We just returned to cold, damp Philly yesterday and are planning our return to sunny St. Martin and Le Flamboyant next Spring Break with the family. Beach on the lagoon is perfect for little kids and all sorts of activities for the adults, even just sitting and drinking mudslides.
We opted for St. Martin rather than Sint Maarten because we wanted to be immersed in French culture. TV is all in French except for Euronews which kept us up on world events (probably moreso than at home). Le Flamboyant is perfect for couples (all ages), families with young children and family groups.
I would not recommend the all-inclusive plan because, except for breakfast buffet, because the food isn't particularly enticing - and forget a la carte - overpriced and undervalued. We tried that twice but there are many, many good restaurants in Marigot and environs. Several times we used our little kitchenette and there is a small grocery store (marche) down the road.
The staff was very cooperative and nice and I was emboldened to try out my high school French.
Recommendations: CNN or one or two US t.v. stations. DVD players available because most of the folks there didn't appear to be interested in a club scene (Princess Casino is nearby is that is your scene). Need wifi in every room because there is only one hot spot. Fluffier pillows. Could be four stars with a little more attention to detail.
Better to rent a car (can do that at the hotel) but driving can be quite daunting and one needs nerves of steel.
All in all, quite a memorable vacation.
