On our recent and first trip to St. Martin, we chose from among the best restaurants on the island to celebrate our vacation. We chose Bistro Caraibes, largely because of the impressive culinary backgrounds of the owner brothers. Wow. Did we ever hit it big. We enjoyed one of the best restaurant meals ever.
The restaurant, located on Main Street in Grand Case, in the middle of restaurant row, is beautiful in it’s soft mauve tones and subtle French farmhouse décor.
Bistrot Caraibes is almost classically perfect. Beautiful small, uncrowded tables with upscale china, flatware and crystal. The small kitchen executes traditional French items to perfection with the fresh local ingredients. One starter, the eggplant bavarois with crab was delicious as was a entre fish soup loaded with chunks of local fish. A guest had a perfectly poached fish with the silkiest beurre blanc. Absolutely delicious. Maybe next time we’ll select our dinner from the large lobster tank at the front entrance. The nougat glace and profiterole glace, complete with a not-too-thick chocolate sauce were a perfect ending to our special meal. The wine list is extensive and fairly priced.
In addition to the beautiful cooking, what really makes this place special is the “island perfect” service. The room staff, including the brothers Amaury and Thibault, is small but jovial, attentive, and controlled. It was some of the most appropriate service we’ve had anywhere. Everyone dining that night was so relaxed and happy. You feel like they were really glad you were dining with them.
This will not be out last trip to St. Martin and, to be sure, we will eat again at Bistrot Caraibes. We’ve already given it glowing recommendations to all of our friends and family headed for the island.
