Free attraction...If you want to go, on the cheap, from the Cruise port to Ft. Louis on the French side, just a few blocks from the Margot Market, it can be easily done by public bus. Once there climb up to Ft. Louis, read the signs telling of the history of the historic fort, take fantastic pics of Margot below and the boats in the water. Then eat lunch at the Margot restaurants and visit the shops.
I was on the Navigator of the Seas.
I took the $6.00 all day round trip water taxi to town of Phillipsburg on the Dutch side, then I walked about 2 blocks to Back street.
The first street with the taxis is called Front street.
The next street behind is called Back Street, this is where the public buses run. They look like vans and say BUS on the license plates. Numberous vans will display Margot in the front window of the bus/van.Just ask any local how to get to back street and where to stand to get a bus to Margot.
Just waive and the bus will stop. It is $2.00 to Margot and $2.00 back from Margot to Phillipsburg.
The locals are friendly Just ask them to tell u the closest stop to Ft St Louis / Margot Market. Ask the bus driver also when u get on and verify that he is a bus not taxi and the fee is $2.00.
The driver let us off about 2 blocks from downtown Margot. We walked the two blocks. Then climbed up to the Fort to take pics, climbed down, looked at the boats at the dock, went to the spice market, shops, tent vendors and restaurants.
Just keep looking up, to find the fort. There are paved but unkept roads/walkways/stairs, all the way to the top of the fort.
There are some signs to guide you, but not many, so just keep looking up and watch for other tourists making their way back down.
We were four seniors, our men are "round"and we had no troble with the climb. Wear sneakers.
There is not too much left of the fort. No public bathrooms or drinking water, so make sure to bring your water and use another bathroom facility before climbing to the fort. No guides either, just signage.
The whole trip done on your own is $6.00 for water taxi round trip and $4.00 for bus driver round trip which means I spent $10.00 round trip from the cruise ship to Margot and return.
My husband and I are seniors and we felt safe and had a wonderful time. I was so excited to get such a bargain that I did tip the bus drivers coming and goings and they were very appreciative!
