“Awesome Beach & View”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2006

For everyone reading these comments and thinking how can this hotel have such widely varying reviews, don't worry we thought the same thing !! In a different setting Long Bay would be no more than an average hotel, but the beach location is truly stunning.

We stayed for four nights in early May, and the hotel was fairly empty which added to the appeal. We booked directly through longbay and got a significant discount from the big online travel websites above. We paid $192 a night for a long weekend, (don't do all inclusive, food quality not good enough)

First the negatives, the hotel is a little rough around the edges in parts, especially further away from the main building, and with the exception of the buffet breakfast at 1748, the food is pretty poor and overpriced. The staff are generally friendly though sometimes you do get the feeling that they are just tolerating you, However, in our view these negatives can all be explained by the fact that Tortola is not resort developed at all, so don't expect the kind of hotel refinements and service you would get at big resort or city hotels.

To the positives, our room was absolutely fantastic, we got an upgrade to the top floor of one of the Family Villas on the hill room #152. The view from the balcony was simply breathtaking, it was the highest point and furthest away from the main complex, and in our view was probably the best room in the entire hotel. The pool area and tennis courts are a good alternative to the beach, though we spent most of the time at the beach. The breakfast buffet at 1748 has a great selection, expecially fruit, juices, cereal etc, the hot food was ok but was stiil overpriced for the quality.

Definitely recommend hiring a car to get away from the resort, if you want to do anything but lounge at the beach or pool. We hired a car just for 24 hours and spent an afternoon walking around Sage Mountain. Make sure you take a map from the shop at the car park before setting out on foot as we didn't manage to find the lookout and just wandered along forest paths for a few hours !! Smugglers Cove was fantastic, beach is great and snorkelling is awesome. Recommend Sugar Mill & Quitos for dinner, in that order, Both have some great dishes, especially the jerk shrimp at Quitos.

Also recommend the White Squall day trip to Virgin Gorda & Cooper Island. Pierce and Chris, the captain and "first mate", were great fun and kept the drinks flowing throughout the day.

Last little tip, take plenty of cash as there are very few ATMs and only one on the Long Bay side of the island. Friday is pay day so the ATM frequently runs out of cash. We had to take a taxi to Road Town just to find a working ATM. !! Though you don't need cash at the hotel for meals, drinks etc, the shop and expensive taxis only accept cash so without a car, cash reserves run down quickly.

On the whole would return purely for the views and location, but just don't expect big resort luxury & service.

We recently returnred from a 5 day stay at Long Bay. Upon arrival the front desk staff were welcoming and gracious. We were shown to our Deluxe Hillside rooms # 214 and 216. We were 1 couple per room at about $400.00 per night all inclusive.

There were many nice things about these rooms:

Convienient kitchen
Good water pressure
Big balcony with a beautiful view

The issues we had with the hotel were related to the almost constant septic smell outside our rooms. After a day, we discovered that our room was next to the septic plant. If you book this hotel in this room catagory it would be advised to request not to be in these 2 rooms. I wish I had this info before my trip.

All Inclusive was fine and convienient but only because we had a low all inclusive rate. $400 is the maximum I would pay for this hotels all inclusive. You just sign your name to every bill. The tip is already included but we always added extra and the staff were very appreciative. As far a meals go, the breakfast was OK, the lunches were good at the swim up pool bar for a quick bite, but the dinners were not good at all. We finally started to explore different restaurants in the area and all were better than Long Bay. Our favorite was Bananakeet. Fabulous view, food and service. (Go for Sunset)

I highly reccommend renting a car for your stay. It was so easy to get around and safe to travel on this island. Smugglers Cove was a 5 minute drive and just beautiful. Not great signage but once you find it you don't want to leave. (You can rent chairs for $5 a day)

Overall we had a great vacation at Long Bay, septic and all but if you go ,do explore other dining options. We will next time as we will return in the near future.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon on Tortola at the Long Bay Beach Resort from May 1st through the 8th, 2006. I hope this review will help others make a decision about a possible trip to this resort.
We arrived at the airport at about 6:00pm and had a taxi waiting for us which was very nice as we were so ready to unload and relax. The driver was very nice and talkative, explaining things as we made the 45 minute drive to Long Bay. As a side note, the drive was an exilerating experience in itself - up and down switchbacks, stunning views and speed!
Upon arrival at the reception desk we were greeted by a sweet young lady named Connita. She was very helpfull and brought us a refreshing rum punch and called us a porter to help us to our room. We were taken to our reserved Beachside Cabana promptly and the porter was nice and congenial.
OK, the room was lacking in ammenties but we knew this from reading many reviews before we went. The room is old, outdated and only functional. Our window A/C broke on the second night but it wasn't a big deal because the sea breeze was so nice a cool every night we didn't even ask for it to be fixed. The view from the deck was INCREDIBLE! The most beautiful beach I have ever been on.
The beach was great, soft sand, waves and pelicans. The beach is not the best swimming beach because just beyond the shore it is very rockyand the waves can be a bit strong. For swimming I highly recomend either Smuggler's Cove which is just north west of the resort or Cane Garden Bay a few miles east.
I would recomend renting a car for a number of reasons. First, to get to other beachs and general exploration. Second, to get to off resort restaurants as Long Bay's restaurants are not worth the time or money. And third, because it is an adventure driving with the locals, trust me on this one - it's not for the faint of heart or the road rager!
The restaurants on the resort are at best second rate. The staff is not pleasant. They seem to bothered by the fact that they are waiting on tourists. We tried so hard to make eye contact and smile to let them know we just wanted friendly service but it was all to no avial. They just were not interested in being friendly. In addition, the food in my opinion was overpriced. Stay away from the $28.50 buffet. Try other restaurants in the area as they are so much better - staff, price and quality. I recomend CocoPlums, Sebatiens, Banakeet and my favorite spot for breakfast and lunch was Rhymers in Cane Garden. All these restaurants are within 10 minutes of Long Bay.
Lastly, take a charter and explore the other islands. We chartered the White Squall II for $100 per person and had a great time at The Baths and Cooper Island. Drinks, food and gear were all included in the price. The crew, Capt. Chris and Pierce were awesome - so friendly and personable.
All in all our stay at the resort was nice minus the poor staff and poor food. They should do something to improve the attitudes of their employees and update their rooms. I prbably would stay elsewhere if I returned to the island.

On arrival we were told we had an upgraded room to a Junior Jacuzzi Suite - we thought wow! however the room was appalling. On first sight it was dirty, with a rusting wardrobe, broken sliding doors, and very old fashioned and poor quality soft furnishings. It is obvious that we were shifted from our booked room to this "upgrade" as they had either over-booked or something. Granted the view from the room was lovely, but who wants to sit on a dirty balcony with a bunch of gardeners leering at you! Also the showering experience in the jacuzzi tub involved bending your knees and head to get under the lovely rusting showerhead. The tiny "bathroom" had inferior lighting and dubious stains on the wall and the toilet often failed to flush and broke one day.
The staff on reception were rude and indifferent and really couldnt care if we were having a good time or if we were actually there or not. We often felt guilty about asking something - such as taxi bookings, or we would avoid asking altogether if certain staff were on.
On a more positive note some of the food in the restuarants was good (especially some of the fish dishes) and the staff in them were really sweet and seemed to make an effort - especially some of the young men.
Although some of the staff at morning breakfasts were often indifferent and the roosters were far more welcoming and friendly!
Also the actual beach was lovely and very relaxing, although lacked any loungers beyond a small area right next to one of the restaurants.
The other thing that we found frustrating was even though we were on a half board basis, we had to sign for everything! and it was never explained why and so we spent a lot of time worrying what our bill would be at the end (we found out even those on all inclusive did too)
Try elsewhere as this place isnt really worth the money.

Just ended another great vacation at Long Bay Beach Resort. This was our 3rd year in a row. We love Tortola and highly recommend this resort. For those of you considering going as an "All Inclusive", reconsider. There are so many excellent restaurants on the island. You will only have a choice of two if you decide to eat at the resort.

We stayed in a deluxe hillside room. It was very clean, and the view was absolutely incredible. Remember, you're on "island time", so everything moves at a slow pace. We're already looking forward to our stay next year. Suggestion -- go in the winter time. We usually take our vacation in late January/early February, but this year we traveled at the end of April. It was a little hotter than what we were expecting. Have fun and enjoy!!!

My wife and I just got back from a week at Long Bay and we were very pleased overall. We normally like to stay somewhere small and intimate . The resort is in one of the best locations on the island for a number of reasons and the staff and accommodations are first rate.
First , the resort is on the best or one of the best beaches on Tortola. It is also close to another one of Tortola's best beaches ; Smugglers cove . Each beach is great for different reasons. Long bay has waves and is as pretty as any of the pictures that the resort has on the website. As a matter of fact , when my wife and I went to Tortola 2 years ago , we stayed in Cane Garden Bay and drove to Long bay almost every day because it was so much more beautiful. About a mile further west down a dirt road is Smugglers cove. It's a great snorkeling beach and you can rent chairs and have lunch from one of the two beach bars.
The west end is also convenient to Sopers Hole and the west end ferry dock if you plan on visiting any of the other Islands like Jost Van Dyke , Virgin Gorda or St Thomas or St John. Not far from Long bay are a couple of great restaurants like Bananaket ( go at sunset )and the Palms Delight ( order the ginger chicken ).
The resort has a couple of fine restaurants and just about every amenity is offered on site . We did not choose the meal plan because we like to rent a jeep ( use D&D ) and explore and try different restaurants.
Our room was poolside and a little noisy ...both from the pool ( Marko...Polo...Marko...Polo ) and from the paper thin walls. One night we were awoken at 1.00 pm by the conversation in the next room. I think we heard the word " like " 50 times in 10 minutes. Everything settled down though and the Hotel would have switched our room if we needed. For peace and quiet I'd recommend a little further up the hill.
The pool had some issues as well in that It never seemed very clean and the hot tub was broken . The Grill at poolside kept running out of food as well . One day it was the fish , one day it was the chicken and another day they ran out of fries. None of this was enough to ruin our stay .
Long Bay is by far one of , if not the nicest and most complete resorts on Tortola and we would go back in a heartbeat. The area is known for it's surfing and there are miles of small roads and trails for hiking and running. Long Bay has scuba snorkeling , tennis and two car rentals on site.

After reading various reviews on Long bay beach resort I had to write one of my own. The resort is simply wonderful and I could not have asked for more. It has every amenity you possibly could want or need, including a spa, tennis courts, travel services, good restaurants, and extremely clean rooms.
The staff was very helpful and pleasant and the beach was drop dead gorgeous. I don't know why one would complain about this resort except for the fact that they may belong in a chain hotel and can't appreciate a hotel thats low key, simple and beautiful.
