“The Villas at Simpson Bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Was there Oct 2012. Clean, beautiful view. Will be going again this Oct 2013. Love the island, food at all restaurants wonderful. Will keep returning. Wonderful people on the island. I have been going since 1996 and husband since 1986. The island has built up alot through the years and traffic is an issue. I always go off season so I cannot imagine traffic during high season. Rumors that resort may be taken over by Hard Rock but nothing offical yet. Casino is a lot of fun and keep seeing same travelers every year. Not sure how i feel about the rumors. We will see!

Room Tip: Rent a car and explore the island during the day.

Great stay in a large safe location right by the airport and main street in Simpson Bay with lots of restaurants. We had a huge room/apartment overlooking the ocean that I booked on expedia. We were in one of the B buildings which was mid way up the hill. I had two kids and my mom with me and we always were able to make it up and down without issue. There was lots of parking for our rental. The towel hut was just outside the building so it was convenient to get towels in the morning. The room had an entrance hall way, a large bedroom with a king bed, a full kitchen with bar stool seating, a dinette, a sofa living room area and a large balcony with table chairs and a lounge chair. There were lots of pools, all over the resort but they were very cold and one of them was a bit dirty. The big ones have restrooms nearby and on our last day we were able to store luggage with concierge and take shower at the gym shower. There are a lot of restaurants on site plus a small grocery store (there is a larger grocery store right down the street because with the full kitchen and all extras included (dishes, pots etc) you could cook instead of going out every night which can get expensive. Although the restaurants were busy, the food was good but their service was even better. Wished they had more entertainment during the day but since there is so much to discover on the island wasn't too bad. Also maid service is not every day, I think it is twice a week but there were items like broom and mop to clean up in between, I didn’t mind. I would recommend this place and would stay again. I am going to post to the St. Martin Forum a trip report with more info about the island shortly.

This resort has just been renovated and everything id brand new. The design is great and the face lift was done beautifully. The resort offers everything that you could imagine.
I'll be back there soon and try to leave another update. Great job!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a newly renovated room. Not all are complete yet.

I stayed here over NYE and the rooms are gross. The bathrooms are old and run down as well as the kitchen. The furniture including the bed is old and worn. The biggest disappointment was the room smelled of awful must and mildew. I changed my room the minute I walked into it. They changed it with no issues but the problem was that my new room had the same mildew smell. The resort itself is located in a great area. The views are amazing and the staff was helpful and pleasant, especially the front desk staff. The bartender Andrew at Bon Appetite, a resturant on the property, was fabulous. It is well worth visiting the resturant, the food is great and Andrew makes great drinks. The beach is small but the water is great and the view is amazing. If you don't expect much from your room then you will enjoy your time here. If you are looking for a hotel this is not the place to be. They DO NOT service your room at all. They don't turn down the beds nor do they bring new towels or clean the room while you are there. Keep room expectations low and location expectations high and you will have fun.

Room Tip: Stay away from the B units.

Dear Guest:

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. Your comments are very important and help us serve you better.

I'm happy to read that you enjoyed the service provided by our staff, I will pass along your compliments to management to reward them for a job well done. I'm also glad to read that you enjoyed the views and the surroundings. Regarding the room issues you mention, I offer you a sincere apology on behalf of Simpson Bay Resort; we are hard at work renovating all units and while many of them are brand new now, there are still some waiting to be renovated. I hope you give us the chance of welcoming you back in the future to accommodate you in one of our renovated units.

We appreciate your feedback and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

It's at a great location in the middle of Simpson Bay, near restaurants, cafes and bars there, plus the hotel is part of a complex with several pools and restaurants and a casino there. The problem is that the staff doesn't clean the room much, maybe 1-2 times a week and you have to ask for extra towels and toiletries as such. Nice set up though.

I'm glad to read that you enjoyed our facilities and surroundings, thank you for the kind compliments. Regarding room cleaning, service is provided depending on length of your stay and day of your arrival; as you correctly mention it can be done either once or twice a week, however you can always request additional cleaning services for a fee at front desk.

We appreciate your feedback and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

We did a time-share exchange, but after reading many negative reviews of the building we would have been in, we decided to upgrade. We were charged an enormous amount to do this but since we already had bought our airline tickets we went ahead with it. Unfortunately, the people you deal with about any matters concerning the property are located in Mexico! They were only minimally familiar with the hotel so even though we asked for an ocean view, we only got an ocean "peak". We tried to change to a better room when we got there, but apparently there was nothing available.
So the bad was having to pay so much extra money just to get a decent unit and then not even getting the view we had hoped for.
The good was that the resort itself is on the bay, has many lovely pools, beautiful views, and restaurants right on the property. The walk into town is pretty short, and there are many good restaurants all around (Crave, Lee's, Oceanfront). Also there is a wonderful gelato place within walking distance (Carousel).
The ugly is that many of the people who work there are just plain rude. Whenever we wanted to use a tennis court, we would have to go to the security office, and they always acted as if that was the last place they wanted to be. Also, some of the tennis courts are in awful condition. Lastly, it's very near the airport, and the noise of the planes taking off so frequently disturbed the relaxing atmosphere.
Having said that, most of the staff was very friendly - especially the housekeepers - and we did end up having a great vacation.
We would go back to St. Maarten, but probably not back to Simpson Bay.

Room Tip: I think rooms in the Villas are probably the best - and most expensive. If we went back we would sta...

It is a large property, and has many pools. Easy access to the beach, as well as a dock and ladder straight to the ocean. The bartendar was friendly and they run a happy hour so the drinks arent too pricey. The hotel for a noninclusive is a bit steep, but I really enjoyed staying here. It is a great location to the airport, and several eateries. It has a full kitchen, a grocery, casino, playground, and shuttle to and from your villa. The only down fall is they couldnt find our reservation. We went to swim while we waited 2 hours later they had forgotten about us and still had to find the reservation.
