We stayed in two studio units at the Flamingo Beach Resort from 2/28/2008 through 3/2/2008. This is our third vacation at the Flamingo and the first in studio units, with which we were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere at the resort is relaxing with a friendly staff and enough not to do for a laid back week without venturing too far.
Each unit contains its own kitchen, two televisions and a DVD player. The sleeping area is divided from the patio/eating area with sliding bamboo privacy dividers.
The kitchens have large refrigerators, ice makers, microwaves, dishwashers, are well stocked with utensils and contain cookware and dishes, but we brought the following items:
Nonstick frying pan
Your own brand of coffee - coffee maker provided.
Seasonings
Laundry bag
Snorkel gear
iPod speakers
Tennis racquets
Bathroom spray
Food, pop and liquor can be bought from the well stocked Peli-Deli (7:30 AM - 7:30PM; Credit cards accepted for purchases over $20) just across the street. St. Maarten is duty free, so liquor and cigarettes are inexpensive.
The resort provides two excellent and well protected beaches and a negative-edge freshwater pool. There is a snack bar on the main beach and a smaller bar near the pool that opens in the evenings. The main beach snack bar was consistently out of popular menu items. There is a nice, unassuming snack bar down the beach at the Pelican Resort with a good selection and great service. There is a small store (9:00AM - 5:00PM) near the main beach that sells $1.00 beers and souvenirs.
Snorkeling is average and safe and there are some interesting things to see near the break walls. The tennis court is in remarkably good shape and is well lit at night. Ensure reservations are made at the front desk.
There is no wi-fi access, but reasonable internet access is available in the lobby on two workstations for $40 unlimited for the week.
A pizza shop/bakery recently opened across the street and the Hollywood Casino nearby is worth a visit. Each time we've visited, we've had some pretty good luck. Clothing ranges from beach to dressy. Marcos restaurant, above the Red Piano, served good bar food. It's worth a visit to meet Marco, who runs around like a mad man doing a good portion of the work.
Although Billy Folly Rd. is busy and there are not always sidewalks, it is safe to walk down to the main road if you remain alert. Also, you can walk a good distance along the beach and to the main road, almost to the airport. Traffic in St. Maarten seems to have tripled over the last few years. While we rented a car, from Budget, passive drivers should use taxis to get around. Unlike other areas of St. Maarten, there was always sufficient parking at the hotel.
We did a lot of other things during our stay which I will record in another review, but we've always enjoyed the Flamingo. It is a very clean and well maintained hotel with nice landscaping -- the flowers always seem to be in bloom. They have recently completed a major refurbishing project and it shows. We met some great people from Britain and Europeans seem to be favoring the island, given the strength of the Euro.
The hiccups:
One of the TVs did not work and another could not tune in to the DVD player.
Toilets near the beach were not always working.
An alarm clock in one of the rooms mysteriously went off at random hours.
A lamp was broken after the room was cleaned, which is done only once per week.
Ice maker did not work in one of the rooms.
Supplied coffee is bitter.
Recommendations:
Guest laundry is $2.00 per wash and $2.00 per dry, quarters only. There is a one dollar bill changer in the laundry room.
All transactions, including at the casino, can be made in US Dollars. Bring a lot of cash as ATMs do not dispense US currency and credit cards are not accepted as widely as in other countries. Prices in stores are often quoted in Guilder ($1.80), so items are almost half as marked.
If you're arriving significantly prior to check in at 3:00PM, bring beach clothes so you don't miss any surf time.
Do express check out the night before your actual check out. The check in/out process is somewhat inefficient and you'll be standing with the crowd wasting beach time on the day you leave.
If you're leaving late in the day, check out is at 10:00AM, you can request a hospitality suite to use for a half hour to shower and change for your trip home.
