"Heaven on Earth"...that's what we think of Beachside Villas....very convenient to private beach and pool, excellent staff and services, richly appointed, comfortable, and quiet (actually the airport activity adds to the charm and becomes less and less noticable as the vacation progresses). I would recommend this location to anyone! We actually began staying here over 12 years ago, and have come back again and again! We have stayed at various other Caribbean islands and find St. Maarten very friendly and safe, compared to some of our other destinations. Take advantage of the owners recommendations for restaurants, etc. They KNOW what is tops on the island!

My husband and I stayed there for our honeymoon. Its been three years but we are planning another trip there and I had to write a review. We weren't bothered by the airplanes at all. The bumpy road was no big deal either. Its a rental car right? We had everything we needed. Clean linens, full kitchen, BBQ grill, the beach steps away. The whole place was very clean. The maid staff even washed our dishes. We told her it wasn't necessary, but she smiled and said she didn't mind. Irene even booked reservations at a fancy restaurant for us. I believe it was in Cupecoy-fabulous! And the shopping!!!! You can find GREAT deals on diamonds at Phillipsburg. This was by far the best place we have ever been to. Its yet to be beat. We will come back again and again. Don't believe all of the airport stuff. Its not bad at all.

Loved everything about Beachside villas. I have been an airline employee for over 21 years. Needless to say, I have traveled alot and stayed in many types of accomodations. Beachside has thought of everything. One could walk into the villa and live there. Every detail has been thought of. Walking into the villa is walking into your own private paradise. The decor is beautiful and your own private deck is only feet from the ocean. Keep your slider open at night and feel the wonderful breeze while the ocean lulls you to sleep. The beach towels provided are better than any resort I have ever stayed at ....even the room towels are on par with the best of hotels.....you cannot go wrong at the Beachside villas.....The manager on duty is excellant...all your needs will be taken care of promptly.....the only downfall for some will be the airplane noise. I did not find it bothersome at all...however being with the airlines might play a factor...the noise is not bad at night and most of the day you will be at other beaches. A short walk down the beach will put you right at the runway where you can watch the planes take off....most find this fascinating rather than annoying....Yolanda, the owner has made the villas your carribean home away from home...

As with many people, we we're slow in writing this review having stayed at Beachside Villas 9 months ago but now as we begin to plan our second visit we remembered that we wanted to let the world know what a wonderful piece of paradise the villas are to this island. After many trips south to numerous hot spots and Caribbean islands we have found our place in St.Maarten and especially our new home away from home, the Beachside Villas. Our trip was very late in planning due to a last minute decision to treat ourselves after a long recovery my wife endured after a bad operation. Right from the start Yolanda went above and beyond to make our late plans come to life and within less than 2 weeks we arrived in SXM with our 2 kids, 4yrs old and 6 months. Irene gave us everything we needed for the baby, crib, playpen, highchair and even a stroller with roof because ours didn't have one to protect our baby from the powerful sun. She set us up with a rental car, delivered to the property, gave us messages from home to see if we were ok and even supplied toys and floaties for the pool for our oldest daughter. Upon arrival there were ice cold drinks in our fridge, spotless rooms bigger than we ever imagined and smiles from all the staff. When the gardener found out our 4yr old loved flowers he cut her one everyday for her hair and showed us how to spot the iguanas in the trees. The pool was perfect and clean and on the beach!!! The beach is perfect and clean and right out your bedroom and dining room door!!! The villas are near the end of the beach just before an incredible and beautiful set of natural cliffs with great snorkeling and ensuring privacy and little foot traffic on the white sand beach. Towards the other direction is open beach for 3 miles completely beautiful.Even with 2 small children this was the perfect place for us with the accomodations top notch and spacious, gardens and beach just beautiful and all the staff genuine and caring and always helpful. These people are happy to work there and they are excellent at what they do.

As far as the airplanes, we thought it was it was one of the neatest things we have ever seen! The ocean is louder than the planes believe it or not plus the main traffic occurs during the afternoon and there is little activity at nighttime. Some nights we slept with windows open and the waves kept us up!! Not a bad problem to have. For us, the novelty of the planes was fun and we had no problem with it, in fact our 4yr old was sleeping through the jets during her nap without stirring.

We would definately recommend Beachside Villas to anyone who enjoys a quiet beach, immaculate accomodations, and helpful staff willing to do whatever it takes to accomodate you.
One last item that is good to know, the market is only 10 minutes walk and they have everything you may want. Also many bars, restaurants and shops very nearby as well.

We hope to be back soon!!

“Beachside Villas: Airport can be a Big Deal”

Beachside Villas

Mar 28, 2005

My family and I just returned from a week at the Beachside Villas and felt it was important to provide prospective vacationers with our personal opinion on the experience. I’ve read the other reviews here and have to say that in terms of the property, the units, the beach, the landscaping and the wonderful attitude of the staff, all of it is true. It would be hard to find a better place for our family to spend a wonderful week on the beach with the exception of the airport.

We chatted with several other renters, some of whom are repeat guests, and asked them what they thought of the airport and the noise that’s created by living 100 yards from the main runway. The repeat guests seem to take it in stride. Having dozens of commercial and corporate jets landing and taking off daily seems to be an attraction to some while others ignore it. But we felt it was beyond acceptable for our taste. It may just be us, but when we arrived on a recent Saturday afternoon we were greeted with the outrageous roar of 757 and 747 jets at a rate of several an hour landing and taking off until 11 PM that night. It was so bad we spent much of Sunday driving around the island looking for alternate accommodations. Our efforts were to no avail since all the real estate agents are closed on Sunday and we were there in the midst of high season, a bad time to try to find something for seven people.

We were told that Saturday is the noisiest; with a dozen large jets bring in time share owners. That makes for a dozen landings and a dozen take offs on top of the dozen or so regularly scheduled large jets from American, Delta, US Airways, Air France, KLM, etc. that land and take off. Each aircraft constitutes a landing and a take off. That’s two opportunities to stop conversation among guests. I can’t tell you how many times I couldn’t hear someone two feet away from me because the noise overwhelmed the conversation.

Please keep in mind that when the big ones throw their jet thrusters into reverse stopping can be just as noisy as taking off. And you might want to disregard any comments you see in other reviews about this being some kind of quaint small island airport. This airport is handing huge commercial aircraft. They are big, they burn a lot of fuel and they make a heck of a lot of noise. In addition to the large commercial and charter flights coming and going, there are numerous corporate jets taking off and landing throughout the day. It should be noted that corporate jet engine noise is not regulated by the FAA while the commercial aircraft are, and for their size they are plenty noisy! Throw in a bunch of small island hoppers and you’ve got a teaming airport runway less than a football field away from your unit. When we asked the owner how close we were to the airport she told us we were a fifteen minute drive away. This is true. It takes the cab approximately fifteen minutes to drive from the terminal to the end of the runway and to circle back to the point where the Beachside Villas is located. As the bird flies, it would take one minute to slowly cross the airport property to your unit and only 5 – 10 seconds from the runway. We heard from another guest that he was told the exact same 15 minute explanation. True? Yes. Misleading, certainly. The villas are located just about where the jets lift off, providing the maximum amount of noise for us. The number of flights does drop off after Sunday, but there are still a substantial amount of takeoffs and landings every day from 7 AM to 11 PM. And my wife says she heard a couple of corporate jets taking off around 2 AM. The beachside bedrooms are noisy, but the backside – toward the airport – bedrooms are thunderous. No, wait. All the rooms are thunderous; it’s just a matter of scale. A couple of guests said they kept the windows closed and the air conditioning running. But we like to feel tropical breezes wafting over us as we sleep and we really appreciate the sound of the waves on the beach all night long.

When you take into consideration the joy and pleasure of keeping your doors and windows open during your stay, we were very luck while we were there in that the trade winds were blowing in from the south, which pretty much kept the smell of jet fuel out of our noses. But there may be times when the winds are blowing toward the complex and delivering the smell of airport solvents. I don’t know what the impact would be, but if it’s happening and it impacts your week of vacation, it would be a big deal.

What’s this all mean? My kids didn’t care. They loved the proximity to the beach, the nearby shopping district and the villa itself. But my wife and I found the pervasive noise to be an incredible irritant and distraction. Would I recommend the property? Again, we met several guests who go their every year and really like it, so for some this must be ideal. But I’d only recommend this to those who are not looking for a quiet, peaceful beachside experience. For us? As nice as all the “good stuff” was, we’ll be looking elsewhere next year.
