“Wonderful retreat directly on the beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2011

What would one need to have a great holiday?
Sun: check!
Beach: check!
Wonderful accommodation: double check!

After years of visiting (among others) Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire we decided to give Sint Maarten a chance. Boy, did we hit the jackpot!
As we are a family with a boy of 2,5 (and one in the oven, so to speak), hotels don't always fit our bill. We like to set our own pace, have privacy and even do some cooking during our vacations. Hotels can provide this sometimes, but a place of our own always seems to be better in place for us. So the search began... Flights were booked easily, also because there is only one real option from The Netherlands. So KLM would take us in 9 hours directly to SXM. Always good and very convenient, little expensive but we knew that.

Onward to the accommodation. Touroperaters have little to offer, apart from the (small) selection of hotels, so that wouldn't help us very much. After some searching we came across the website of beachsidevillas.com. And it looked very promising! We knew that we would be visiting the island during off season, even during hurricane season for that matter. So I mailed the (American) owners with my questions (and request for a price quote), which was answered very promptly and -more important- very friendly. No feeling of being a number whatsoever! Got a good price (we got basically the second bedroom for free) and made the reservation. As this is a smaller, privately owned property we had to transfer the amount due to the USA instead of paying by credit card or on site. This caused a little anxiety as we were paying somebody a rather fair amount of dollars, without knowing them. But the way of communicating by Yolanda made us feel assured.

So what did we get?
A small resort (14 villas) directly on the beach! The season made that the beach was small, that's nature. But still, enough to enjoy and built a lot of castles.
At arrival, the wonderful manager welcomed us in a very pleasant way and made sure we could acclimate fast. Even some cold beverages were already in our fridge!
I believed I made a reservation for a car rental, but the company didn't show up at the airport so we had to arrange something different. Marv (the manager) arranged that within 30 minutes a rental was in front of our villa at a great rate. Top notch service.

The villa itself was great. We got number 14, which is at the end of the row and directly at the pool. As we were the only guests during the greater part of our stay, we had virtually a private pool (and beach). The interior of the villa is caribean style and very well equipped. The bedrooms have a good AC, the beds are among the best I have had outside my own (and I travel a lot), the kitchen has everything you could possible need (and more), there is a barbecue and best of all: a veranda directly on the beach. The furniture, kitchen equipment (toaster, coffee maker, oven, cocktail blender, BIG fridge, lots of china, etc.) are all in great condition, it proves that the owners and management really want to have people a good stay, otherwise you don't bother that much. Did I mention that all villas have WiFi (free!)? A stay at a lot of 4/5 star hotels and they don't even have it (or charge big bucks). TV has the large US networks and even a video/DVD player is available).

We didn't bring beach toys and that was the right choice as the have a complete arsenal of toys, air beds, etc. to enjoy. That saves up some space in your suitcases!
At the reception they have a great selection books, so you don't need to bring them yourself.

During our stay our main activity was doing nothing. With a kid that sleeps in the afternoon and a pregnant wife activities a limited. But we enyojed it. Little swimming, sunbathing and reading with a cold beverage overlooking the water. Sounds good and it was.

We visited Phillipsburg two times, went to Marigot market (got some great fish at an even better price for the bbq), did the Zoo and went to Orient Beach. But why travel to another beach when you have one at three feet from your home?

For us, a dutch people, it was odd that almost nobody speaks dutch on Sint Maarten. After all it is dutch. At least officially. I believe our English is good enough, so no problems there, but still it's odd. The restaurant scene is also very much orientated on the american taste/likes but in general good. Shopping is heaven as the dutch side is completely tax-free.

All together, it was a great stay and think that everybody would enjoy Beachside Villas.
So no remarks? Well, there are -beside the pool and beach- no activities for children. And as we were the only guests at the time we visited, I don't know how it would be around the pool if all villas are occupied. Still I believe it would be good..

One thing: yes it is directly beside the airport. And yes, you do hear the airplanes landing and taking off (plane spotting heaven). But in the evening only the smaller planes land and at night there is no activity. If you close the windows, you can hardly even hear it. The surf gives more noise :-)

We just returned from our third trip to Villa #14 at Beachside Villas. This time it was my retirement trip and we were lucky enough to stay for three weeks. When we arrived, we wondered why it took us so long to return. It is amazing to be just steps from the beach and have the waves lull us to sleep each night. (You can't get that in a highrise!) When I read some of the reviews, it was interesting to read the complaints. I don't think it is listed as a resort full of amenities and activities. The writers should have done their homework if that is what they wanted. We wanted to be close to the water and that is what we got even if ( God forbid we had to wash our dishes!) As for the planes, we never got tired of watching them land and take off and I don't remember having to stop a conversation or loosing sleep because of them. The second week there, our daughters arrived in our villa and our friends came to villa #13. This was our friends first time here and they fell in love with it also.We loved our cookouts together. The staff is the best ever, always willing to help with anything. When you stay at a resort, the staff doesn't even know you. It was nice to have personal contact. Being here during the slow season, we usually had the pool to ourselves and walked the beach every day and saw only four or five people. One of our favorite places to eat, was Karacters, right down the beach where we ate delicious gourmet food with our toes in the sand. There are also many other delicious places to eat to choose from. A rental car is a must. If you want your amenities, activities, crowds and elevators to the beach, go elsewhere, but if you want a beautiful home on the beach looking at white sand and beautiful water steps away....this is the place to go. We will be back!

When we arrived, the view through the living room into the rear sliding glass doors was amazing BUT your dream vacation stops there. My guess is that this was THE place in the 70's to go for your St. Martin vacation, but is considered outdated and lacking many modern ammenities by today's standards.

When we arrived, we couldn't figure out why each room had flashlights-more on that later. When you walk in, there's a lobby area that has no roof, so the rain and mosquitos are able to access the entire villa. Each bedroom has screens that are broken and have gaps, so the mosquitos love to sneak through the holes and bite you at night.

Probably one of the worst parts of the Beachside Villas is the location. You are literally 50 yards from some of the largest airplanes on earth. From about 7a-11p, the airplanes are screaming...and I mean screaming every 10 minutes or so. It's one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean. The entire villa would shake and you could barely hear the other person talking in the room. The cable TV would even go out when some of the larger planes flew in. So, don't expect to sleep or get any naps throughout the entire day. We were so desperate to get some naps in during the day, we went to nearby beaches to escape the pounding noise.

Each room had AC, but the common areas didn't. The villa has a rustic vintage kitchen and sink with no dishwasher, so you are left to srubbing dishes if you want to eat in your villa multiple times during the day.

When we arrived back one night from trying to escape the constant airplane noise, the entire property was without power. It was really strange because neighboring properties did have power. So, the security guard (I hesitate to call him a security guard)-guy with a billy club-walked us to our villa with a flashlight. We then went to our rooms at 7p with no electricity and no AC. That's where the flashlights come in. They must have frequent power outages here because the flashlights in each room seemed to be a permanent addition.

No resort activities, rusting facades, and peeling paint on the beach side topped off this unforgettable vacation.

Stay away from this place and enjoy your St. Martin in peace and relaxation at a different hotel.

Room Tip: They all have the same view of the loud airport runway and beautiful ocean. It's the best of bo...

We spent 2 weeks at Beachside villas and had possibly the best vacation of our lives. We have travelled extensively in the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii. This was our favorite vacation. The villa was perfect for two couples. It was clean, well cared for and the owners and staff couldnt have been nicer. Yes, you are absolutely at the airport but flights stop when it gets dark and start around 8 in the morning. We enjoyed watching the huge jumbo jets land and take off as we floated in the pool.
Cant wait to go back.

-You must know that these villas are literally right next to the airport runway. Our view from the bedroom window was the planes on the runway. St Maarten's airport is the second busiest in the Caribbean (behind Puerto Rico's) and there are planes coming in and out from 7am-11pm very frequently. This means you can sleep between 11p-7am. No more than 8 hrs of sleep, which isn't my definition of relaxation.
-There are also birds that start screaming at 6am. So, between the plane engines absolutely roaring outside your window and shaking the house when they take off, it's difficult to sleep and relax.
-I would absolutely never stay here again. In fact, we almost switched after the first day, but it was all prepaid. We were so desparate for sleep, we were almost willing to pay anything to escape the runway noise. My wife and I were concerned about all of the jet fuel fumes that we could smell coming through the windows that didn't fully close in our bedroom
-The windows and screen doors didn't fully close, which meant we were constantly swatting mosquitoes.
-No air conditioning except for the bedrooms. Additionally, only 2/3 of the rooms had working a/c.
-The only redeeming quality of this place is the view of the ocean. You walk down the stairs from your deck and it is 5 feet away.
-They claimed to have wifi. Ours never worked, but we were able to access the owners' villa's wifi (villa #6). Very strange that the owners' worked but ours did not.
-The power went out one night. This meant trying to fall asleep with extreme heat and humidity, in complete darkness with jet fumes wafting in from the windows that you had to open

We stayed at Beachside Villa. I found it in the travel section of the paper and called. It was 8 of us and we had 2 sidebyside 2 bed room villas. We met Yolanda. Her staff was wonderful---very helpful as was some of the other guess that we met. The villas were well kept and the water was so calming and the planes (what planes) did not bother us at all. Lets not forget the cab drivers, especially Glenn. Everyone was so nice and helpful. until next time.

I happened upon the Beachside Villas while on-line and requested a brochure. The brochure was invaluable in providing information on the villas plus local restaurants, excursions, car rental procedures etc. Arrival at the villas was quick - it is right beside the airport which did not bother us (it was a bit noisy on the "streetside" of the units - not a big deal). The villas were large, spotless and the view from the porch of Simpson Bay was breathtaking. The staff members were great and informative concerning their island. Food in restaurants was similarly priced to Canada and good quality. We rented a car which is a necessity. It easy to navigate the island. Do Not hesitate to vacation here - I hope to be a repeat guest now that I have found what I think is the best spot on the island for sand, sun and beautiful ocean blue water. Excellent vacation location
