Sonesta Great Bay Beach Hotel and Resort is an older location that could use some upgrading. To my understanding it is recently under new management hopefully renovations and improvements are on the way. The staff has high hopes for the newcomers and speaks highly of them. Sophia, the night manager, I hope I have that correct, was very pleasant and accommodating. I noticed her taking notes and listening to the guests concerns.
The rooms were average, clean, spacious, the beds were comfortable basically your typical hotel room. The view was spectacular. From my balcony I could see the Bay, and all of the activities on the deck and pool area. The bar and fridge in my room was stocked and restocked from day one. The temperature was very comfortable.
I never had an issue with the towels neither in my room nor at the pool. They were clean and without stains. Housekeeping was a little slow, I don’t think they got to our floor until around 300PM or later daily. The only drawback to my room was the rusted shower casing that had separated from the wall, and the bathroom needed to be treated for mold and mildew. You must be mindful of such in hot, moist climates.
There were adequate daytime and early evening activities: bingo, water aerobics, crab racing, name that tune, Latin dance, etc. something for various tastes. Thanks Kevin, Denroy, and “F” from Maho, you guys really put forth effort to keep your guests happy and engaged, I can tell that you enjoy what you do. There was limited nightlife and children’s activities however. I did enjoy the Steel Band, movie nights, karaoke, Chocolate Factory Band, and dance performances, however these were usually the only activities for that particular night. I would like to see more of a variety of things offered, and when I return I would like to see one of those unused restaurants transformed into a night club. It would give your adult guests more evening activities as well as bring in outside revenue (just a thought).
Although the breakfast menu offered a little variety, it did get tedious after the third day. Otherwise, the food was great, there is nothing like authentic Jerk and Curry dishes. We did experience some mishaps (crab cakes, and breakfast potatoes), and the food wasn’t really hot, but with change there is sometimes discomfort, they will get it right in the end. Perhaps you should consider keeping the poolside snack bar open later to offer evening snacks and popcorn for movie nights.
For the most part the wait and cooking staff was pleasant, attentive, and willing to go the extra mile to please the guest. With the exception of the pizza guy, his demeanor sucked, really had a nonchalant attitude towards the guests, answered me very rudely, but then again to my understanding he’s the owner’s brother so he gets a pass on his behavior (unfortunate).
I didn’t enjoy the casino; it was hot as the entire lobby floor, and really didn’t pay out much. I heard that they were in the midst of replacing the air conditioning unit, so better luck next time. They should consider offering more than slot machines, for those who take gaming serious.
There were several activities offered at a cost. I think the young lady working the desk should attempt to get to work on time and wear more appropriate (business like) clothing, perhaps a uniform.
The drinks were good if you like house brands, would like to see some top shelf brands offered. The bartender Nigel is the greatest, wonderful personality, attentive to the guests, efficient, truly an asset to your organization.
The front desk employees really weren’t of much assistance didn’t seem to know the answers to much, but they smiled. Edrick the bell man was very personable, really liked and appreciated the offering of cold towels.
We are planning to return and hopefully then there will be more transportation available to the Maho
