Sugar mill hotel is a nice hotel with good and very clean rooms. It has its own little beach and a swimmingpool. All staff was really friendly. You will need a car to explore the island but driving on Tortola is really easy (you will have to like driving on steep roads though).

The best part of the hotel is the restaurant. We noticed many people come to the Sugar Mill just because of the restaurant, and very rightfully so. It is romantic and service is very very good. But that is nothing compared to the quality of the meals. It is just magic, the chef really prepared some amazingly tastful dishes.you will want to try everything on the menu.... This is a restaurant you won't forget once you have been there. We tried eating elsewhere on Tortola, but only once..nothing can compare to Sugar Mill restaurant!

We had the great pleasure of spending 10 incredible days at the Sugar Mill. We are seasoned travelers and have stayed on most of the islands in the Caribbean over the last 35 years. We chose the MAP plan which worked well for us providing a spectacular breakfast overlooking Apple Bay and dinners in the main dining room, Dinners were outstanding with a variety of selections by their incredible 5 star chef, Bernard. The atmosphere as well as the service was impeccable. We never had to ask for anything....it just came or we were politely asked what we needed. We got to know the managers, Patrick and Sharon who made our stay perfect. Their personal attention to every detail of our stay was amazing for the islands and the level of service surpassed any five star hotel where we have stayed in the past. Sharon came to our table personally every evening to see that everything was wonderful and her staff anticipated every need. I became aware that many of the staff have been there from 13-27 years and it was pleasant to see everyone working together for the benefit of the customer. We ate our lunch at the beautiful outside boutique restaurant which is directly on the water and the food is quite good...everything from delicious fried chicken and seafood to sandwiches and salads. It was so peaceful to sit there on the beautiful water listening to the water lapping on the rocks and experiencing the gentle ocean breezes. There are also a number of beach chairs and tables and we often found ourselves taking a dip before and after lunch. We stayed in a "pool" rental which gave us easy access to the pool and had a great view of the ocean. Our package also included a 3 day car rental and so we took some side trips around the island and into town. One day we took the ferry over to St. John and enjoyed a little shopping. There we so many other things included in our package, Rum, Champagne, sail trip, picnic lunch and a cocktail party by the pool. We enjoyed the sail and seeing some of the other islands in the area. The beauty was...there was a lot to do or there was nothing to do...absolutely no pressure and the wonderful staff took care of every reservation and were extremely helpful, they all have a "can do" attitude. We got to know every person there by name and they knew us making us feel almost like family. We spent some time with other guests to find that many of them were return visitors like Jim & Nancy who have been coming there since the 1980's. Our room was spacious and clean with a small kitchen which came in handy and we had a beautiful outdoor shower. If you are looking for a relaxing island vacation with superior service, a quaint environment and surrounded by lush tropical plants and sparkling caribbean water do yourself a favor and stay at the Sugar Mill. We will definitely be going back. I am a TOP Contributor to TripAdvisor and I give accurate reviews. We have just completed our second stay at the Sugar Mill, taking advantage of the Celebrate! package. The package included a dinner, a couple breakfasts, a rental car for 3 days, a picnic lunch, the Sugar Mill cookbook, and a bottle of champagne and of their rum. We felt very pampered!

Both visits we have stayed in a Pool suite, which provides a comfortable living space with kitchen nook (refrig & micro), a comfortable king bed, and a fabulous outdoor shower. The living space and bedroom run on separate AC units, we cooled just the sleeping area. The view from our deck was of the water out to Jost Van Dyck.

Everything is top notch-linens, furnishings, grounds, pool, the bar and restaurant. Staff are friendly and helpful. Everything was made easy for us, and things run incredibly smoothly. We especially like the West End location, convenient to Sopers Hole and to the ferries to Jost, St. Johns, etc. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing, comfortable, and lovely place to stay, look no further. We'll be back!

We just got home from our first (and hopefully not last!) visit to the Sugar Mill Hotel, and want to share our experience in the hope that a reader looking for a lovely vacation spot will simply look no further.
We began planning the trip quite early, with help from Hillary and Amanda in the business office. We followed most of their suggestions, choosing a package that provided several meals as well as a car-rental; they also assisted us in reserving a sailing/snorkeling outing which was perfect for us.
Our room was bright, clean, well-decorated, and came with a lovely bottle of rum, which we made use of. We had all the conveniences: a refrigerator, coffee-maker, microwave, wifi, a flat-screen tv, and when we felt a little warm and sticky, an air conditioner. We were close enough to the beach to listen to the ocean...what a way to be lulled to sleep! The bathrooms were well-appointed and kept very clean.
Everyone working at the hotel is very pleasant; in fact, I don't remember ever hearing a negative word or seeing a frown. No matter what the request is, it's "no problem". More towels for the beach? Help with opening a window? Never a problem.
The beach is small but lovely and well-maintained, and beach chairs are provided. Lunch is served at a little outdoor cafe, and drinks are available there also. The pool is lovely, but the water was a bit chilly for me; I much perferred the beach!
Now let me talk about the restaurant!!! The food preperation and presentation would not be out of place in a fine NY establishment. The ambience is romantic, and although the room was full of diners, it was not noisy, and the service was not rushed. The hostess and the servers all went out of their way to make the experience a memorably pleasant one.
We met several other vacationers, and were impressed that many of them were "repeat" visitors. We hope we are able to add ourselves to their number. A final "THANK YOU" to Hillary, Amanda, and Patrick.
