If you visit St. Marten you MUST stay on the French side...while the dutch side offers a lot of good deals also the casino's, there is no place like the french side of St. Marten. I wanted to share this with everyone. The esmeralda hotel is located on the french side on Orient Bay Beach. This beach is the best for its white sand and blue waters..the water is usually calm. There are so many little tiki bars along the beach and u can eat or drink at anyone of them..the food is great no matter where you go. The beach chairs on the beach are for a fee, but it is worth it. Staying at the Esmeralda is the best...the rooms are beautiful, large and clean...you even have your own private pool - depending on the room u select. there hotel is like a boutique hotel and it is cozy and private. You can walk out of your room and have a short walk down the one of the most specatular beaches in St. Marten (Orient Bay). While, the dutch side is one that many visit, it does not have the beauty that you will find here. The dutch side has great deals for hotels, but it is too crowded for me. I do visit the dutch side while I am in St. Marten and venture to restaurants like Pineaple Petes and I go to the clubs by the airport for entertainment or by the casino's. If you decide to make Esmeralda your choice, you will not be disappointed. There is a small restaurant across from their property that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can even have them deliver to your room. The rooms also have kitchens and living areas too. It is worth the price. Go visit Pinel Island while you are there. You can take a ten minute boat ride over to the island and stay for lunch and head back whenever you want during the day. The little boat makes trips back and forth all day long. Bring cash to this island. They do take credit card, but when I was there, the restaurants only took cash. I have been going over to Pinel for the past ten years and last year I noticed they added a few more great restaurants....the others may take credit card. The restaurants are small huts on the small beach and they cook outside. It is amazing. They barbeque fish, chicken and you can even pick your lobster out of the cages in the water. Everyone is friendly and will even serve you drinks while on the beach chairs (for rent). This is also nice for snorkeling. You can bring your snorkel gear or rent too. I just love the frenchside of st. Marten and the Esmeralda is my favorite. I have been to the Atrium and to the Divi on the Dutch side, and they are both beautiful too, but I just love the french side and Orient Bay Beach. The Atrium and the Divi are time share hotels,,,great deal, clean and I enjoyed it there too, but found myself venturing over to the french side all week long. I also recommend Capitan Olivers for lunch over in Oyster Bay...that has great views with great food too. If you have lunch there you can also take a dip in the pool overlooking the ocean. I always rent a car while I am on this island. Learn the Island it is not that difficult and it is not that big. You can rent a car and travel from the dutch side to the french side with no problem. You may want to take a ferry over to Anguilla, St. Barths. Worth the day trip.
