“WOW, STAY AWAY!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

Omg, this thing is completely insane! Not only should visits to Maho Bay Beach be discouraged, they should be absolutely prohibited! On a recommendation, my gf and I stopped here to see the planes come in overhead. Pretty cool stuff, until a big jet landed and then taxied up the runway and turned its exhaust on us. Suddenly we were being painfully sandblasted with debris that imbedded itself in our skin deep enough to cause bleeding! Thank God we happened to be sitting with our back to it and not standing or we would have been blown over and swept into the sea! Also thank God the exhaust did not pick up any sharp pieces of metal or broken glass or we could have lost eyes, body parts...listen up people, I am NOT EXAGGERATING HERE!

We were totally shocked and unprepared for the violence of this event. What if we had a small child or infant with us?? There are huge signs all over the place warning of the possibility for severe injury or death, but we pooh-poohed them because this was a RECOMMENDED activity (by our hotel concierge) and there were so many other people casually and nonchalantly lounging on the beach. Most of them scrambled to leave after that, I can tell you!

So...SERIOUSLY...DO NOT DO THIS! Truly, I am SHOCKED that S.M. does not close this beach permanently. It's really crazy!

“Loved this beach experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

We spent our morning in St. Martin/St.Maarten on a jeep and aqua-boat excursion, and afterwards, our tour guide dropped us off here for about 2 hours where we ate delicious burgers and watched plane after plane come in for landing. It was awesome, I LoVeD it. You just don't see this type of setting very often. The bar and grill was very busy, but the atmosphere was great with tunes playing and the planes offering great entertainment in the background. After our lunch, we hit the beach. It is small and busy. We dropped our stuff on the sand and got in the water. It was perfect temperature and no waves, fun to bob around while we watched the planes come in overhead and listen to the nearby music from the bar and grill. Our hubbies had to hold onto the chain-link fence when the planes were taking off, and said it was cool to try. If you are on the beach lined up directly behind the jet blast when planes are taking off, everything in its path would role down the beach (including a person we saw somersaulting to the water) and hats, towels, etc. But you can enjoy the beach and experience without being jet-blasted.

I would love to go back. This is a must-do while on the island!

“Small beach with huge undertow from planes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

Worth the visit. Planes land every 15mins or so in afternoon. Small beach (compared to Orient), very packed and no facilities. Huge undertow caused by inbound planes. But the experience and view is amazing. Planes coming in right over your head. Runway just across the street from beach. Get underwater for takeoffs or the blowing sand will sting you!!

This was the coolest beach ever! The airplanes landing are the craziest things ever! I can't wait to come back to this beach!! Be careful of the planes taking off it can blow some serious sand!
