Confirmed our reservation (time-share trade) a few days in advance just to make sure there would be no problems on arrival. Arrived at 11 pm on Sat. due to weather delay. We were told there was no room for us. I told her we had a reservation and that I had even confirmed it just a few days prior. I was told, very unapologetically, that they had my reservation, but that there was simply no room for us. We were sent to the nearby Westin Dawn Beach Hotel (very nice...see my review on that) and told OBBR would contact us when they were "ready" for us. Tues. we got a note from the front desk of the Westin telling us to call OBBR. I did and was told they tried to call us the day before (Mon.) but we never called back (never got a message from them). I was also told that the person I needed to speak to was not in yet, but could I wait by the phone for their call, they'd be in in the next couple hours. I said I wasn't about to sit by the phone and wait when the sun was shining outside. I waited 1/2 and called back and got the mgr. Explained the situation and was told she'd see if there was a room for us now (?!?!). I said, I thought there was, and that was why you were calling us!!! She'd said she would get back to me, and could I wait by the phone a little longer. I said no. She put me on hold and then told me the room was being cleaned but would be ready later that AM.

The room (efficiency) was OK, small, a little run down. It smelled heavily of Lysol disinfecting spray when we walked in (enough to make me start coughing). After that smell wore away, it smelled a little like poop. Anyways, the view of the marina was great. Construction (blocking our view of the ocean) started at 7 am every morning. A maid came and brought new towels and made the bed each day. The pool was great, they had happy hour at 4 pm (2 for 1 drinks).

To compensate us for our troubles (unpacking, packing, unpacking, waiting...etc.) the mgmt said they would not charge us our exchange fee, so it saved us about $130.

“Wonderful Vacation!”

Oyster Bay Beach Resort

Feb 21, 2008
7/8 found this review helpful

We stayed at the OBBR February 9th-17th 2008. We truly had a wonderful time.

We had a 1st floor oceanfront 2 bedroom suite that we shared with our friends. The suite consisted of a kitchen with a full size refridgerator, stove, microwave and plenty of cabinets containing cookware and such. There was a dining room table large enough to seat 6 people. The living room had a sofa, loveseat and cocktail table. Each of the bedrooms are off the common area, which gives you total privacy. Each bedroom had a king sized bed, tv, amoire and nightstands. We had the safe in our bedroom. Our bathroom had double sinks, a bidet as well as a toilet and a tub w/ shower. We had a very large balcony that can be accessed from the livingroom and each of the bedrooms. Each of the bedrooms and the livingroom had a seperate a/c unit. I liked the fact that we could regulate our own thermostat.

Housekeeping was very good. They were consistant and clean. We always had clean towels and plenty of them.

We ate at a few of the restaurants on or near the property.

Daniels/Mr. Busbys:
We were a party of 8 for dinner. All of our food came out at the same time. The food was excellent and the portions were plentiful.

Infinity:
We went there for Valentines Day dinner, $17.95pp. They had a special holiday buffet that was ok. Way too many red saucy dishes. I'm Italian and enjoy red sauce, but not on everything. Friends of ours ate there the week before and said that the buffet was completely different and delicious. We also had the breakfast buffet a couple of mornings for $12.95pp. Made to order omlets, juice, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, delicious french toast, potatoes and croissants.

Beau Beau's:
We were 15 people on a Friday night. They had chicken and rib night. I have to say, it was fabulous. It was a simple buffet, but it was great. They had BBQ ribs, chicken, peas and rice, potato salad, cole slaw, green salad w/dressing, rolls and possibly one other side dish that I may have forgotten. They had karaoke, which was fun to watch.

Big fish:
Our friends ate there one night and they said it was fantastic! Pricey, but fantastic.

There is a small store called "Mom and Pops" that is at the marina, just before the guard gate to enter the complex. Every morning at around 7:45 - 8:00 a man delivers the most delicious, fresh pastries and baguettes you could ever want. I made my morning trek almost everyday for it.

The pool and pool area was lovely. Part of the pool has an infinity edge over looking the water. Plenty of lounge chairs around. Each room is given towel cards to exchange for pool towels.

The beach at the resort was great. Plenty of loungers and umbrellas around. Soft white sand.

This was my first trip to St Maarten. I loved the island! Front Street in Philipsburg had fabulous shopping. Booze is so inexpensive. We enjoyed a couple of afternoons at Pirates in Paradise for lunch and cocktails. We had breakfast at the Harborview restaurant. Very good and inexpensive.

We had a great afternoon in Marigot . It's such a beautiful town. Lots of shops and restaurants.

We went to Orient Beach, it was really nice. After the beach, on the way back to OBBR, we headed to Paradise View. The place really dosen't look like much when you walk up to it. The views from the outside deck are amazing. You can see forever! We had a great afternoon of cocktails and food. Claudette and her husband are wonderful hosts. That woman can cook! Just so you know, she closes a 4:00pm.

We had fabuolus pizza at Mama Pizza on the French side. You must try it. They had outside dining with waitress service. They had at least 25-30 different types of pizza.

We truly had a wonderful time!

“We Had a Nice Stay at the OBBR”

Oyster Bay Beach Resort

Feb 11, 2008
6/7 found this review helpful

We stayed at Oyster Bay Beach Resort (OBBR) from Jan. 26 through Feb. 1.

Our room was in the hotel part of the resort (the second floor above the lobby), and was not a time share. The ocean view room overlooked the pool and the new construction. However, when the door to the balcony was shut, we could not hear any construction noise. We had a small room with a king-sized bed, a nice-sized closet with a safe, and a small refrigerator and microwave.

The pool is beautiful and over looks the ocean. We spent most of our days at the resort beach – Dawn Beach. The resort has many lounge chairs and umbrellas at the beach. We never had a problem getting chairs. There are towel stations at both the pool and the beach. The beach was about ½ mile long. You could walk until you hit steep rocks that separated the Westin from OBBR. The women selling bags, necklaces, etc. on the beach were annoying at times, but if you politely told them you weren’t interested they usually didn’t bother you.

The lobby and bar area has free Wi-Fi, which worked well except for a 1 ½ day period that it was out. We used our laptop and Yahoo Voice to call home, which was much less expensive then calling from the hotel phone in our room.

Through the resort activities desk we arranged a half day three island snorkeling trip with Captain Alan, which was a lot of fun. The mud bath on Tintamarre Island is a must-do! Captain Alan is very knowledgeable and friendly; he snorkels with you and guides you through the three different snorkeling stops.

We also did the around the island full day sail with Golden Eagle tours. The all day catamaran trip was a lot of fun and included several stops to snorkel and swim, open bar and snacks on board and a lunch at a Grand Case restaurant.

While at OBBR we did not rent a car. There are a few restaurants either on the property or in safe walking distance. We ate one night at Beau Beau’s and thought it was just so-so. The meal wasn’t bad just nothing memorable.

Another night we ate at Daniel’s By the Sea (it is Mr. Busbys during the day). The food was Italian and was OK. We ate several times at Big Fish and it was amazing; the food was fresh and delicious. Next to Big Fish is a small grocery store “Mom & Pops” that has fresh baguettes and croissants every morning.

Beau Beau’s is on OBBR property. Daniels/Mr. Busbys, Big Fish and Mom & Pops are just outside the gates of OBBR but before you get to the main road. Big Fish and Mom & Pops are on a boat dock.

The nearby Oyster Pond Marina is in close proximity by car, but not safe to walk at night. At the marina there are a handful of restaurants. We heard that Mama’s Pizzeria was fantastic and some people also loved Captain Oliver’s, the Dinghy Bar and Le Planteur. The resort’s activities desk can arrange for Captain Oliver’s to send a car to pick you up and drive you back. However, on a busy Saturday night we were stood up and when the front desk called Captain Oliver’s to see where our ride was, the restaurant said they were too busy to get us (even though the ride was pre-arranged).

The OBBR has a hop on / hop off bus ($10 per person per day or $25 per person for the week) that goes to Phillipsburg, Orient Beach, Marigot, Grand Case, Maho and to as grocery store.

The OBBR staff was friendly and helpful. The property was very nice and clean on a beautiful beach. However, it was a bit off the beaten path and didn’t have too much to do besides the beach and pool.

“Second Stay Better Than the First”

Oyster Bay Beach Resort

Feb 6, 2008

This was my husband and my second time to St. Maarten and to the Oyster Bay Beach Resort. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed both the pool and Dawn Beach. The property is still beautifully maintained and even while there was construction going on, it didn't interfere with our time. We rented a car again and toured the island, visiting our favorite spots and learning about some new places to go. We LOVE the french side for food and highly recommend Spiga in Grand Case. As far as the food options around the resort, we enjoyed Big Fish Grill very much. There is a small store right next door to Big Fish that is extremely well stocked. The restaurant at OBBR is not that good to be honest and the only complaint we have about the whole resort (the reason for above average, instead of excellent, rating). I recommend this resort for couples and family with younger children who are looking for quiet during the day at the resort. We have teenagers and wouldn't take them here because there are not enough activities to keep them amused at that age.

We loved the Oyster Bay Resort for many reasons. First the service was great. Marian at the front desk was great and always available to answer any questions about the Island. The cleaning staff was top notch and we couldn't muster a single complaint. The infinity Pool was magnificant, the beach charming and the activity and food at Beau Beau's kept he party going. We wil be back this september.
