friendly and helpful but no one seemed to go the extra mile or take that extra step to be exceptional. We had a few minor issues like a wake up call and a taxi that never came, an upgrade that was never offered, and there just didn't seem an overwhelming urge to please. This isn't huge for us as we don't require that white glove service but it may be for some people. This could be just a training issue or maybe its just the slow laid back island life coming out in the staff.

Safety (5 stars)

The locals in the airport or Trellis Bay were friendly and helpful. The island resort is for guests only.

Intangibles (5 stars)

We love the tarpon swimming through the marina at night. We loved Dive BVI being on property. The Island Hopper and Virgin Gorda Explorer trips were unbelievable. Sarah from the dive shop was awesome. She led one of our trips and later gave free SCUBA lessons in the pool. and thanks to Brian and Laura. We had a great time. We also loved the close proximity to Trellis Bay and several restaurants.

We highly recommend Scrub Island. Enjoy!

Room Tip: The views from a room overlooking the Marina are best.

To begin with we had a fantastic stay at Scrub! The arrival didn't go quite as we had expected but at no fault of the resort. We happened to just barely miss the resort water taxi at Trellis so had to wait almost an hour for the next one. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal but after a full day of travel and a rain storm upon arrival it wasn't the best way to start the vacay. So you may want to double check your watch before arriving at Trellis, possibly stopping to grab a bite to eat or grab a few things at the store if you have time to spare. The main water taxi boat was out of service when we arrived so they used one of the excursion boats to pick us up on which would have been fine had it not leaked so bad during the storm. Sadly we and all our luggage were drenched by the time we crossed the bay but thankfully we awoke to a beautiful morning so it made the long day of travel and couple inconveniences worth it! We had a wonderful server for breakfast who I believe was from the Philippines. We found the food good and fairly priced considering location. After the kids enjoyed jumping on the water tramp we took advantage of the kayaks and headed across the bay to snorkel. I did advice the resort that charging to use paddle boards while having kayaks readily available for free seemed funny. I get if you are running into a problem with guests never getting an opportunity to use due to them always being checked out but they sat unused the whole time we were there. We were a little disappointed with the north beach. The cushions looked pretty aged for being a new resort and the beach wasn't raked or cleaned up but after later talking to the resort manager you understand some of these things better and can overlook them. It is still a fairly new resort trying to figure things out. The concierge staff was fantastic, helping us with everything from rental cars to taxis to ferry schedules. We took a day trip on our own to Virgin Gorda and had a blast. Concierge was great about helping to make everything go smoothly. Housekeeping was a bit spotty. A couple days it was after 2 p.m. and the room hadn't been cleaned. Not a big deal but something that could be improved especially considering the hotel was at minimal capacity the week after Thanksgiving. Dinner at the open air restaurant was great but when we came back to order the same dish again for dinner it was prepared much more spicy to the point I could barely eat it. The waitress said to just drink more water but I ended up filling up on my daughters fries instead. I did mention it to the front desk at checkout and I believe the meal was removed from our tab which was a nice gesture. Consistency amongst the cooks could be better. The suite was fantastic and well equipped for anyone wanting to cook and the view was gorgeous! The pool was great and we loved that the top area felt more adult oriented while the bottom area allowed for the kids to jump and play without disturbing the people above wanting to relax. The slide that emptied to the lower level of the pool was also a great addition. The market on site was a nice option but if they could possibly stock it up with a few gallons of milk would have been extremely helpful for families wanting to feed the kids cereal. You can see the island has a lot of potential as they are building private residences on portions of it. I was worried that having a place for boats to dock overnight could be a problem with the resort feeling overrun with boaters but we didn't have any problems with that except one night when a couple boats emptied out and headed up to the jacuzzi and took over the bar area. We headed back down to the lower pool and were fine. I would definitely recommend this resort but to someone who just wants to lounge by a nice pool and enjoy the beautiful scenery or someone who wants to be centrally located and take day trips to the surrounding islands. We were so glad we stayed here rather than on Tortola. I would recommend a day trip to Tortola which we did but again we were so thankful we got to come back to the beautiful Scrub!!!

Room Tip: We loved being on the third floor as we had vaulted ceilings. I'm not sure lower level rooms ha...
