There's a beach here? I love the smell of Jet A in the morning! The aircraft and SXM are the main attraction.
Watch for the landing lights on the horizon and then a dot appears. Within 90 seconds a larger than life aircraft appears in front of you eyes - some appearing that they may bounce on the beach. As fast as the airplane appears, it is over your head and touching down. Then watch for the Twin Otters, Skyvans and other small turboprops pull a short final. All are equally enjoyable.
The big boys rule on departure - 747s, A340s and other heavies. The smaller mainline aircraft are fun as well. If you are kind to the Insel Air MD-80 pilots, as they wave to the beach goers with windows open, they may hold the brakes in position as the turbines spool up and give the fence riders quite a ride.
If you are looking for the quiet beach, there are so many others to go to on the island. If you are worried about jet blast, stand to the sides - just look at the metal barrier near the fence that says "Danger Jet Blast" and don't stand there. The sides are just fine.
Enjoy the airplanes and the marvel that they are!
