I totally agree with other reviewers when they say that St. Maarten (Dutch side) does not care about their historic past. I had exactly the same feeling when I visited Fort Amsterdam. By coincidence I visited Fort Lois on the French side the day before and I could not believe the difference.
Fort Amsterdam is not inviting to visit: No signs on how to get there, there are only Hotels and resorts there, you have to walk through a resort to get there and you'll find garbage in the area.
I must admit that now they've placed boards with historic information so that's a progress but they still have a long way to go.

“Fort Amsterdam is Dump, littered with trash”

Its pretty obvious that St. Maarten (dutch side) thinks very little of their historic past. To even get to Fort Amsterdam you need to walk through a resort to reach it.

The actual fort is very poorly maintained. There is trash and beer bottles every where. There is no historical information anywhere either. The cannons were extremely rusted and everything else where was in dissarray.

Compare this fort to the French Fort and its a world of difference, over on the french side their Fort Louis is well maintained and it is obvious they take some pride in it and their history.

Fort Amsterdam is a shame, to let a peice of history go to waste like that is very sad.
