We liked this hotel more than other highly rated hotels in St. Maarten and St. Barths because of its walkable access to the beach and "restaurant row" (therefore, no rental car was needed during our rather brief stay). In addition, the staff is great, and from our balcony we could see a) Anquilla, b) other islands, c) the entire curvature of the harbor, and d) the end of the Grand Case airport runway. The room was very comfortable, and the bathroom was more than you would expect in the caribbean (unusual and functional fixtures, tiles, shower) - this place looked newly renovated. The building reminded us of an old mansion on a hill, but inside it is totally up-to-date (for example, there was a screen on the balcony door for a night-time breeze without insects, a ceiling fan, and a great full-sized galley kitchen). It is the sister hotel of Le Petit Hotel, which is an added feature, since Le Petit will let L'Esplanade guests use their sandy beach and lounge chairs/umbrella at no extra cost. While there, we had a very relaxing stay on the beach for several hours, and even ordered a bottle of wine to make it even better. (Hint: when walking between hotels, use the beach rather than the main street, since there are no sidewalks on the street, and the trip is shorter.) We even had a private car (extra charge) to the airport, with a driver booked by the hotel, who knew exactly how to get there quickly. Overall, this was our most comfortable stay in St. Maarten/St.Barths during our 7-day trip.
