Pelican Resort, St. Maarten/St. Martin, Caribbean
Date July 13-20, 2008
We stayed here 8 years ago and found it just perfect! WE returned on this trip and found that the service, especially at the front desk has gone down dramatically. When we checked in they told us there may not be a lock for the lock box, but not to worry there would be locks that are going to be turned in. They wrote our room # B124 down and said to check back in the morning. We of course did but there were no locks turned in for us to use. Meanwhile all day/night we had to carry our personal belongings with us. (Beach, pool, dinner, etc) When we followed up they still did not to seem it was important. Almost three days into it and 4 phone calls later (From us)They installed a digital safe. All the $$$$ they put into the new Marina residence's and they could not have a lock for out personal belongings
The room stunk of I don't know what. Mold, cigarettes, dirty A/C filter.
The blender was cracked and when I asked for a new one. It came hours later all sticky! The room was so smelly we had to buy a scented candle to light up every time we either came in or were hanging around YUK! The cabinets in the bath were nasty on the inside. When we wanted to checkout my husband asked about the complimentary room and the front desk had no clue what room it was going to be. That is so not right. Our flight was not until 3:00pm and we had to be out by 10:00 am and they had no idea what room was their complimentary room. ( What a joke)
Lastly and the most important is that my husband and I were bitten by bed bugs, yup that is correct.
WE both have numerous bites on our feet, legs and ankles. They are painful and it has turned me off is such a way. Grosses me out!!!
I think they are concerned more about the new construction - trying to get old owners to buy new and are letting the older buildings go.
By any means this is not what it use to be. We love St Maarten and would return, but the pelican is out of the question.
They really need to exterminate this resort ASAP.

the pelican has a great location at simpson bay, close to everything. there are many pools and a nice beach. there is a convenience store, piano bar and casino at resort.

the units are old and need remodeling. ours was a dark green inside, kind of dark and dreary. we had a view of a parking deck.
the unit was spacious and clean and everything worked well.
overall we prefered the flamingo and oyster bay to this resort.

we love st. maarten and go there again and again. great beaches, food, plenty of nightlife. rent a car for your trip and see the whole island.

“Nasty check-in personnel”

Pelican Resort

We stayed in a one bedroom unit with a great view. All of the facilities were very nice. Unfortunately, the check in process ruined all the nice things. Our name was on the reservation, but the address and other info was all wrong. The attendent was surly and acted like it was our fault. Finally got cards to the unit and found other people were already staying there. A different surly attendent had the wrong address etc. even though we spent time correcting the data in the computer. We had to return to the check in desk two other times and every time faced unhappy, unfriendly and downright nasty attendents.

“Read This One Dont Listen To Bad Reviews”

Pelican Resort

Dec 9, 2007

Okay first off I wanted to say anyone who is bitching about this place is probably just a stuck up rich snob and ignorant anyways. We red the reviews and wondered if we should go here and wow am I ever glad we did go. YOu cant listen to the bad reviews because the people that write the bad reviews probably NOTHING can make them happy in their sad lives anyways.
We got there nice and fast from airport and for 4 people it was $17. For check in there was quite a few people but they had drinks for us while we waited very nice staff and the check in was easy. Even though our room was close by they drove us there anyways and we walked in our room and LOVED it. Our room was a nice surprise because it was right ocean front with a nice balcony on ground level that was right on the beach. The room was very clean and had a safe in the room. Also there was plenty of dishes and a blender to mix strawberry Daiquiris. Me and my friend got the pull out bed and mom and dad had a full separate room to sleep in with great air condition. The pull out bed was very comfy as well.
We went to both the grocery stores on site and they were both good prices.
There are also 5 pools on this resort which we didnt use because the BEACH was amazing it wasnt busy it was kinda like our own little area very clear water and nice and relaxing.
We had free internet service everyday mon-fri, 9-4 so that was really nice to keep in touch back home.
We went on four excursions the first night we did the sunset booze cruise and that was $10 and all you can drink lots of fun. The next one we did which I recommend to everyone is Zip Ligning it was about 30 minutes away and at the time there was 32 obstacles and they were making more as we were there. Mom took pictures and videoed while the 3 of us did it what a fun experience it was. It also was only 45.00. We also after that went to Orient Beach which everyone talks about personally I liked our beach much better, if you want to do any water sports or if you like busy go there. We went parasailing and you can wheel and deal for the price we did. Also we went on an excursion that was sea doo boats and it took us on a 2 hour tour very rough water because it was wavy that day and the snorkeling was very nice lots of fish.
The best place we ate at was Pineapple Petes we actually ate there 3 nights very friendly staff and great food and prices. We also ate at Boathouse good food but you have to like sea food cause the menu is mostly that. Also ate at toppers very good there as well.
We rented a car because it was much cheaper to do it that way then to get taxis everywhere I definately recommend that. It is crazy driving but I think almost everyone around there is in rentals. You need to have an aggresive driver for sure. There was lots to do around this resort as well.
Watch out for the stray doggies as well some arent so smart but a lot are pretty good.
One of the days we went to sunset beach it was really neat becuse that is where the planes fly over your head and almost hit you its awesome for taking pictures and is only 5 minutes away. Also there on Wednesday nights at a bar called Bamboo Bernies it is ladies night get in free and drink for free I had a lot of rum punches and if you tip 1.00 each time you will get served before everyone else its awesome! We danced the night away that night lots of fun, itis outside as well.
The only bad thing that happened on the entire trip was the day we left we didnt know to be there 3 hours early and we were there 1 hour before take off. The lady at counter said they were closed and we couldnt get on our flight so we asked for a manager and she was so RUDE and unwilling to help us she kept saying oh well your fault you have to rebook another flight and she was not willing to help us at all and walked away. Meanwhile this whole time they were processing another guy right in front of to go on our flight that was also there late but not as late as us. So we did get help from a very nice man from Spirit and he must of been looking for us for about 4 hours for cheaper flights and he did get us discount even though the rude girl said no discount off next flight he ended up turning what could have been a 1200 flight home to 70.00 a person, we were so thankful but so exhausted from the rude manager that wouldnt help us, so the next day we were 5 hours early and everything went smoothly for us to go home. Sad lesson learned so be early on departure because they will not help you no matter what you do.
All in all wonderful time and I cant wait to take my husband there, I loved it.

“Convenient and okay place to stay.”

Pelican Resort

Nov 11, 2007
4/5 found this review helpful

We stayed at the Pelican Resort from November 3 until the 10th. Overall it was a good stay and conveniently located. A couple things that were unpleasant was the LONG check in on Saturday. It was horrible and they could have easily avoided angry guests by sending them to the beach for a complimentary drink or something to compensate for the delay. The staff at the front desk seemed to be less than knowlegeable about the check in process, available rooms and also any local activities.

The check in process was a nightmare and hope that they fix the situation as it created a HUGE line of people and an easily avoidable negative experience.

Another unpleasant happening was the toilet system. We stayed in the B building which has been renovated and a random times we were unable to flush the toilet due to a "blockage" in the system. Yeah, ew. Then also they were getting ready for "high" travel season so most of the resort was undergoing pressure washing and clean up which sometimes made it a bit messy to walk through water dripping overhead, rock and debris, etc.

Overall the room was clean and the pools and other areas were clean. The location offers a great view of the sunset and conveniently located on Simpson Bay to allow you to hit some of the restaurants in the area or also a quick drive to Phillipsburg. Also one of our favorie places was the Sunset Beach Bar and that wasn't a far drive either.
