“Decent Indian - great pompedums!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

Ate here based on the reviews. My girlfriend is a vegetarian so Indian food is a staple for her. I had lamb korma and she had Chana masala. Although we both liked our meals we felt the sauce was thicker and pasty as compared to what we are used to in the states. It is on the water, where there are a bunch of boats docked so there is something to look at while you are there.

“Rock on with Lal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Lal's has been a St. Maarten institution for about 20 years.
Perhaps "institution" is too stuffy a word, because the atmosphere is definitely low-key and very casual.
Lal's serves up a wide variety of well-prepared Indian dishes at a very reasonable price. And all of his meat dishes are boneless; so, just dig in and enjoy.
Lal himself pours the drinks for you at the bar, and his friendly smile greets new-comers and regulars alike.
And if you enjoy old time rock 'n' roll, Lal's is the place for you. Lal is a classic rock aficionado. and, when his restaurant is closed during hurricane season, he spends his free time collecting favourites from the 1960s and 70s to add to his already extensive collection.
But don't fret; good conversation is foremost at the bar, and the music is never too loud to interfere with a friendly chat.
And keep your eyes peeled. You might spot some entertainment celebrities as they stop in for a drink ai Lal's on their way to nearby St Bart's.

“Damn right it's curry in a hurry!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

After a full day kayaking to and from Pinel Island, we wanted something quick and delicious and close to our hotel in Simpson Bay. Lal's was the perfect choice! We had the butter chicken (since comparing the staples is the best way to determine a good Indian restaurant!) and the lamb korma with garlic naan and they were both so flavourful with ample sauce that we practically licked the dishes clean. Service was friendly and quick, you don't get a great view since you're looking out at boats docked in the harbour (unless you're into that sort of thing). If you're staying in Simpson Bay and looking for something delicious and convenient, it's a perfect location, since you're also next to a grocery store (Gourmet Marche) and a gas station!

“Quality Food, Beer and Banter”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

I know a decent curry when I taste one and Lal's was mega good.
An excellent beer choice as well which was a bonus. No need to suck on a Presindente here!
Service was friendly and laid back.
Price was reasonable.
I wish we had time for a re-visit, would certainly go there again when back in SXM.

“Great flavor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

Really good food. Chicken curry was lighter than usual, maybe due to less or no coconut milk? Either way it was really tasty. Garlic naan was excellent too. Smaller portions than a U.S. restaurant, but still a great value. I'd definitely recommend getting an appetizer if you're very hungry.
