“Excellent choice!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2008

It deserves it's #1 TripAdvisor status. Such friendly staff, it was great. A real oasis in a noisy city. Would stay there everytime (if I thought St Martin was worth a revisit!)

Only negative thing I can think of:
- Pool water is too cold for most to enjoy swimming

Be sure to take a 20 minute ferry to Anguilla, it's amazing and worth more time than St Martin, unless you like noise, crowds, and gambling. Was not a fan of the St Martin shopping scene. Some nice stores but the streets just werent that nice to walk around. Sorry.

I personally had a VERY difficult time selecting a hotel in St. Maarten (dutch side) / St. Martin (French side). I did countless searches on all the discount hotel sites (Kayak, Expedia, Orbitz, etc) and all the local hotels looked very run down, while the only chain hotel was extremely over priced. I personally have status at Starwood properties and am somewhat of a self-proclaimed hotel snob, often staying at 5 star hotels. After reading the reviews of L'Esplanade on Trip Advisor, I decided to go with it. I couldnt find discount rates so I paid full price, and went through the hotel directly. They do require a full deposit at the time of booking and 45 days cancellation notice. You pay service and tax (And other charges at check out).

I was booking the trip for my husband (very picky) and another couple (also very picky) and was quite nervous about arriving at the hotel. Thankfully everyone was extremely happy with the hotel (views, upkeep, cleanliness, staff, etc). Wish they had room service, but that was the only negative. When you are driving from the airport, it seems quite far and the neighborhood seems "shady" until you get to the base of the hotel; but Grand Case is a cute little area that you can walk to from the hotel. here are my comments:

- If you are deciding between Le Petit Hotel (sister hotel) and L’Esplanade, go with L’Esplanade. I walked by Le Petit and its not nearly as nice as L’Esplanade, even though its “on the beach”, which it is, there is just not a great beach near it

- Restaurant “Zen It” (walking distance from hotel) is expensive for lunch but does offer breakfast (one of the few in the area) (Grand Case)

- Restaurant “Spiga” is actually extremely good, as all the other posts indicate (Grand Case)- definitely worth going to at least one night instead of "exploring" to find a different restaurant. Not open for breakfast

- Restaurant “Blue Martini” is very good and also offers hookahs (Grand Case)

- Don’t bother going to the Grand Case Beach. Its extremely tiny. Its worth it to drive to one of the other beaches - I liked Orient and Happy Bay. Wanted to go to Pinel Island but didnt stay long enough to get out there.

- The pool is very clean and very cute. The “hot tub” doesn’t actually get hot though, which would have been nice. There is a bar next to the pool, but it is not a swim up bar.

- Our room was recently renovated (room 17, deluxe studio) and was in perfect condition and had very nice décor. The rooms came with a bottle of water and some tea/coffee and some cookies, which was great to get us started. Our friends stayed in Room 10, deluxe loft and it was huge, but not recently renovated. It was also very amazing

- Hotel does not have room service; Hotel staff is very helpful with reservations and accommodations - they helped us tremendously with calling for dinner reservations / recommendations and with calliing to make reservations for various appointments, car rental, etc. They do leave for the night around 9pm though

- Internet is free in the rooms but not wireless. It is extremely slow but it does work. There is also a shared computer in the lobby. We brought our laptop to download photos and also were able to get online in the room, but it was too slow to get on for too long - not a huge issue, because there is plenty else to do on the island! Did help with looking up activities though

- There is a security guard who works until 2am

- There is a foot path down to Grand Case that is a very easy 5 minute trek by foot.

- The hotel is up on a mountain so there are amazing views of the sea and of the town – all rooms have these views. All rooms also have balconies

- There are English TV channels and everyone speaks English

- The hotel safe is very small (ie. Would not fit your laptop or large camera, but will fit your cell phones, jewelry, passports, etc)

- There is a full working kitchen which makes it nice to make coffee, tea, etc. Maybe even breakfast if you are there long enough

- There is a small convenient store right next to Zen It in Grand Case where you can buy water, drinks, alcohol, snacks, toiletries, etc.

We have just spent 10 glorious days as the first guests to stay in L'Esplanade's spectacular villa perched high above the hotel.

Sweeping views, an open floor plan and a private pool greeted us as the friendly and efficient L'Esplanade staff escorted us to the villa. The fully equipped kitchen made cooking and entertaining easy, and having daily maid service made us feel like we were staying in the hotel. In fact we had all the privacy we wanted while still having complete support from the Esplanade staff. Staying in the villa offered us the palette and inspiration to create a unique and imaginative experience.

Make a reservation, book a flight and have a great time!

L'Esplanade is a gorgeous boutique hotel, but the service is less than savory. Any time we called the front desk to ask a question, the person who picked up (one of them being Philomena, a manager), seemed as if we were inconveniencing them. They were curt and unfriendly. There was another young lady who checked us in, and she was far from welcoming. We expected her to tell us more about the hotel and surrounding area; unfortunately she seemed disinterested and lazy. Hopefully this review will change their negative attitude.

I must note that there was one man that brought our bags to our room and was extremely helpful and enthusiastic that we were staying with L'Esplanade. And Alain, the bartender at the pool, was the friendliest person at the hotel. He took the time to talk to us, tell us about St. Martin, and made some amazing drinks to boot! The housekeeping was excellent. Our room was always impeccably clean.

The hotel is in a good location, just a short walk away from restaurant row. Stand outs for us were L'Hibiscus and Spiga. Definitely grab some BBQ at one of the Lolos, and watch the sunset at Calmos Cafe.

Make sure you bring lots of cash -- there are VERY FEW ATMs on the island, and the one closest to the hotel was broken.

What can I say, i was a little worried booking it myself versus a travel agent, but from the beginning the staff was warm and accomendating. They even booked all our dinner reservations for us which were perfect. Upon arriving no hassel warm and welcoming to us took us directly to our room which was gorgeous just like the pictures a welcome basket with bread, cookies, coffee tea and a bottle of champagne. This was the first vacation that I never had to call the desk to complain that there was a problem. The maid service was the best I have ever had and I travel alot. The view is to die for every morning with my coffee out on the balcony and looking at the view puts you in the best of moods for the whole day. We met the owners at a welcome party an they are lovely. We tried this versus a big name hotel and it was perfect. Quiet, stressfree vacation. i will return again and tell everyone how great this trip was.

This hotel was booked based upon the glowing reviews on this site, and it was actually better than expected. Everything is very nice, with balcony's in every room overlooking the bay. Service was fantastic, providing a free bottle of champaigne for our honeymoon.

Within walking distance to over 20 brilliant restaurants. Be sure to hit up Calmos Cafe during the day, relaxing on the beach and then having a great lunch.

  • Liked — Everything, service, room, pool, access to beach
  • Disliked — Be prepared to walk a half mile to the restaurants, as parking is difficult
