Just returned from a week at La Terrasse on the island of St. Maarten. After carefully reading the reviews posted on Tripadvisor, I was definitely disappointed with this hotel. The front desk staff at both La Terrasse AND La Plage were not friendly or helpful in any way. We ended up going to the Sonesta to ask for dining recommendations and directions. The Sonesta Maho is right next door and seemed to provide much better assistance to its guests.
La Terrasse was a "down to the basics" hotel. I would compare it to an out of date Holiday Inn. It was relatively clean with no frills, no thrills and sparse decor. We stayed in a 1 bedroom and the suite had adequate space for 2 - with a nice living area and deck. The beach is much smaller than other beaches on St. Maarten and has a steep drop off. The location is in close proximity to restaurants, grocery store, some night life and some shops. We highly recommend you try the "Bajatzu" restaurant next to the Sonesta - we had a nice dinner there. Although lots of people enjoyed the view of the planes - you MUST remember that this view comes with wafting fumes of jet fuel as the planes idle before taking off and a great deal of noise! If you want a beach or area that is relaxing, tranquil and with fresh caribbean air - I would NOT recommend the Royal Islander properties in Maho.
We enjoyed the island as a whole and particularly the french side. A rental car is a MUST for this island! We enjoyed trying out other beaches and finding great french restaurants in Marigot (Le Tropicana was our favorite! - but pricey). We liked L'Auberge Gormande in Grand Case and really liked the Ocean Lounge (in the Holland House Hotel) on the boardwalk in Philipsburg.
