Stopped in St. Maarten/Martin on a cruise in January and wanted to get away from the crowds a bit. I had read that this beach was fabulous, so we scheduled a rendezvous with family members that we were travelling with. They had a 19-month old, (and when I say 19 months old, I mean, very mature for her age, practically swimming laps in a pool already!!) but once we all met up at the beach and started swimming, we realized that it may not have been the best choice for the little one...the undertow was very strong that day, and we had to be extra careful taking her out with us in the water. Regardless, we had a very pleasant afternoon.
Yes, the sand is hot. I expect that at Caribbean beaches. Facilities were few, but again, we were prepared for that.
FYI- it is a bit of a ways from the cruise ship dock. Hire a cab or source out some other transportation if this is your beach of choice. We opted for the bus, (the white vans) which was cheap and efficient. Someone had mentioned the lack of parking- so true!
