When it comes to feeling at home .. away from home ... I can't imagine any place creating that feeling for me more so than the Sea Palace and their trusted staff. I have been stayin with the Sea Palace for over 20 years. Originally I was a bit disappointed but that was short-lived ... the "glamerous, amenity-full, deluxe" accomodations that I may be used to in other vacation destinations was replaced with bright smiles, warm welcomes and tears of happiness each time I checked in. I wouldn't trade that for "perfect accomodations" anywhere.

The view (you must stay on the beach side) is incomparable - the sparkle of the brilliant turquoise water that blends right into the sky ... water so clear you can see your toes 6 feet under ... colorful umbrellas dotting the long beach line down to the pier in the center of town ... leafy green mountains accented with brightly painted island homes ... it just doesn't stop.

All you need to bring with you to the Sea Palace is a few pieces of comfortable clothing, a relaxed attitude (things are a little bit slower on the islands, mon) and plenty of sunscreen!

Great location in Philipsburg, Unit on beach side, great view. Staff not very helpful on locations of grocery stores etc. They want you to eat in their restaurant. Reported problem with ceiling leaking in bathroom must have been unit above with a bathroom leak. They came in and put caulk on the crack. Next day leak was back, they had not fixed the upstairs problem. Hot tub on the roof, but no water. Poor equipted kitchen, eating out for a week gets very expensive. No grill, no coolers for day trips to other beaches on island. No parking availble.

The Dutch side of St. Maarten in general and the Sea Palace just keep getting better. We have been going there since 1998 and have witnessed many improvements in that timeframe, the Front Street re-development and the beach and boardwalk in particular.

If you're looking for a 5 star resort the Sea Palace is not for you. It is a downtown hotel with a beachfront. It is well run and well maintained. You can spend an enjoyable week here without renting a car. The beach is clean and close. The views are breathtaking. There are many excellent restaurants within walking distance. Antoine's, the Greenhouse and Chesterfield's are favourites. Fusion's has just opened next door, but we didn't try it.

Try for a unit ending in a 1, 2 or 3 as they have full frontal views of Great Bay and larger balconies. Units ending in a 4 look to the west and 5 & 6 are streetviews.

The staff is very helpful. Erica is there on Saturdays and Mondays to assist with activities and orientation. Kevin on the night shift is a real gentleman. Joe, Mayra and the rest of the staff work hard to make your stay enjoyable.

If you can book a day sailing with Ian Martin, you'll enjoy yourself. You have to get a group together and take the boat for the whole day, though. It's about $100 a person from 9:00am until 6:00pm. Drinks and a wonderful lunch of ribs and chicken are included. If you know what you're doing, Ian will let you take the helm, too.

My boyfriend and I just returned from a one week vacation to beautiful St. Martin. We stayed at the Sea Palace in Phillipsburg through our time share. Overall, we felt the Sea Palace was an average hotel. Our unit was on the third floor and overlooked the street. As such, there were several mornings when we awoke to the sound of cars honking and roosters crowing. Our studio room was clean but slightly run down. The hotel had no activities, only an orientation two days after our arrival. BUT, we reminded ourselves that the lack of hotel activities probably was to our advantage as it motivated us to explore the island.

We began with the beach behind the hotel. It wasn't one of the better beaches, but it did serve its purpose - sunshine and relaxation! From it, we watched the numerous cruise ships that arrived and departed each day. Afterwards, the nearby area afforded us many opportunities for shopping, dining and strolling on the boardwalk. One of our favorite restaurants, Fusion, was next to our hotel and served amazing island fare and excellent drinks. I strongly suggest it to anyone in Phillipsburg. During the evenings, there was little to do in Phillipsburg except eat more (possibly because we were there in early December, still considered "low season"). A favorite spot for dinner was Taloula Mangos where the chicken wings and pizza were to die for. Drinks were excellent there as well. People recommended the Greenhouse, a restaurant down the street, but we were not impressed with our one meal there.

Our experiences beyond Phillipsburg included an awesome 3 hour island tour with Happy Harrold, a St Martin native (strongly recommended); Simpson Beach where the bar serves a suprisingly good swordfish sandwich to be enjoyed while watching the planes take off and land; Oyster Bay, a beautiful beach away from the hustle and bustle; and Marigot, a fun town for shopping on the French side.

Overall, it was a great first trip to St. Martin and I look forward to returning very soon. Advice for visitors is to slather yourself in mosquito repellant every night and to avoid the time share tours offered on every street corner - although they offer the equivalent of $50, the sessions usually last much longer then one hour and can really eat into your vacation time.

We stayed at the Sea Palace during Thanksgiving week, and were disappointed and would recommend anyone to avoid staying in Philipsburg altogether let alone the Sea Palace. The town of Philipsburg caters to cruise ship passengers and pretty much shuts down at 5pm. No nightlife, no restaurants, pretty much nothing to do. The beach is ok during the day; however we toured the island extensively and found much more appealing areas for a beach holiday. The hotel itself is very rundown. I have stayed in hotels throughout the Caribbean; some of them budget and this was by far the worst. the water went out one night while i was taking a shower, there were very bad sewage smells from one of our bathrooms, the drapes fell down, someone spilled coffee in a common area and it wasnt cleaned for 4 days. also our oven didnt work, so the staff opened the adjoining unit to use that oven, it also didnt work. friends of ours living in st maarten warned us that the area left of the hotel is dangerous. be careful. all in all this hotel has seen its day. dont trade your timeshare for this place as you can find cheap accomodations that are much nicer and beach holiday like elsewhere on the island. we checked into one for the last two days and it was much better.
