“Great place to chill”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We have been to St. Martin many times and have always stayed on the French side of the island. However, this time we were getting on the Windsurf cruise and the port is in Philipsburg so we opted to stay here. We arrived early from our flight at around 1pm and were very pleasantly surprised to not only have our room ready but to get a upgrade to a suite. The room was very spacious, clean and had a great view of the bay with a balcony. We opted to go to the beach in front of the hotel which was pleasant (though does not compare with Orient Beach). They do not have beach service on weekdays, but the bartender was more than happy to help. The lounge is the best area day or night. They have multiple lounge chairs, umbrellas, chill music and views of the beach and water. Lovely spot! We discovered that we accidently left some clothes in the room once we were on our cruise. We called the hotel and they were very nice, found the clothing and set it aside for us to get upon our return. We did so and as our flight was several hours later we just opted to hang out in there lounge area prior to our flight as it was such a great vibe. If you are taking a cruise or want to be in Philipsburg where you can walk to everything downtown, this is the place to stay!

Room Tip: A balcony room overlooking the bay is optimal and worth it.

This property is very conveniently located smack in the middle of downtown Phillipsburg. We had 2 couples in 2 rooms for this stay. We were booked for city view rooms which we had, and our travel companions lucked out and got a top floor ocean view room. The rooms were spacious and well appointed. We did appetizers at their nice ocean and board walk sitting area which was tasty, and reasonable. Not so their breakfast buffet, which was quite a disapointment with long waits for food bins to be refilled, and slow beverage service. And this was $17.50 per person as I recall. Avoid this for sure! It is a nice walk up and down the boardalk from the hotel, as well as all the shops downtown. (and restaurants)

Stayed here prior to WindStar cruise. Very nice hotel, friendly staff, great location. Wonderful bed & pillows. I would stay here again. The lobby bar was a fun place to gather, have a drink and enjoy the view.

My wife and I had a great experience at the Holland House in early January. Our room was clean with simplistic decor. We had a beach view room on the 2nd floor; we definitely recommend a beach view if your budget allows. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful, from the front desk, to housekeeping, the bar staff and lounge/restaurant staff. The Holland House has there own beach chairs on a section of Great Bay beach as you walk out of the hotel from the lounge area. The hotel does have "beach staff", or people who will take food/drink orders from the beach; however, we seemed to rarely see them. If we had a complaint about the hotel, this would be it. I will say though, we didn't often have a need for them so we weren't put-off by it; more of an observation. There is no swimming pool or fitness center at the hotel, but you don't go to St. Maarten to hang by the pool anyway; too many great beaches. We found the openness of the lobby/bar area/lounge/restaurant to be great. The sea breeze that flows through the whole area was quite relaxing. The hotel is sandwiched between Front Street in Philipsburg and the boardwalk along the beach. We found this beach to be very underrated; we visited many other beaches during our trip, including Orient and Friar's Bay on the French side, Maho, Mullet, Dawn, and Kim Sha on the Dutch side. We never heard people talk about Great Bay beach, but make no mistake it was a pretty good beach with nice, calm Caribbean waters. Our hotel stay included full breakfast at the restaurant, which included a nice buffet style spread. The food was fresh and their were good options; my only suggestion to the hotel would be to add some new items once in awhile as it was the same everyday of our stay. The hotel is located in Philipsburg at about the mid-point of the boardwalk. Philipsburg, particularly Front Street, is bustling when the cruise ships are in port; however, is all but dead in the evening. There are a few restaurants/bars open along the boardwalk in the evenings, making for a nice relaxing night out if you need it. If you want to party, just take a taxi over to Simpson Bay for $18 like we did. We actually liked staying in the more quiet area that we did with the ability of to head to other areas for a rowdier night. Overall, we liked our stay at the Holland House and without a doubt would recommend it to others choosing to stay in the Philipsburg area.

Room Tip: Recommend a beach view room if you can. Avoid walking around in Philipsburg at night; can be a littl...

This is a very pleasant hotel with a good location. It is in the middle of the beach promenade of this town. You have immediate access to the beach and all the promenade attractions. Right behind the promenade is the main shopping street which is quaint and atmospheric and offers lots of shopping at duty free bargain prices. The cruise ships dock in the bay in front of the hotel so when their passengers come into town things get very crowded. That might be a good time to explore the rest of this island. Rental cars are quite cheap (we paid $120 for a small car for a week). There are many beaches and good restaurants all over the island so having your own transport is a good idea. The hotel has a nice open and breezy lobby, bar, and dining area. The food is quite good but for fine dining there are better places elsewhere. The rooms are a bit dated but if you can get a sea view room those are definitely worth it.

We were stuck on St Maarten for 4 nights while waiting to travel to another nearby island. Holland House Beach Hotel was a good stay with beautiful rooms and a great ocean view. I recommend this hotel and would return if ever in St Maarten again. Staff not the friendliest but neither are the locals.

Room Tip: Ocean view

We've stayed at the Holland House 3 times now and intend to go back in December. The lobby is welcoming and open, the rooms have just been redone and are wonderful, the food is great - and the staff took very good care of us. From the lobby you walk out the patio, across the boardwalk and you're on the beach. You can order food as well as drinks from the comfort of your beach lounge, request an extra towel, and have a shower before going back to your room. December here we come!

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view - you won't be disappointed.
