“Fun experience at Maho”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

As a beach, Maho isn't ideal--it has large waves that crash at a rough angle and have a strong undertow.

What is great about Maho, though, is watching the planes land. This is one of the only places in the world (the only?) where an airport runway is located 20 feet away from a beach. Consequently, during the day, if you go to this beach, you can watch planes (everything from the small commuter planes from St. Barth's to huge B747s from Europe) landing and taking off. It's quite a surreal experience and makes for awesome photos.

Free parking is available at the casino next door, if you don't manage to snag a spot on the street. There are two beach bars w/ chaises and umbrellas, but it's not really worth it. Just toss your stuff on the ground, swim a bit, take some photos of planes, and hit the road.

The KLM double decker from Holland lands around noon every day, and most planes from the US will land between 12 and 2. After 2-3 pm, planes start to leave and this is an unpleasant feeling. Especially when the big ones go, there is a lot of jet blast that whirls the sand up into your face. Takeaway message: see them land (which is more interesting anyways)! Great place for kids.

“Small beach”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

Beach is small and right next to the airport, so very noisy. The undertow was quite rough getting into the water, but the water was pleasant once in.

“Kinda free excursion in St. Martin...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

While in St Martin, I think I would have to recomend checking out this beach for the airplane fun! I say its kinda free, in that there's no charge for the beach, or the fun you will have as the planes go over your head... However, it's a short taxi ($8 pp if shared ride) from the cruise ports, and there is a resturant/bar right there on the beach. We spent most of our time watching the plane over head and depart, look out for the big gust if your lucky enought to get behind that KLM plane. It's really quiet the experience! The water is pretty, and can be rough so be careful, I'd say keep the kids out and non swimers away from the water.

“Great for watching the planes”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

This is great place to watch the big jets land and feel the wind from the jets. Its not a big beach and there isn't that much space to sit and sun tan but its great for swimming.

“never again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

this beach is so tiny and crowded that i would have hated it even if the water were perfect. it is not. this was the ROUGHEST beach i have ever been too. the waves are huge and the shore is so eroded that there is an enormous drop off as you step into the water, and if you make it further into the water there is another DEEP drop off. if it weren't for the planes no one would venture there. IMHO you should go next door to mullet bay and take the 10 minute walk to maho at the end of your day. except for the food and fabulous folks at guy's driftwood bar and grill, this beach is only worth about an hour of your time and with the expense of a long taxi ride, i'd think long and hard about making this the one beach you visit in st. maarten.
